It powers on, so I guess we're off to a good start!

Tip that might save you hours: plug your HDMI or whatever display cord your using into the GPU, not the motherboard. Else the pc will use the IGPU which is super slow

  2. OntarioGuy430

I am not used to the GPU box being the same size as the CPU cooler box! It is crazy how crazy things have gotten! Hope he enjoys! Congrats on the Good grades!

You know what, this may be what you could afford at the time, but the 3060 doesn’t matter because you executed and made your sons day by building a gaming pc. This pc should rock for him. Great job.

  4. LordBacon69_69

Reward your kid for his good behaviour,

    W dad.

If the parts aint performing well in the future then he’ll have to earn un upgrade again.

7 9800X3D, with an RTX 3060 is the ultimate mismatch combo. It will be bottlenecked so hard in most games, that the GPU will be your limiting factor in every scenario. If it were me, I would refund the RTX 3060 and put that money toward an RTX 4070 super or RX 7800 XT.

    Older 3060 card : 12GB vram

    Brand new 5060 : 8GB vram

  7. ZZartin

So the 3060 is motivation to do better next report card?

    Good job but…..

  8. ShutterBun

Are there still unsold EVGA cards floating around out there? That’s pretty surprising.

  9. bakuonizzzz

The Noctua Nh-D15 not sure i agree with that considering there are much cheaper ones that perform exactly the same or better than that air cooler and if you really didn’t care about cost then then Noctua NH-D15 2 or something basically the 2nd version of it performs slightly better.

    9800X3D with a 3060, I have seen it all.
But if you upgrade to a better GPU. You gonna have a pretty powerful pc.
All the rest of the parts are pretty solid.

  11. WorldPhysical7646

I would suggest looking forward for a 5070 to 5080
    Or 9070xt
Keep the 3060 for now and properly for a smaller build

    I FING LOVE BOXES MANNNNNNNNN.

    What is inside of them?

  13. The_Real_SC

That’s a great build and an awesome gift! Its going to feel great to them to be rewarded for their hard work at school. Coming from someone who got nothing from their family throughout childhood, regardless of how I did in school or life, that’s gonna make a big difference in how they build their work ethic!

I love that you not only rewarded their hard work, but you’re also showing that you recognize their hard work and that you’re proud of their hard work. That makes all the difference to kids while they’re developing and encouring hard work and acknowledging it is going to strengthen the bond you have with them as well.

Great parenting and congrats on putting together a great build for your kid!

Definitely could’ve spent half as much on the CPU and use that money to get a half decent GPU.

I’m guessing your son won’t need that level of processing power, and for future builds it’s always better to spend more on the GPU than anything else if the system is for gaming.

  15. Upbeat_Dig_3108

Lucky duck, where I live I get nothing for good grades they’re just expected to

  16. Otherwise_Signal_161

My son is two at the moment, but I’m looking forward to when this time comes. Assuming he’s interested and computers aren’t 50K by then.

  17. AlienInOrigin

Well there goes the good grades…

  18. dootytootybooty

First good job to your son.
With that said this is a terrible choice of parts.

You would have been much better off getting a 9600x+ peerless assassin cpu cooler. You would have saved ~$350 which would’ve been enough to have gotten a RTX 5070 or a RX 9070. Both GPU’s would be significant uplifts over the 3060.

You could’ve also saved another $60 and gotten a tuf b650 over b850. Not much reason to get the newer board.

Friendly tip for the NH-D15! Make sure it has the NM-AMB12 Offset bracket for AM5. It can make a 3-6c difference in temps alone due to the dye being slightly lower on the CPU and the 9800X3D tends to run fairly warm.

Can I be your son? I used to get great grades back in 2000 had straight A’s (except French language class during my sophomore year of HS, the shame!) got into Harvard, Stanford, all the fords and vards, perfect SAT scores perfect SAT II scores, mowed the lawn, took out the trash, shoveled the snow, played the violin and the piano, model asian son.

Now buy me a Mercedes dad.

But seriously, congratulations to your family. Your son will be happy and I hope you guys can build the PC together. My son is still young but I’ll be building a new rig with him in a decade or so. Just trying to savor the moments with my children before they grow up too fast.

For the record OP, it’s not “bad” you’re just spending a lot more money than you need to.

  22. Panterkuu

3060 + 9800x3d is a bit of an odd pairing

  23. MithrilFlame

    Air puter, love it 😀

You chose fine. Best choice for gaming CPU. And GPU has 12Gb, gives it longer legs. Technically the others comments have points, but this is a feel good reward build. Feel good! It will run well 🙂 and gives easy future upgrade options. Well done parent 😁

  24. psychoticworm

It will run Fortnite and Fall Guys. Black Myth Wukong or Borderlands 4 might struggle a bit on that GPU..
