Typically you’d choose the hardest gray substance you can still spread around. If it has a slight silvery shine to it, it’s also not bad. Then, you don’t want your gray substance to be electrically conductive. Aluminum powder mixed in oil would be a pretty bad idea. And last but not least, it has to be really, really thermally conductive to get the warm stuff away from the little piece of thinking rock. Otherwise the lightning we put in it will make it too warm and it will stop thinking. That is bad. The best gray stuff people have found is called thermal paste which some people in factories like making.
A pea sized amount of gray paste usually is enough though, as all other stuff will just spew out and make a mess.

Yes, make sure to pick the one that tastes the best so your CPU is happier that way.

Yeah, no matter whether it’s thermal paste, mercury, or cement, should be good anyways

I prefer the brown variety

jokes aside, GN made a whole video about this a couple of years ago, but to summarise, for CPUs you gotta use about the dimension of a grain/bean of rice
Not sure if everyone here is trolling or not, but for anyone actually new to this, it’s called thermal paste and it’s supposed to go underneath the CPU on the pins, not on top.

What are you doing step-heatsink!?

People go their whole lives and dont get a perfect pour like this. Everyone should take notes for their next build

Use concrete for maximum durability/cost.

The mistake in that image is there’s not enough being poured on the motherboard itself, you’ll want at least a half a cm layer and make sure all the VRMs are fully covered before you do your CPU base pour, you’ll also want to ensure it’s millennial gray specifically to prevent any kind of Y2K issues.

I don’t believe in thermal paste, this stuff doesn’t exist.
