Mountains of evidence against this abortion of a standard, yet people are STILL buying cards with this connector.

Consumerist brainrot at its finest.

Because if you want 5090 performance you don’t have other options

  2. SomeTingWongWiTuLo

Ok genius. So how are you going to achieve 5090 performance then?

  3. Ignorance.  Spending several thousand dollars on an object that will destroy itself, and if it’s a 4090, Nvidia can’t even provide you with a replacement when it does fail.  At best, they give you a 5080 which is half the card, and they will not offset the huge fiscal difference.  You’re just out money, period.

  4. I don’t want to be that guy, but that cable is nowhere near in.

  5. Because we’re not engineers and can’t put our own plugs on. Kind of got to buy what they’re going to sell.

  6. pearshapedscorpion

Because most people aren’t intentionally trying to cause a meltdown, unlike the video there, so they plug the connector in all the way and don’t push weird voltage draws beyond regular usage.

  7. Because we are stupid and stupid is what stupid dose 😉

  8. chloro9001

Because I’ve had zero issues over the last 3 years

  9. What choice do we have? Is there an AMD GPU that offers features and performance on par with a 4090?

The sole 9070 owner that I know recommends against the 9070XT because its not a smooth plug and play experience.

  10. My daily driver’s car had its production stopped after its reputation was tarnished by numerous fires.
Even so, I use it and like it, so I bought an RTX 5080 to pair with my car hahaha

  11. kreteciek

Let me introduce you to a crazy concept OP: not every consumer is a 200% invested passionate. Most people if they’re aware of which GPU to buy, care only if it’s the correct RTX number or/and VRAM amount.

  12. No-Builder-9185

OP taking his anger out on us since can’t take it out on Nvidia…. Cry baby

  13. The 12vHighFailure connector is such a piece of garbage.

  14. Icy_Investment_1878

I dont even understand why nvida evem greenlit this shit, feels like it does more harm than good

  15. Why do you care? This has been a risk since it launched, what spurred you to wake up this morning and make this post?

I doubt your doing it out of fear of others well being… so what is it?

  16. XWasTheProblem

Because some people need this powerful hardware, unfortunately.

And no, AMD’s offerings are not a replacement for many workloads Nvidia GPUs can do.

  17. Fair enough, but name another option that you can get 24gb. With warranty and without scrolling through used ones.
That’s why i`m going to stay on 40 series until either it breaks or this price insanity will end.

  18. The fact that this card doesn’t have a dual 12v connector still baffles me.

  19. Because this is a 1 in a million defect and money is not an issue for me so I go for the best.

  20. BabaimMantel

I just got an insurance for 10 years in Germany and can chill if it melts either get a new one or my money back.

  21. -WitchfinderGeneral-

They need to adjust their system to accommodate higher gauge wires and more robust connectors. If they don’t want to lose the margins then raise the price. At this point why the fuck not, it’s already insanely expensive to look at pretty pixels on a screen, what’s another $100 a card. Good grief..

  22. Big-Resort-4930

Mountains lmao. People are so terminally online and braindead that have no way of discerning what’s based in reality anymore.

Do you really believe that most 12vhpwr connectors and the GPUs they are powering are going up in flames? Do you believe it’s even a minority? 10% perchance?

  23. What a chud post, yeah we know. Signs of an underdeveloped brain with your lashing out comments for reasons unknown.

  24. Alan_Reddit_M

I mean unless you’re LTT and want to turn this from a fire hazard into a fire guarantee, I don’t really see how anybody has a choice, especially creative professionals and AI enthusiasts that NEED the CUDA cores specifically

  25. M0istT0welette

LMAO u got the whole nvidia army after u rn i was wondering why it smells so much in here xD

  26. null-interlinked

The thing is, this is mainly an issue on GPU’s that pull a lot of power and are nearing the spec limits. Thus the 4090 and 5090. It is super rare to find this issue on the 80 series and lower. I mean there are also known cases where the normal PCI express plugs melt.

  27. shadowstripes

I had no issues with my 4070S, and none in the past 6 months of using a 5080, so why wouldn’t I? Worst case scenario I just send it in via RMA.

  28. linuxares

I’m looking at a 9070xt Nitro+, but it uses the 12hpwr connector. However it doesn’t use that stupid amount of power.

  29. InternetExploder87

Maybe I’m naive/ignorant, but I’m amazed there haven’t been revisions, or AIB boards haven’t added load balancing to the PCBs to fix this. This was an issue with the 40 series, still an issue with the 50 series. Are they just not gonna do anything until they started getting lawsuits for burning people’s houses down?

  30. Disastrous-Can988

Because no alternative options for the same performance, I feel like thats just common sense so no idea how something that basic is hard for you to understand.

  31. Somewhere between brand loyalty and 5090s being as powerful as they are. I’d love to see AMD or Intel outdo them in performance, but I don’t see that happening in a while

  32. LinceDorado

Because it’s fine for 99,999% of people who use it, the error usually occurs when the plug isn’t in all the way and you are just looking to farm karma.

  33. candiedbunion69

Because the spicy failures are a minuscule fraction of units pushed.

  34. NonSmallJohn

The one in the video isn’t plugged in correctly causing poor contact. It probably should have been designed better though to prevent the possibility of this happening.

  35. Xxdaunknown1307xX

Bro said abortion instead of abhorrent 😂🫵

  36. Looks like normal functionality. Its literally called FIREwire.

  37. Tricky-Background600

Got a 12vhpwr connector on my first card then on my 4080 and now on my 5080 .
    Always worked flawless.
Dont use adapters or bad psus or put to much voltage trough it. You should be fine.

    If not that sucks lol..

  38. The only way they’re going to change this is with a giant class action lawsuit or someone dying in a house fire as a result of this _terrible_ design.
