Counterpoint to everyone else: This shows spending time at a big company can help developers hone their skills and learn important dos (and more likely donts) of game creation. Then when they break out on their own they have the training to make something amazing.

What this tells me is that Ubisoft is very good at recruiting, and then terrible at using the talent they have at hand which… makes perfect sense given the history of the publisher and the games they put out.
I don’t think people would be as annoyed at Ubisoft if they had never delivered interesting games. It’s more that they constantly under-deliver on games that have immense potential.

I love Stray! Such a rich tapestry and storyline. The cat and B12’s relationship really tugged at my heartstrings, the finale was amazing.
I have all the achievements except the fast run, because there’s so much to see I can’t help but slow down here and there.
Oh wait, my cat also hasn’t scratched everywhere it can scratch.

Also r/pioneersofpagonia is from an ex ubisoft dev, the settlers inventor himself Volker Wertich. He worked on the latest settlers game. It should have been a modern settlers game, but sadly Ubisoft wanted to make a RTS Game (again..) out of the settlers Franchise. Volker then left Ubisoft and did make his own version of a new modern settlers game.

It’s kind of ironic that Ubisoft has such a great number of hidden talents in their ranks but management makes sure they keep making the most boring by the numbers games. That is until said hidden talents get tired of getting bossed around and quit to work somewhere else and make games that actually remain relevant longer than their release month

A junior programmer at Ubisoft can go to another junior or mid level position at one of these games, but it’s not like they have any connection to any of the decision making.

Corporations of major size to the point of becoming quite inhuman hate risk so they only go with the boring safe option, where as indpendent smaller and more flexible developers in turn are free to take risks and do more interesting stuff that would be too risky for for major developers.
There are indeed many excellent indie games, but there are also several more failed smaller projects that never really took off truly. I mean the train horror game was in terms of game quality not the best game by a long shot, but its idea and premise of fighting a sentient train was enough to make people love it, and that is the kind of games big corporate studies don’t want to make necessarily, because they seem risky.

Stray is so underrated. I know it’s generally well received but I feel like people were disappointed because they expected to be absolutely blown away by cat-physics or something, and it just kinda turns out that playing a cat is like playing any other video game character.
The world and vibe is the absolute soul of this game, and at its heart is the relatively unrestricted freedom you have to explore it in the same way a cat might if such a world were real. I have an entire folder of all the screenshots you can take when you find a cat bed and the camera pans out to produce a really wonderful shot.
