just added a boom arm and mounted it at the back of my monitor, slightly off to the side.

Does it work for you? That’s all that matters.
I have mine folded and put away when I’m not using it. The important part is that it’s not blocking your view of the screen. Other than that, anywhere you want is fine. Low profile arms are cool, too.
