  1. Don’t forget Sifu, Outlast…When developers leave behind the corporate structure, they often rediscover what made them love games in the first place

Amazing what one can do when they are truly free to create.

When it comes to gaming companies, the issue has always been with the executives and not with the developers themselves. Many devs are gamers too and want to put out good products, but they always get the short end of the stick.

  3. Interesting_Pass3392

Only 3 devs of clair obscur were ex Ubisoft

  4. Saiken27

This just goes to show you that the devs have amazing potential, it is Ubishit that limits them and forces them to make garbage.

  5. fieryfox654

I loved Stray but unlike most people I did not enjoy Expedition 33

  6. nkfish11

Neither game was made by a single person. This shit is so stupid lol.

  7. Popal24

Do you know if Big Helmet Heroes has been made by ex-Ubisoft employees as well ?

  8. horticulturistSquash

its funny because those two studios are in the same city

    Montpellier, France

  9. Affectionate-Tip-164

So you’re saying Ubisoft is great at producing great indie games.

  10. broken_sys

if the want to fix ubisoft Guillemot family need to go.

  11. First-Junket124

I mean yeah you can see with many Ubisoft games they have many interesting ideas that are left half assed due to deadlines but when they breakaway from those unrealistic deadlines we get these kinda games from Ubisoft developers

  12. bamronn

ubisoft has some of the most talented artists, it’s a fact. they are just chained up

  13. The_Friendly_Slendy

“Okay, so these are the new DLC ‘cat collars’ and the latter 1/3 of the game was cut into 2 expansions, gamers are all regressive troglodytes so they’ll never notice how greedy we are.”

-alternate universe where stray was made by Ubisoft.

  14. Shigana

So how many ex Ubisoft employees worked on each game exactly?

Unless it’s an entire team, this post is literally meaningless.

  15. BlackMagic0

It’s amazing what can be achieved when not being held back by greedy and impatient shareholders/bosses.

  16. alancousteau

Ubisoft used to make the most innovative and unique games before. But then corporate greed took over and the only goal was to please the shareholders and syphon as much money out of gamers as possible

  17. Affectionate-Ad4419

Let’s not forget the underrated Ancestors, directed by the ex-PoP director and lead/creator of Assassin’s Creed 😀

  18. RedofPaw

Damn, that one employee sure has been busy.

  19. knightwatch98

Counterpoint to everyone else: This shows spending time at a big company can help developers hone their skills and learn important dos (and more likely donts) of game creation. Then when they break out on their own they have the training to make something amazing.

  20. Thiel619

Let’s not pretend Stray is a forgotten masterpiece or a hidden gem. It was a literal walking sim with auto platforming.

  21. ta394283509

for me, stray for PC had a game breaking bug that meant I could only play the first half of the game. the first half was good though

  22. Dextro_PT

What this tells me is that Ubisoft is very good at recruiting, and then terrible at using the talent they have at hand which… makes perfect sense given the history of the publisher and the games they put out.

I don’t think people would be as annoyed at Ubisoft if they had never delivered interesting games. It’s more that they constantly under-deliver on games that have immense potential.

  23. farNdepressed

Boy if imagine if Ubisoft management wasn’t ass. They would have been on different level

  24. EugeneStargazer

I love Stray! Such a rich tapestry and storyline. The cat and B12’s relationship really tugged at my heartstrings, the finale was amazing.

I have all the achievements except the fast run, because there’s so much to see I can’t help but slow down here and there.

Oh wait, my cat also hasn’t scratched everywhere it can scratch.

Also r/pioneersofpagonia is from an ex ubisoft dev, the settlers inventor himself Volker Wertich. He worked on the latest settlers game. It should have been a modern settlers game, but sadly Ubisoft wanted to make a RTS Game (again..) out of the settlers Franchise. Volker then left Ubisoft and did make his own version of a new modern settlers game.

  26. Wooden_Echidna1234

It’s hard to believe with how shit the jumping mechanics are for Expedition 33. If I have to restart the beach mission or painting area again, then I might commit a crime.

  27. Rukasu17

It’s kind of ironic that Ubisoft has such a great number of hidden talents in their ranks but management makes sure they keep making the most boring by the numbers games. That is until said hidden talents get tired of getting bossed around and quit to work somewhere else and make games that actually remain relevant longer than their release month

  28. UziWasTakenBruh

This what happens if passionate devs are not under these money hungry corporations.

  29. atomjvd

“ex ubisoft employee” and, you know, a few hunderd more developers
do people think games are made by a small group of people alone or something? lmao

  30. PixelBoom

    And both are amazing games.

Stray was actually the first game I got on my PS5 and it was beautiful.

  31. FlamboyantPirhanna

I mean, what sort of people went from Ubisoft to these? It’s meaningless to say because people bounce around from project to project and studio to studio. A junior programmer at Ubisoft can go to another junior or mid level position at one of these games, but it’s not like they have any connection to any of the decision making.

  32. monkeynicaud

It’s amazing what you can do when you don’t have to worry about your manager bringing you into the bad touch closet!

  33. Beat_Saber_Music

Corporations of major size to the point of becoming quite inhuman hate risk so they only go with the boring safe option, where as indpendent smaller and more flexible developers in turn are free to take risks and do more interesting stuff that would be too risky for for major developers.

There are indeed many excellent indie games, but there are also several more failed smaller projects that never really took off truly. I mean the train horror game was in terms of game quality not the best game by a long shot, but its idea and premise of fighting a sentient train was enough to make people love it, and that is the kind of games big corporate studies don’t want to make necessarily, because they seem risky.

  34. Misterbreadcrum

Stray is so underrated. I know it’s generally well received but I feel like people were disappointed because they expected to be absolutely blown away by cat-physics or something, and it just kinda turns out that playing a cat is like playing any other video game character.

The world and vibe is the absolute soul of this game, and at its heart is the relatively unrestricted freedom you have to explore it in the same way a cat might if such a world were real. I have an entire folder of all the screenshots you can take when you find a cat bed and the camera pans out to produce a really wonderful shot.
