You aren’t think right about it in space you don’t want to punch a whole in the ship. If you are in hard space IE outside the ship a round getting shot has an equal and opposite reaction you get kicked backwards or the opposite direction of which way the gun is pointed. A knife or sword allows you to attack the joints of a suit and pop the seals and on a ship you don’t have to worry about hitting fragile stuff as much or putting a hole in the hull. Edit on the ground in atmospheres they are cool and allow for bear silent kills.

Nah, I’m just fucking around, it’s purely “rule of cool” and makes throwing knife builds actually viable. It was added with the 2.0 reworks, previous to which throwing builds were a huge hassle as you had to keep a bunch of knives on you and, once thrown, go into your inventory and equip more, keep throwing, until all the enemies were eliminated and then gather up all your knives.
It was super cumbersome, and as such, pretty much nobody used it, so CDPR reworked it completely, which was needed from a gameplay standpoint. Does it make sense? No, but it is cool and fun, which used to be the whole point of video games… so, fuck it, we ball.

Purely a game mechanic to prevent us from having to physically walk up and retrieve the thrown knife every single time. There’s no animation for it returning to the hand or anything, it’s just magically back from wherever it went.
No way I can think of to replicate that, without just filling in the gaps with super future tech that doesn’t exist. Magnets, wires, fucking maneuvering thrusters, whatever you want to headcanon.
BigZach1
You’re actually using a brace of knives, not just one (you can see some NPCs wearing sets of triple throwing knife sheathes). That’s what I’m going with.
I dont think there is a reason why. Probably to make throwing knives usable. Think of it. You got 3 knives and you stick them in 3 dudes. They all die. You got 7 more dudes and no weapons equipped. Thats ass. Personally, I would have liked the way it works now but if each knife had like 3 ammo. That way we can use other weapons instead of three knives. I know someone is going to say that there are builds that use throwing knives with another weapon but those builds are straight up worse than pure throwing knife builds. And throwing builds are the only build that demands all three weapon slots to my knowledge.

Nope. Remember how in Metro 2033 you had the option of using disposable throwing knives? You could have like five, and if you used one, you’d have walk to the corpse to get it back. It worked in that game because it was used like ammo for your hands (lol), without any variations.
Now imagine if you threw your fancy iconic knife in the back of a dude, and you had to run away without being able to recover it. You’d be pissed, amiright?

My headcanon is small silk like cables attached to your hands. The cooldown is the tugging of the cable on the thrown weapon to dislodge from point of impact.

i like to think each knife comes equipped with a 3d printing scabbard, so everytime you use one, its just busy reconstructing the next one
sgtjoe
The OG way was kind of stupid, so they made them on a cooldown. It’s up to your head canon why they reappear. I like to think think you just carry multiple knifes and the retrieval gets a bit handwaived.

Knives come with little fairies who live in the grip. When thrown they come out and throw it back to you. The waiting time is for the fairies to fly out and aim to where you are.

just think of a delayed version of monowire.

Well, before they didn’t come back and it was hard to play that style, so they changed it.
Here’s why and how

The don’t come back
You just have a 3d printer in your hip/butt, decreasing the recall time is upgrading printer speed
That is way when people holding things are done with them, they put them behind their back, to recycle it back into material for the 3d printer
Andromedan_Cherri
I like to think that the Monowire has something to do with it, automatically retracting and bringing the knife back

I pretend that V has a fabricator or something. Basically just auto crafts whatever knife you just threw.
^(kinda like craft spamming in the vanilla release)

You’re thinking too hard. When the game released there was no returning, you couldn’t pick them up either, but I’m not talking about that. When you threw a knife it was gone. Out of your inventory, (ideally) in some poor gonks head. I used to carry like six knives around and craft a new one every time I threw one.

You get more knifes how Genji from Overwatch gets more shuriken, they are hidden in V’s wrist and a new knife just ejects out

I think about throwing knives as coming in sets and the time it take the knife to come back is the time V is fumbling with the next one from the pouch, which naturally gets shorter the better V’s skill is.
EntropicSingularity1
In my headcannon V just keeps a bunch of copies of the knife and picks them up in the meantime.
