Windows defender is really good nowadays, just with some caution you don’t need an extra antivirus.

  2. EiffelPower76

I use ESET NOD32 for all my Windows computers

  3. Recent-Sink-4253

I stick with windows defender and just don’t do stupid shit online. Never had an issue, most 3rd party antivirus is full to the brim with bloatware

  4. alphagusta

Literally just practicing some common sense, and windows defender. Thats all you need.

If you get hit with something because you keep clicking yes and allow on weird chinese websites thats on you.

  5. LuckyCross

Correction: Windows Defender was only good since Windows 10, even though it was available with 8. For XP and 7 you would use MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials).

  6. Windows Defender + Virustotal.com for stuff you don’t trust is all you need.

For the 1% of windows users who are also super users that frequent this sub sure….

When you people regurgitate it to family and friends, tell them don’t buy av with their new pc because they don’t need it, uninstall it for them because that’s what you read here, and they get rolled, not so good.

I personally don’t know why people keep making claims like this.

Windows Defender is pretty good nowadays. Good enough. But there are paid solutions out there with a higher detection rate. So making memes saying they are bad or worse is just blatantly false.

Now to be clear. There are paid products out there that are actually worse than Windows Defender.
But the good AV Solutions are still better than Windows Defender.

Windows defender free version + virus total + the free version of Malwarebytes covers up all 3 sectors that a paid AV would for 0€

the problem is overlap and conflicts, it’s not like windows defender is amazing, you just shouldn’t have 2 active at the same time

I genuinely wish HijackThis didn’t become malware. It was easily one of the best malware removal tools for the first couple of years it was around(as long as you knew what you were doing with it). It’s insane to me that 95% of all 3rd party antivirus programs became malware in it’s own form, and the other 5% are annoying as fuck with constant pestering notifications.

  12. VoyagerOfCygnus

Ublock origin + Windows Defender as well as myself and virus total for sketchy shit is the golden combo

  13. TheSystemBeStupid

I’ve used ESET for a while now. Haven’t had any issues with malware, it gives useful notifications, it doesnt hog resources like some others I’ve tried and it has some nice tools that I’ve used on a few occasions. Defender is too annoying with its false positives alone.

  14. Windows defender and a malwarebytes scan when i feel something weird on my pc

  15. EstablishmentOnly929

Ublock Origin (or network ad blocker like PiHole/Adguard Home) + Defender go a loooooong way.

I haven’t had a single malware detection on my Windows computer since adding Adguard Home with malware block lists to the network about 2 years ago.

Avast and Bitdefender are other good products, just can be spammy with popups. Too much suspicion around Kaspersky to trust it.

  16. Character_Ad_1018

Lol the same people that left all the day 0 exploits for NSA to use for years and then got the worst hacks ever about 12/11 years ago? Man how people forget stuff.

  17. Lukewarm take: you don’t need windows defender either.

  18. SlingingTriceps

What if you just think twice before running something you downloaded from a shady website?

  19. From my experience however win defender indeed good novadays, its also protecting the system from the advanced users… So however i always give it a chance, after a few months i endup disable it.

  20. It’s so funny that it’s the case now it was only a decade ago when windows defender was completely useless at blocking only the most basic of things

  21. chrisbobsquarenuts

Kaspersky was way better than defender. Shame it was a russian product. But probably why it is was so much better

  22. chloro9001

The first thing I do on a new install of windows is remove defender

  23. ChaosDoggo

Recently convinced my dad to finally get rid of McAfee after showing a video of how much McAfee does to protect you (which is fuckall) compared to Windows Defender

  24. ninja2126

Windows defender now is really good. But posts like this tell me people don’t remember the old windows defender.

  25. Sky_Fighter0

For scanning computer malwarebytes is more effective but most of the time not needed

  26. Z_e_p_h_e_r

I also use win defender now, but I still like/miss the features eset had and the general usability and gui of it.
