And it runs flawlessly, 9070xt chews this games

stop blaming the engine. Fortnite uses the latest version of UE, and it runs on phones. it is the devs being forced to crunch for an unrealistic release date. UE is often used because it is accessible, constantly growing, and incredibly strong when used correctly.

I miss BF1
Might try to hop on n play some soon
TalkWithYourWallet
The fact these comparisons still exist is wild
Different engines, different games, different complexity, different visual styles
BF1 and Rivals are both good looking games with different strengths and weaknesses. Your screenshots show BF1 in its best light
Ishimuro
Is that not the intendet way it works? Newer titles needing newer and better hardware. Like Warcraft 3 needing better CPU/GPU than Starcraft.

This “10 yrs old title” looks better than most of UE5 slop, while running in 120fps on 1080Ti…
Source: I have 1080Ti.

far cry 5 looks great too

I was not prepared to find out BF1 is 10 years old. I feel so old. Thank you for causing a late 20s crisis for me.

BF1 was just too ahead of its time. Imagine if it released this month it would smash records

Even Crysis (2007) graphics hold up fairly well
+ FEAR’s (2005) enemy A.I. still rivals (or even beats) modern 2025 games, 20 years later
+ the old school games’ attention to surround sound (EAX / A3D) was something special
+ the Physics engines of the past
We have lost our way…

The bar continues to plummet for AAA video games.

The frostbite engine will always be the goat of graphics and performance
TheRealGouki
You do know the requirements of a game aren’t tied to how it looks? Also the requirements can be way off too. Like your not getting those kind of settings on a 1060. 😂
A game like peak a small indie game is asking for a 2060.
edit: after looking more into it, you can get those setting, but I do have to say that a 1060 came out the year this game came out and it was a pretty high end card. Marvel Rivals requirements the 2060 which came out 4 years before the game.

But if u look under bf1 textures under microscope u will see a lot of not so good looking textures. The problem with modern games is that they have like 10% better graphics with like 100% more gpu demand. Back in the days Devs did good job of cutting corners in order to make games look good while still maintaining performance, now they prefer to spend less time doing so. Kinda similar to how web dev has been developing, like back in the days (especially when smartphones became mainstream) it was very challenging to “export” pc grade websites like YouTube or Instagram on phones (since they had very limited resources) so Devs tried to “optimize” (cutting corners is more accurate imo) to make stuff work at all cost. Also I don’t get ue5 hate, I believe it’s as good as ue4 but most modern releases would be not so good with or without ue4.
ZepTheNooB
UE5 lighting is very intensive.
Kyosji
The fact that BF1 was the peak of visuals for Battlefield, and the quality has gotten lower than BF3 since then is hilarious
Specific-Barracuda75
Is it just me or does this game look shitloads better in pc compared to ps5? I only have a 3060 laptop and loaded up bf1 and had to turn some settings down just so I could see the enemy as I felt like there was more things going on with the vegetation’s and explosions etc , I swear it was so much better or am I just imagining it?
bigred1978
Do people still play this game?
Never played it and it looks like my kind of thing.
Jhawk163
You also have BF4, which is 12 years old, still looks better and runs better than most new games.
The Frostbite engine is gorgeous, and what was a demanding but good looking game for its time is now jjust good looking, modern hardware can run these titles with ease.
FPA-Trogdor
Battlefield 1 was PEAK battlefield atmosphere. Give me BFV gun play and movement, and BF1 atmosphere, set it literally at any point in history, and it would be the perfect BF game. I have no hopes for 6, because I can’t handle another disappointment lol. I might just stop gaming.
yogur23
Not a fair comparison tbh, Unreal Engine is a free engine open for everybody. Frostbite is a crazy good engine made by hardcore C++ developers, I’m still amazed by how performant their engine is, but it must be expensive af + it is DICE exclusive.
scr33ner
Frostbite is a hell of an engine (before EA decided it would their go to engine for all their in house games).
Purple-Business-8375
Compare how much dev time it took to simulate the lighting in BF1 compared to today’s games where the GPU does all of the heavy lifting to generate the correct lighting in real-time.
PeanutAble1916
Im playing it since release date and i still play it , there is always something fun to do – sadly community servers carry this game otherwise is invisible aimbots speed hacks full armor even with the ”new anticheat” the dice servers experience
My favorite thing to watch was speed cheater with infinite rocket launcher ……… in bf5

…why is it funny that a 10 year old game has lower system requirements than a new one?

Unreal Engine 5 is an anchor on the gaming industry.

Battlefield 1s art direction also carries it hard.
A_PCMR_member
To be fair the Dice engine was made from the ground up with mid range machines and lowend systems (console CPU) in mind.
If you have a large multiplayer franchise you want maximum sales at the initial release to get as many people hooked as you can.
ANY multiplayer game using UE5 should be shunned. Fancy over performance is shit in multiplayer
Xeroticz
You’d be better off comparing this to a game with a similar visual style to Battlefield than something using extremely stylized visuals.
This is reddit though so I can tell this whole post is made in bad faith anyways.
JohnSnowHenry
That’s not hilarious, it’s just normal…
Battlefield uses their own engine already optimized for their FPS, Rivals uses UE5 that’s an engine that out of the box is not optimized for a specific task.
Companies use UE5 because it’s quick to get results, but only if the optimization part is not a priority.
Companies want money so of course optimization is rare to be a thing

Sure but have you tried the other games using Frostbite engine, like Dead Space or Mass Effect Andromeda? Not exactly a smooth ride for the devs.
Why is that hilarious? It’s a much older game, ofc it require less.

This was back when developers prioritized performance and didn’t lean on DLSS or FSR as a crutch.

BF1 was one of the few games in a long, long time where sitting in an AA turret felt rewarding and engaging even if there was less action. Relieving the ground units from air attacks which had a lot of room to maneuver was a key support which not many wanted to do.
A plane decides to grace your air space and you return the favor with a hail of leading flak. The round ends and you have an absurd K:D ratio but lower points unless you smack a blimp.
One of those “if you you do your job right, people won’t know you’ve done anything at all”.

Agreed graphics now are 1% better and they peaked 10 years ago now we’re just burning hardware up for nothing
G8M8N8
I got BF1 for free two years back or so from Epic, and was very confused to learn that the best looking and feeling game I had ever played up to that point was now considered discontinued.
Does anyone know why everyone moved on from BF1 so quickly? This is coming from someone who has played TF2 forever.
lmao_lemo
It only looks better because it had art direction, which many modern games of today do not. A good example that always comes to mind is Elden Ring, a game that looks incredible, yet appears to be a generation old.
