Got this steal at a rummage sale (1$). What should I do with it?

    It’s a 11 years (almost 12) old mechanical drive of insignificant capacity. Cheap new SATA SSD is faster, more reliable and consumes less power. There is absolutely no reason to use 1TB hard disks anymore.

    8-20TB, yes, they are useful for storage in NAS systems.

    Assuming it works, it’s a good drive for offline backup.

    Nuke the contents, then test it thoroughly before use.

    put it in a case and resell it for $30 as an external hdd

    Run recovery tools and see if there’s anything juicy.

  8. Harvest the ultra strong magnets and super shiny metal platters.

    Check for bitcoin or the naughty images

    Securely erase the drive using Eraser or a similar program.

    Then test it out thoroughly. There are multiple programs that can do this. I use the paid version of Hard Disk Sentinel and run a reinitialize on my HDDs before putting them into service.

    If the drive checks out, put it to work.

    Run basic file recovery on it, check for crypto wallets

    You can use it to store games for example or keep a second copy of your photos
