Operating systems then vs now

  1. I’ve been hearing how Linux is gonna take over Windows any day now for the past decade plus. SteamOS might be the thing that finally pushes into the mainstream.

No one cares what OS you use..let others use what they want

I have a weird feeling some apps are going to start validating that you have a “secure” operating system on your phone/computer.

Linux and Firefox will be considered “unvalidated/unsecured” possibly dangerous software. Think of the children!!!

Too many companies are invested in the internet now and want to control it. 🙁

  4. Really, the problem with Linux is its biggest strength – open source. Since there are so many different ideas for the best ways to do things, Linux is fragmented so a lot of the support for it is community-based. Plus, since the command-line is the easiest way to achieve consistent results across all distros, most of the troubleshooting steps are run through there. Fine if you’re used to it, but a little intimidating if you’re not accustomed to the ways of computing.

Personally, I love it. My Dad was in IT since I was a kid, so I’ve used a lot of the old Windows OSes from back in the days when Windows wasn’t a GUI-nightmare. You really are signing on to be a part time sysadmin though. Just recently I had a failed update grenade my bootloader somehow, and it was a task to figure out how to get a working OS without losing data.

I’m not really sure if there is a possible magic “fix” for these problems that will allow Linux to enter the mainstream, even *if* Microsoft is doing their best to make their product repel the non-enterpise PC market. More likely, the de-bloater tools are going to see a surge in popularity. L

what i’m taking away from this is that windows users long for Unix

  6. JustAReallyTiredGuy

Yeah no, I’ll stick with my Windows thanks.

It‘s not that i dislike windows. I really like it, but really dislike that online stuff that win10 introduced and win11 now forces onto me.
As Tom Scott once said: „I‘m using Windows. Someone will have done this before“.

And thats how you find a ridicolus solution to an even more ridiculus problem, that someone bodged 30y ago and it still sort of works.

I thought this was another Wayland/Xorg post until I saw the subreddit.

I’ve switch to bazzite a day ago and it’s been a ride.

Works decent for gaming but it’s kinda difficult getting things working like RGB controller (if there isn’t a flatpack for it).

Windows really makes using a computer piss fucking easy. If it wasn’t so anti privacy I wouldn’t mind as much but come on….

I love my MacBook Air and it does what it needs to do. Lasts ages, good screen, amazing built quality and arguably the best laptop keyboard around. The Os has is moments but I have zero issues with it. Glad I can navigate macOs, windows and Linux now…

I really wish league was on Linux (or the possibility to install kernel level anti cheats, which seems to be the problem with this and a few other titles)

With all their self imposed rivalry Linux users reminds me of all those MMORPG that babbled about taking down/being the next World of Warcraft only to go f2p or close after a month lmao

  12. This sub is filled with delusional Linux users.

Like bro, have you ever went outside?

  13. I’m sure all 37 linux users found this post enjoyable.

People have been saying this forever, and yet Windows is still on top.

  15. Linux is never going to take Windows over as it doesn’t really come stock with devices + most don’t feel like learning the thing

  16. We all looked at rich people’s Mac OS Leopard and iPhone like that when stuck with poor people’s Windows XP and Nokia until we realised we had it better or no different.

  17. boybrushdRED

Sure. They say Linux is great. You just need to pick the right distro. But if there’s a right distro, why do wrong distros exist?

I don’t think Linux will ever fully replace Windows, but I think it has become a viable alternative for those that don’t want to deal with Microsoft’s anti-consumer behavior.

Witched to Fedora sometime last year and all of my games work just fine with no configuration. The only downside is the lake of professional applications, but I guess that’s what my employer provided laptop is for.

Going to linux over windows is such an overreaction.

More like a group of 5 penguins fighting over who is best for the masses.
