Being the “buddy” my friends call, I pretty much have a list of friends I choose to help or not.
The ones that know basically nothing well I only help if it’s a setting in windows or nvidia control panel, for other things I know it’ll be a pain to understand the problem with their description and fixing it will be even worse so just let someone else do everything.

I’m on the other side of that equation dealing with repair shop slop and saving people from wasting money. Comedians some of them rather than computer technicians.
If “buddy who is really good with computers” has built more than one and preferably built or repaired a good number of systems (me) they’re not always a bad first stop before paying a shop.
The “buddy who is really good with computers” who often *aren’t* “really good” are the typical owner operators of indie repair shops and the staff of the retail ones, and you should treat them like you would a garage in terms of reputation.
Those two businesses, garages and computer repair, are the biggest possible scams the average non-knowledgeable person is likely to face outside of a call from someone in Delhi (just most common location) telling them they have a virus and they need to install TeamViewer now to deal with that.
Call me what you like but I’d take a chance on the “really good with computers” person who didn’t have a financial interest in my machine being so broken they make significant money from it being “broken”.
Anyone who knows anything about computers knows how to troubleshoot them and how hard it actually is to make them “ten times worse” as in its near impossible and carries little to no risk for someone of even medium competence.
Computer repair IS a skill, but it’s a skill that ultimately comes down to being able to search the internet, read manuals and watch YouTube videos with accumulated practical experience tacked on as a bonus stat.
Unless you don’t care about money and have no interest in learning new stuff, learn to fix your own and gain a life skill or you’re taking a gamble no matter where you take it.
I learned because I got quotes from computer repair shops I found “questionable” and I do care about money and do like to learn new stuff so I learned how to do anything I needed to do myself down to levels those people don’t usually even touch.
Not everyone falls within that “enthusiast” demographic or there would be absolutely no computer repair shops in existence, which is absolutely fine and I don’t mind those shops as long as they are not ripping off my friends or family.
I’m interested in what the actual situation that “Happened to me once…just once…” was though, as I’ve never been inclined to use a repair shop and have only used RMA repair once (got same card back still broken).

I had two friends whom where “very good with computers”, both reparations were exceptionally great and held up until complete and utter bricking obsolescence. In fact, both reparations toughed better than said friendships.
ONCE I did go to a “professional” repair man for a new power supply, mine had burnt out. He installed faulty memory in my computer (he insisted I needed the upgrade) and tired to accuse it of running bad because it was “too old” and I was refusing to upgrade windows. I tested the memory and got it out. That computer still can’t use adobe PDF reader anymore because of corrupt files I can’t get to, that can’t be erased, and even “perfectly” uninstalled block the installer. I’m pretty sure I haven’t found out the last bug this created.
I’m getting better to repair myself now.

I can fix most issues but when it comes to random issues I don’t even know I am not about to try figuring everything out
