This is something Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot was recently questioned about by investors during a meeting, where he stated:
"Outlaws was released at a time when the brand that it belonged to was in a bit of choppy waters."
I wouldn't say he's wrong and it's definitely a factor but he's also leaving the part out about how toxic HIS brand is at this point and how mediocre the game was at launch.

At first my thought was that I partially agree, but honestly seeing what Battlefront 2 is doing right now, and how successful Andor is, I think they just missed the mark with the game. Like most projects that fail it just needed real writers who wanted to tell a story and some more time in the oven.
Respawn makes a Star Wars game and is successful.
Ubisoft makes one and flops “because of the brand”
Yeah, it flopped because the brand it belong to this time was Ubisoft.
Personally I blame protector of rapists Yves Guillemot who should have been sacked along with all his abuser friends and family members, he is in charge of the company after all.
EA somehow managed to make a successful franchise, though. And if *Andor* S2 is any indication, people are very willing to consume GOOD Star Wars.
I love Star Wars, but I wasn’t the target audience here. Open world games, for the most part, aren’t my thing.
Nah Dog, You Just Made A Shit Game.
I mean I’m sure that’s part of the blame but let’s be real here it flopped because most gamers don’t trust Ubisoft at all anymore. I used to absolutely adore them and I refuse to buy their games anymore due to their absurdly scummy business practices and the extreme mistreatment of some of their most popular franchisees. Don’t even get me started on the abomination that is current Ubisoft Tom Clancy games, the man is rolling over in his grave seeing what they’ve done to his franchise.
Bad vibes didn’t help, but neither did putting out a crap game.
You mean the brand that produced Andor two years prior, and then a successful second season after?
No.
They made a Star Wars stealth game instead of an open-world game.
Everybody wanted the latter, and no one wanted the former except some suit high up at Ubisoft.
Somebody in charge of that project decided what Star Wars fans wanted was a stealth game with forced stealth sections and punishing combat. Oh, and also almost no immersion, very few actual characters, and a standard fill-in-the-blanks plot about a heist and a thief with a heart of gold.
The ea Jedi games were good even though they are ea games. The could’ve been better, but ea. this game also could’ve been good but Ubisoft happened to it. Who wanted a Star Wars stealth game? With bad stealth?
1. Take an IP in decline and give it to a gaming studio in decline.
2. Produce an incredibly generic and repetitive open world game.
3. Make bizarre choices in regards to character design and gameplay.
4. Release it in an unfinished state that is full of bugs.
5. ???
6. Profit.
I liked the game, def not as formulaic as other Ubisoft open world games
I wouldn’t touch that stock with a stick. Incredibly incompetent leadership.
This is like WB blaming DC comics on why Suicide Squad the game flopped. No Ubisoft y’all made a med product that people weren’t willing to pay for. It is not like the game looked bad but it was pretty much modern day assassin’s creed but with a star wars license.
When Jedi Survivors was released, wasn’t the Star Wars IP also at a bad place at that time too? I can’t remember much because I don’t really follow the IP but I remember that a lot of people were still talking bad about the recent movies/shows of the IP before the release of Survivor. And it still actually did well despite the performance problem.
Never EVER buy anything Ubisoft game and expect quality and fun…I admit I made that mistake before with Assasians Creed 3 and 4 and got burned by utter trash with so many bugs and bad story writing and game play. You have been warned.
You made a boring looking Star Wars game. Plus you’re Ubisoft. Those 2 were enough for me to skip.
At this point, who cares? This company is in shambles and a laughing stock, so nothing relevant will come out of them in this state.
Once again showing he doesn’t get the point once again and why UBISOFT is destined to die a slow death unless they can face their own mistakes and actually learn from them to fix it! Or give your son a high level job because nepotism is always a great idea in business… 🤦🏻♂️
Yes, the cause was the IP….. not the unpolished models, not the demo that showcases bad artificial intelligence, not you guys being money grubbing pissants trying to shovel mtx in the game and siloing characters as DLC, not the buggy gameplay and etc…… right……..
I’d argue that in fact the bar was so low that it should have been a home run. The fact that it wasn’t really goes to show how mid the game was. But instead they went with typically formulaic, cookie cutter garbage for most of the game, mechanics were mid to awful, and it was maybe 10-15 hours of interesting story padded with tens of hours of absolute fluff. And for me at least I hand zero issue with Kay, looks or otherwise. It’s just that when you have massive studios turning out things like Outlaws, and then you have tiny studios turning out games like KCD2 and Clair Obscur, there’s just really no excuse other than terrible management and corporate bloat
I want a proper Star Wars game. Not Ubisoft slop with a Star Wars skin.
I’ll say that I got it for free with a video card and never bothered to even play it. Had finished the Respawn Jedi sequel shortly before, so there was some Star Wars fatigue.
But, I agree to the extent that I still had no desire to play it because I do really hate the Disney Star Wars bullshit. I played XWing Alliance for years, have played every other Star Wars game, modded X4 and Stellaris to be Star Wars, etc.
But I just don’t give a damn about the franchise after the ownership change and the terrible movies they have made.
Maybe they shouldn’t have made the in-game model look far worse than her real life counterpart? She looked like a sleep deprived man with a wig on.
We didn’t ruin star wars, star wars ruined our game is the most terrible excuse I could ever conceive of
I miss Lucasarts we got so many awesome star wars games back in the 6th and 7th gen
This renting out of the IP just feels like it strangles the life out of star wars games
No no it’s the gamers and viewers who are wrong
Yet star wars fallen order and survivor sold better
