a lot of that older hardware is actually pretty useable. a 10 year old rig can still run a lot of newer stuff playably, and anything post-netburst is usually good enough for productivity and web browsing. you can still play some older games on them too. also it's kind of silly to call something bad because it's old, and then say that something even older is cool and interesting purely based on age.

and laptops are cool, you just don't like them cause they aren't intended for your use case.

For the most recent games : Yes.

Outside of that you may slide the red over to about 10 years. For newish and new part at least . At which point leftover stock will raise to needlessly silly prices.

Radeon GPUs arent bad per se, but they follow Nvidia pricing while having barely Nvidia performance. They used to be there performance wise, BUT undercut Nvidia by 150-200€ (When Nvidia priced thier top-end around 800€). So get 20% off for just 10% less performance.

Nowadays its like 10% slower, but in certain locations more expensive.

AND they used to give you a surplus of memory and bandwidth. 8GB when Nvidia gave you 6 at most and only 1 tier up got 8.

Yup, people have been trying to convince me my RX 6600 isnt just obsolete, but was obsolete when it was released because of its featureset.

It has upscaling, raytracing, DX12 ultimate support so Alan Wake 2 with its mesh shaders will run fine, etc., and it can now even force framegen on any DX11/12 game I want. What more is there?

But some people insist that upscaling must be DLSS because FSR is too fuzzy and RT only counts if you can go full PT on CP2077.

Fact is that Im sitting on a GPU that in raster can still trade blows with any 60 tier card, and that Im flat out of serious upgrade options unless I spontaneously start crapping out gold bars.

  3. imagine if it was a laptop with a radeon, right?

It’s so true especially now. My family all runs on 3060s and CPUS: 7,9,and 12 gen intels. None of them know the difference, because it’s mostly Roblox and minecraft.

Their peak gaming experience is on pretty old hardware, and they’re happy as hell.

    6 years ago was 2019…

    should add a very specific line for 2016-2017 where people go “omg!12111!11 1080 ti!!11 ebsest!!1 gpu11111 ever@$2123151!!”

  6. ripnburn69

I’m gonna keep my gtx 1080ti forever.

The only people who hate AMD Radeon are stuck in the past. They’ve made decent or otherwise amazing GPU the past 10 years or so. Somehow the world has flip flopped and now AMD puts out drivers all the time and Nvidia has more driver problems.

  8. Henry_Fleischer

Yeah, I had someone calling my PC from 2020 outdated. That was 2 years ago. It runs Doom The Dark Ages fine(Minimum settings, 1080P, no upscaling, no noticeable framedrops or stuttering, haven’t tried turning graphics settings up because it looks good), and runs Blender well.

10 year old laptop owner here. It works.

It’s because it’s an enthusiast forum. I see similar things happening in forums for my other hobbies. Some ot the people on here and other hobby subs are out of touch with the average person lol. Most users (me included) have a pc that could be built for the same price as a modern high end GPU and for most people that’s more than good enough.

I’ve got a Core 2 Quad with 8gb, r7 240, and 2*500gb magnetic drives running Win7 from 2011 as my living room computer lol it does what I need it to.

Anything over 5yrs old has always been “old” in the enthusiast community. I’ve been doing this since the early 2000’s and this has been a thing since than. If it works for you, great! That doesn’t mean by some people’s standards or wants it isn’t old.

Also I think you’d see less responses like your meme if people werent on Reddit trying to play CP2077 on high with a 1660 Super and an i5 8400 and wondering why it’s unplayable.

Man Ive got an old Optiple with an i7-6700 that I put a GTX 1650 in, and it works great at 1080p. I had it hooked up in my living room for a while, and it played everything I wanted it to, except newer UE5 games and the new games that require ray tracing. I used that thing more than my powerful gaming PC a lot of the time because I could veg out in my recliner instead of sit in an office chair.

Ive since built a new PC to replace it, and upgraded the TV to a 65″ 4K, so the Optiplex was moved to my moms house for her and my nieces and nephews to use. And the replacement PC has the 3070 Ti that was in my main rig when I upgraded that one to a 5070 Ti. PCMR would also lead you to believe that the 8GB of VRAM would make it useless. But Ive been playing plenty of games with it. A lot of them in 4K @ 60 FPS.

i yet to have some one tell me i should upgrade my flair pc….

