Hello I am 15 and I finished building my PC yesterday. Really happy it booted first try into the BIOS and everything works. Today I posted about it on here which is something I have been looking forward for months.
But I feel so happy that it feels overwhelming and like its added a mix of sad. I am almost tearing up and I just really feel odd. Its probably because I am never usually so excited.
Anyone else got this feeling when building their first PC?

I bought a pre built pc, but I felt amazing when I managed to upgrade the psu.
Congratulations! I hope you have a lot of fun with it.
I think there’s always a bit of sad when you achieve a goal you’ve been looking forward to for a long time, just because it’s no longer ahead of you.
Feels good man. Is that a B580?
It is an amazing feeling, enjoy it, and enjoy your monster of a PC, best part of it all, you damn well know it’ll perform its best because you built it, unlike prebuilts which leaves you wondering where’s the cost saving part that will fry it all up
It’s the first time in life you feel that way, there will be more to come.
It’s kind of like the realization that what you were so extremely excited about doesn’t immediately change your life. That’s the sadness part for me. But: what I realized is that most of the time I was so excited about something, it really changed my life in all the ways I imagined. I just didn’t notice until later.
And what changed my life the most? Getting my first PC. It was the entryway of everything in my life. My job is now programming, which I started because I loved modding games on my PC. I still am excited for every upgrade to my PC. I still love turning it on. There’s a new world ahead of you, I am happy you successfully built your first PC! I think no matter how excited you are about your PC, you probably aren’t excited enough.
Well done, man. I, too, built my first PC a few weeks ago and was very happy it posted first try (and that my cable management was pretty good for a beginner). But happiness turned into slight sadness, when I realised that I rather play on consoles. I rarely turn on the pc to play a round of Hunt Showdown with the bois and when I do so, I start missing my consoles in the other room lol Oh well. Maybe it’ll click for me one day 🤷🏻
As soon as you load up that “One Game” you’ve been dying to play at max settings or whatever your goal is, the sadness should go away.
Enjoy it brother, you did the thing, now let the girl run!
yeah first time booting, updating the bios, installing windows, setting everything else up without any problems was so much joy and relief. Still so glad I ordered all the parts and built it myself
Yeah, you feel a bit sad now because you think reaching your goal means you are finished… But then you realise this pc is actually just the start of a potential never ending journey.. Maybe a new mobo upgrade, maybe a new cpu, maybe a new gpu and in a few short years your pc has evolved and will keep evolving!
Enjoy the journey, it’s nowhere near finished!
totally get the feeling! now i just stare at my PC in awe (and sometimes whisper to it, “i made you”)
It’s that overwhelming feeling of “oh shit I did it” and now all the times u thought about gaming on pc are about to come true
Dude, I feel you!
I’m 26 years old. I got my first PC when I was 11, but it was never a high end PC.. I could run most games I wanted to play, but no 144hz stuff, you know.
I’ve had a decent job for about 1 year and a half now and could afford a high end PC, but never did go for it because I felt like it would be silly for a grown man to spend so much money on that.
But it’s my main hobby after all, and I love spending money with gifts for my girlfriend, friends and family, so I decided to treat myself and go for it.
I’m completely overwhelmed now that I got the “perfect” setup I’ve always dreamt of, while I do feel shitty for spending that much money, and that same “sad” feeling even though I couldn’t be happier with my purchase. Enjoy your PC dude!
Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened, or something like that.
Brother, how sweet… what you feel is satisfaction, fulfillment. You set a goal and you’ve achieved it. You’ll have plenty of moments like this in your life; just don’t get discouraged when things get a little difficult. Keep going, persist, and you’ll achieve more. By the way, congratulations on your new battle station!
I honestly felt this way about a cell phone so I totally understand
Absolutely!
I built my first when I was 11 or 12. Dad taught me. And it was pretty surreal that first time around.
Happy gaming!
What you’re experiencing is accomplishment. Often times accomplishing a new and difficult and expensive task can feel overwhelming in the moment, and when it just works, it can feel “smaller” than what it actually is.
Building your first PC, or really first of anything in your hobby of choice, is a massive accomplishment, and you should feel proud of yourself and this achievment.
You should especially feel proud that you did the research, and learned how to properly build this PC, and it worked first time. The only thing left for you to do is enjoy gaming on it, and show it off to any and everyone because it is something that you’re proud of!
Congratulations!
Yea man, it’s a pretty cool feeling! Im the same age as you and just recently built my second PC, and holy cow am I proud. Here’s a photo:

I remember when my dad brought Home a Pentium 90 with 16mb of ram.
This was after using an Apple2e and an old IBM with MSDOS.
I remember being so happy!
Enjoy your machine 🙂
The grass is always greener on the other side feeling.
Just build mines a little under a month ago, dude the glee I had lasted an entire week, woke up 3 times in the middle of the night on separate nights just to see that I actually built it my first boot up I was grinding ear to ear
Still trynna figure things out like setting and whatnot but man is it fun lol

After experiencing this phenomenon a bit more, you will realise that we tend to be more excited when we’re in the process of fulfilling a goal, than when we actually do end up fulfilling it.
It’s literally how our brains are wired, it’s a survival mechanic we developed to keep us motivated into doing things.
“Sadness” is a good description of what you’re feeling, personally I call it “emptiness”. The best (and healthiest) way to fill this “emptiness” up, is to set a new goal. You finished building your PC, now set a goal for finishing a videogame or something. Learn to enjoy what you build/create, even though it’s sad the creation is finished! 🙂
If you want to experience the same feeling, start a creative hobby like drawing, miniature modeling, learn a musical instrument, etc. You’re 15, the possibilities are endless! Try a lot of things and see what works for you. But again, don’t forget to appreciate your creations despite your sadness! It sounds obvious but trust me, it isn’t and it’s quite important to learn to appreciate it!
Hope I helped and sorry for the long comment.
Not to worry – There’s always upgrades to plan for in the future! The build goes on!
Spends most of a year saving the cash. It finally gets built and I feel a bit empty.
Yeah, happens to everyone i think, what do you say we play something to get you off of that feeling?
