Can’t play the game I legally purchased because Denuvo decided it shouldn’t let me

For context, I was benchmarking the game on both Linux and Windows to see the performance differences. Upon switching back and forth, it now won’t boot and tells me in that link to wait 24h before opening it again.

It probably detects it as using it in two PCs and activates whatever limits it has to prevent sharing, so stupid. I know “Denuvo bad” is a tired take in 2025 but this is the first time it’s happened to me lol

Some games – check tech media outlets, they often run into that problem – have an activation limit. It’s stupid, but using things like Denuvo already shows that some companies do not trust the people that are acutually paying money for their games.

DRM will always impact the paying customer the most.

I also find it funny they keep it in such ancient game.

denuvo sucks. i have about 800 original games and i still hate it.

  5. Hauber_RBLX

that is why Denuvo is no a big no for me. im on windows but denuvo is not touching my pc – i did that once and never again.

Dirt 5 was my least favorite of all of the Dirt games going back to Dirt showdown. It’s hardly rally at all

I avoid all games that use Denuvo like the plague. I’d much rather just play something else; either that, or I’ll buy physical console versions, and you’d better believe they’ll be used copies.

  8. Looks like you’ll have to “sail the seven seas” to find a way around this crap.

This is exactly why DRM should never be a thing. It just punishes the people who don’t pirate.

  9. I know this sub does not have the same resentment on denuvo compare to other subs, but I don’t buy games that has denuvo. I buy games that doesn’t have DRM, and pirate the ones that have, or just not play at all.

    Man DRM always sucks

I own GTA V yet pirate it, so I don’t have to deal with the R* launcher, and it launches fucking 20x times faster

    Say it with me, everyone:
If buying isn’t owning, then pirating isn’t stealing

  12. GuaranteeRoutine7183

Man I love piracy, why is it that when we buy games legally we lose all our rights our money and our joy (looking at you payment processors) but when we pirate all we lose is time to search the install that isn’t laced with a virus

  13. This is why I don’t buy stuff with DRM. Keep that always online stuff away from my offline experience.

*You’ll own nothing and be ~~happy~~ unhappy..*

  15. Just show this to the next one that starts to argue vs you here when you say you don’t want to buy a game because it has Denuvo.

Tho most studios refuse to pay for it for more than a year or two. Tho this game is now what? 5 years old atm?

  16. sHoRtBuSseR

Worst entry in the series anyway

    But fuck Denuvo

  17. No-Mind7146

Pirate it and you won’t have to deal with drm

  18. This is why I’ll never get people who defends drm. The paying customers always gets fucked.

  19. Socratatus

RDR2 Rockstar was one of the worst. Could barely play that game longer than a minute cos of their stupid DRM. Even when I went to their trouble shooting they gave me the run-around. They just didn’t care. They had my money. It was a birthday present too along with a nice Western cowboy hat someone got me.

That was the first time I ever I went on the High Seas just to play the game I bought. You turned non-criminals into criminals trying to stop criminals, Rockstar. Hope you’re proud of yourselves, Rockstar Idiots.

  20. TheRealTechGandalf

Fuck all and every DRM out there.

I swear to god, it’s getting excessively easier to use pirated software than pay for the bloody thing and get screwed over at every step.

  21. Smith6612

Well, now you have a good excuse to sail the seas. Why should using Linux impact the ability to play the game you bought? Especially if the underlying game code already works?

  22. BreakerOfModpacks

DRM should be a thing of the past… and that isn’t just ’cause I want to pirate stuff.

  23. Euphoric-Mistake-875

Don’t worry. Everything will be subscription based before long. Then you definitely won’t own the games. It will be just like TV apps. Paying a bunch of monthly fees for games you don’t even play because you forgot you was paying for it.

“Look people are telling you to pirate it but remember that is wrong..your only solution is to buy another copy of the game since you have already used up your limited time licence on this one, remember kids be safe and don’t be lured by those sweet sweet pirates with all thier claims of freedom and games preservation and such.

Stay legal, pay again…. Oh and BTW this time it’s will be 80 dollars for tariff reasons ….” – Council for the protection of gaming in Europe (and not at all a lobby group made of largest mostly American game publishers)
