BioShock creator Ken Levine praises Baldur’s Gate 3 and Clair Obscur, says gamers will “reward” games that avoid “the kind of monetisation” found in most AAA releases

He’s not wrong. I’m much more likely to spend money on a quality game that’s not full of microtransactions or a battle pass… We should reward developers that treat consumers with respect for their time / money.

Yes, they will. 1700+ hours in BG3 and counting on PS5 (so I didn’t get early access)

Hope he releases his Bioshock spiritual successor this decade (forgot what it was named lol).

I’m excited to see what Sandfall will do next, whether it’s more Clair Obscur content or a different IP altogether.

  5. Uhm, that’s really unrelated.
Players just want good quality games.

True but do you prefer making $1B total in sales or $4B a year in sales like EA does from Apex

The best “reward” you can give a game is your time. That being said, the most rewarded games are those monetized like Fortnite, GTA, CoD, Roblox, Minecraft etc, etc.

I haven’t played neither of those games yet, but I get what he means. Both those games have gotten great reviews from most people. We’re going to reward them by trying out their next games or dlc they release.

Make a complete game and don’t spam monetization.

I forgot which sub I was having an argument with, but with things becoming more and more expensive I’m having to prioritize things more and more. Games like BG3 are much more appealing than something like Anthem where the servers are getting shut down and the game will no longer be playable.

  10. It’ll all come down to the economy. I can definitely see AAA crashing and burning if they increase the base price to $100 right when we’re about to go into a massive recession due to tariffs

Probably a horrible place to ask but it just occurred to me to even ask but does anyone know if being a game dev and buying other games to get a feel on what’s been working and what hasn’t in modren gaming can be a tax write off ?

They also reward games with those shitty monetization schemes, it’s why those games keep getting made. They keep making money.

  13. surprise people like good games and not dopamine farm ubisoft titles. ceos are so clueless

  14. Michaeli_Starky

Most gamers don’t give a flying jack about monetization.

  15. ZoharModifier9

The most important part is the game has to be good.

  16. The problem with this theory is that the games making the most money of ALL are the live service games filled with microtransactions and battle passes…

Nothing makes me happier than seeing good games sell millions.

  18. Yes, they will reward it by continuing to turn Gacha games, games like Diablo Immortal and yearly releases like CoD into absolute cash cows, while these exceptional games will stay the exception, because the risk is high and the potential reward very unknown.

And yes, I second the sentiment, only that’s not what’s happening, really. “We” are a tiny minority of the gaming audience these days. Still big enough to have some financial impact, but far from the big fish.

Sadly, there are too many kids these days that buy garbage and reward monetization too. Filthy casuals ruin it for everyone.

Good game more likely result of production that prioritizes game being good.

Consumer most likely to buy good game at fair price.

  21. Now if only the whales would stop supporting the companies doing it though.

The fact that you have people arguing in support of $30 skin packs in CoD is just ridiculous.

Like even if you’re that desperate for free content you have to be able to see that it’s just overpriced slop and the cotent has gotten progressively worse.

  22. thedrunkentendy

Gamers will also reward games that are just plain and simply good.

A good story told well. Without any stupid modern slang or marvel humor.

KC2 2 is another one that popped off. No monetization. No BS. No trying to fit square pegs in round holes.
