Hi guys I'm still new to pcs and I made a rookie mistake I bought a 7800x3d and a asus rog strix z690-e intel motherboard the thing is I got them from a place I can't return i have a cheaper pc build specs below
CPU: Intel i9-12900KF 16 Core Unlocked CPU COOLING: 240mm AlO Liquid Cooling with RGB Fans MOTHERBOARD: Asus Prime Z690M Wifi D4 Motherboard
GPU: RTX 4070 Super 12GB GPU MEMORY: 32GB DDR4/3200 2x16gb STORAGE: 2TB Gen4x4 M.2 NVME SSD

Should I sell the mother board or use it and sell the 7800x3d I really want to have more pfs than I currently do while I also stream I'm just worried that before I can afford another decent motherboard my current stuff will be outdated

When I switched to team AMD from using intel all my life, this is like my fifth PC build. I bought ram that was apparently just for Intel. I didn’t even know that was a thing. Lucky I could return it though. Sad to see you cant but it happens. Try to sell it I suppose. Good luck.

  2. MajesticRat

Definitely sell the motherboard and keep the CPU

  3. TexasPistolMassacre

“Cheaper build” “12900k” huh??? An i9 is cheap???

  4. Well you learned something at least πŸ™‚

  5. Lewinator56

What do you mean you can’t return it? Even with shitty US consumer rights you can return stuff.

  6. tonmc03

Maybe sell on facebook, shave off a couple of dollars for a fast flip. Then charge the losses to experience. πŸ‘

  7. Dark_Age_

As everyone else said, sell motherboard

  8. Suspicious_Relief768

Sell mobo. Then buy either B650 or B850 (but make sure to buy a high quality one with good vrms, for example ASUS Tuf/Rog)

  9. Fearless_Anything_76

Sell the Intel board, cop a small loss on it and chalk it up as experience.

  10. Dragon90o0

Be sure when u get a b650 mobo update the bios to the latest version.

    >I’m just worried that before I can afford another decent
motherboard my current stuff will be outdated

If it runs your games then it isn’t outdated. Why are you caring about something that isn’t happening, It sounds like you’re young and care more about the specs sheet than how well it actually runs.

  12. OFFIC14L

Op please don’t listen to the comments about selling the motherboard and keeping the CPU.

Give me the CPU and keep the motherboard. πŸ˜‰

I thank you for making the rest of us feel better about our own minor lapses

  14. Total_Psychology_385

    Can’t return?

What arse end country are you from mate? πŸ™

  15. ThisIsAitch

Sell the motherboard and buy a cheaper one – you really don’t need to spend that much on your mobo. Paying that STRIX tax.

  16. Chao_Zu_Kang

Tbh not really a “rookie mistake”. Really just you not paying attention if you literally have the same MoBo for your current Intel CPU already. Happens.

Not sure why you’d consider using the MoBo if you already have a working one. Just sell the new MoBo and 7800X3D if you don’t have enough money. Especially latter you should be able to sell for close to the price of your purchase.

  17. wendewende

Did the exact same mistake with my first build. But I sold the proc. Do not make the mistake I made

  18. Ok_Change836

In case nobody has told you yet; Sell the Motherboard.

  19. KernelPanic-42

    This isn’t a rookie mistake, this is a grandmother-buying-presents mistake πŸ˜†

  20. Big_Performance3205

Well imo when 99% of the people go shopping and research they don’t β€˜choose’ a motherboard they choose the CPU first then buy a compatible motherboard. So now why will you sell the cpu and then research again for another one? Just sell the board and get a compatible one

  21. ajcmaster

Sell the motherboard but be aware that you’ll also need to sell the RAM sticks and buy DDR5.

  22. rishthecoolguy

So now is the socket called AGA πŸ˜…

  23. Mycologist_Murky

Yep. This is as much of a Rookie error as it gets. You definetely wont make that mistake again so not a complete loss. As everyone else says, cut your losses by selling the motherboard and keep the CPU.

  24. KianOfPersia

Is it not standard practice for at least a decade to use PC Parts Picker??

  25. SmoothRisk2753

Genuine question. What is the mistake? Im trying to build one on my own

  26. ThePupnasty

Sell MOBO, buy the right MOBO. I have an Intel myself and if I could, id absolutely go AMD.

  27. TheRacooning18

Sell or swap the mobo for a nice amd mobo. The right one this time. Just look up compatible 7800x3d mobos

  28. Blankhet

sell motherboard, specify brand new condition, selling because I got wrong socket so that people don’t think its a scam

  29. Leather_Flan5071

    sell them mother friggin board

  30. Good CPU choice. Sell that intel board and get a cheap amd board. If it got all the ports you need there is no need to go overpriced for some lights or so

  31. RedTuesdayMusic

    >I got them from a place I can’t return

The answer to this is always stop living in a third-world country unfortunately πŸ™

    Literally illegal in Europe

  32. Sea-Debate-3725

If you do sell the motherboard, you are going to need to buy DDR5. Your old DDR4 will not be compatible with the 7800x3d.

  33. CurvyDreamgirl

This ain’t it chief. Back to the drawing board.

  34. Soltronus

    Ditch the mobo.

Return it if you can, sell it on eBay if you can’t.

    My 7800X3D is a powerhouse.

    You won’t regret keeping it.

  35. patrlim1

I did something similar, bought an AM4 board instead of AM5

  36. One could dream to use Intel mobos with AMD CPUs

  37. Not sure if anyone has said it yet, but pcpartpicker can help prevent this in the future

  38. cruel_frames

I’d ask the place you got these from if they’ll make an exception and accept to return the motherboard, I assume it is not opened or used.

It doesn’t hurt to ask, they may be understanding.

Otherwise, sell the motherboard. Intel are shit.

  39. It would be worst if you also had bought DDR4 ram, because it was cheaper.

  40. WizardMoose

Wait until you learn that your performance gains won’t be all that much.

I love the 7800x3d. It dethroned Intel on a whole new level. But having a 12900k and swapping to it without knowing much about computers… That’s the real rookie mistake.

Your current stuff isn’t out dated. Your current setup is great for 1440p gaming. You got another 2 or 3 solid years with that setup. Your fps gains won’t be that big of a difference unless you’re wanting to push beyond 240.

  41. Cup_Lucky

Getting a motherboard is cheaper than getting a CPU sell that motherboard and get an x670 or x870

  42. M4urice

If you live in the EU and you bought this online just send the motherboard back they are forced to accept returns within 2 weeks no questions asked for online purchases. If you’re not in the EU sorry I don’t know but could be work to check out if you might be able to return it.