I’ve been on reddit for 14 years and a sub here for i don’t know how long. I used to have a look every day on here for some interesting news or advice but it’s basically a shitshow now.

I mean look at the front page, full of shit memes recycled every week about light mode, consoles, FPS, 8GB RAM, etc

  16. Curse-of-omniscience

It’s so funny watching all the people in this sub seething about how an 8gb gpu is not enough to do anything and I need to throw mine in the trash and I’m having a blast playing any game I want, I still haven’t found one I can’t run on mine.

  17. Brolafsky

I haven’t seen anyone say shit about my rig. Then again I don’t really post here a lot.

    i7-11700kf

Truly wish I had a couple of my 15+ year old pc’s still, with their original OS and game loads. They were so good at what they did.

  19. Rich_Supermarket_666

as someone with an RX 6750XT, i feel the pain

  20. random_warlock

Tried to ask several times for advice and got told that the build i was running was literally e-waste and that i should just save up until I can actually buy a real pc, until recently i was running a gt-730 with an AMD FX6100 six core, and 8gb of ram, now i upgraded, now i got a GTX 1050Ti with the same MOBO and processor but now with 12gb of ram (doesn’t matter because my MOBO doesn’t take more than 8 lol) and can play titanfall 2 on max settings like nothing and can play most of the games that everyone of my friends play, granted and obviously most of it on medium setting but hell i can play all that shit with this old crap that i got second hand or literally from the trash, with an old TV/monitor, i don’t understand the obsession with ultra high end pc components and calling shit “obsolete” and gatekeeping the beauty of PC gaming with this elitist comments, it makes me so mad.

when i was little, i was scared of even trying to install anything on my family pc, nowadays i clean it, maintain it, help friends installing OS´s, do IT for people who understand less than me, and all of this with a shit computer and still fear of fucking up, some day i hope i can get a “decent” pc that is actually MINE that i built and bought from scratch (even tho this one counts for that) because it was drilled into my brain that anything below a fking 4090TI with a i9 and 128gb of ram and 300TB of spaces is obsolete, and that’s bullshit the subreddit descriptions even says:

    >You don’t necessarily need a PC to be a member of the PCMR. You just have to love PCs. It’s not about the hardware in your rig, but the software in your heart! Join us in celebrating and promoting tech, knowledge, and the best gaming, study, and work platform there exists. The Personal Computer.

We have to start appreciating and encouraging TRUE BUDGET PC´s because that’s where most of us started! and sadly, where most of us (me included) still are. I am almost 24 years old in a shit country with years of shit economy on its back and its almost impossible to build a “good” pc unless you pour months and months and months of money and effort into it, and thats why i love the PC, you dont have to pour everything at once on to it to play games like consoles, you can build it little by little, piece by piece, and you FEEL the improvement, its an amazing feeling being able to run a game that made your PC literally crash weeks prior, or maybe you couldnt play it because you didnt even had the drive space to play it! OR it ran slow because you had a fking HDD to try and run The Witcher 3 and when you buy that damn SDD and use it it feels like haven, something so small and that everyone says its “so cheap now a days” is like gold to me, so please, lets go back to when we appreciated when a game ran on very old parts and learn again to support least fortunate people and help them with advice, help picking parts, and encouragement.

sorry this got so long winded but its what i feel even if almost no one reads it, but if you have a shit pc, probably worse than mine, don’t give up, its worth it.

Any GPU that is AMD is a waste of money according to this sub.

  22. MoronicForce

Yea man those spoiled rich brats are insufferable. I don’t even care about specs anymore, there are like 2 games that came out in the last 5 years with great graphics that i was excited to play. Now i just use my rig to play indie

  23. Sol_Infra

My PC is 10 years old. i5 6600 CPU. I’ve only upgraded the GPU to a 3060 after my 980Ti went out and added another 8 GB of ram.

Still runs everything I want to run just fine.

  24. Naxster64

Cars, furniture, appliances, all things kind of live by this rule.

  25. GoldSrc

I once read a comment from a guy that said that the 30 and 40 cards were “obsolete”.

  26. tycraft2001

On the subject of 10 year old rigs I present my G74Sx running Linux. 14 year old though from 2011 and runs great for its age.

  27. kdesi_kdosi

for a couple years i only had an old laptop with integrated graphics, life finds a way

  28. SizeableFowl
