Doing some research how unstable they are, and the fact such a pricey part is in the bin, do I risk it and buy a new board/ ram / water cooler / psu to test it? Im on the fence.
It'll be a yuggge upgrade from my i5-5000 something
I bought this one back in September. Not sure how long they take to downgrade, but there have been no issues so far. Using it for gaming primarily, along with video and photo editing
You definitely want to get rid of it. I’ll gladly take it off your hands for $15.

I also found an i9-14900k at a bin store. Took the risk and built a PC. It would POST and run but after about an hour it would overheat and blue screen. Tried everything to keep it cool but nope. I ended up putting an i5 in the PC because I couldn’t afford an i9 at regular price haha.
Worth the risk IMO
Edit: Just remembered mine didn’t match the serial on the box. Looks like someone had a tray CPU that went bad and they swapped it

The 13th and 14th gen intel have been some of most awful gens.

The issue is related to high voltages being pushed through the CPU, causing die issues long term. The best recommendation if you’re going to chase is to update everything BIOS/Microcode/etc and then undervolt the CPU some. Trust me, the small performance hit you may take is going to be a fraction compared to the instability you get.
The only L is if this one is already fried. Intel is supposed to cover them for 5 years, but I don’t know how this shakes out if you weren’t the original buyer. Good luck!

Where are theses return strores? I can’t find one for the life of me near me.

I wish those stores were good

For 10 dollah?
You absolutely test it if you need the PC.
Just keep BIOS up to date…
This is a huge win.

For $10?? SEND IT
Where do they have these said bins? Asking for a friend.

Do you have a microcenter near you? They are great with returns. You could buy a board, see if it posts or not, and then return the board if it doesn’t work.

For $10 you mine as well try. There is really no downside.

Go for it man. It will be a cool project. If it doesnt work out, return new parts while still in return window.
Shouldnt take too long to test whether its a patatoe or not. 0x12B/F microcode, run defaults with some shader compilation from scratch. Repeat that a few times, then run some all core full load.
If that proves stable, undervolt it and be amazed at how misunderstood these chips are.

There has been so much propaganda and fear about these chips that I bet many returned new ones. Even here people don’t get what caused degradation, it was high voltages and intel messed up with i9 turbo profiles resulting 2 cores getting smth like 1.55v to achieve 6ghz on them and it caused rapid degradation (duuuuuuuhh). You can go back to forum posts dated 15 yrs+ and find a lot of talks about someone having cores degraded or IMC. I had IMC degraded slightly on i9 10850k but I ran it at a bit high voltages and tuned ram to the max, I’ve also had i7 5960x’s IMC degraded from 3250mhz to being able to hold 2400mhz stable. But in all these cases it was ME who pushed them beyond of what it could do, but here all the blame shifted on Intel, when previously Asus, Msi and other brands had faulty auto AI profiles which would fry cpus, it all left in forum posts and didn’t spread much but this time they made huge drama out of it. The solution is to lock the cores and disable these useless profiles, its always been like that, but previously such mistakes wouldn’t degrade cpu at such fast speed simply because they were higher NM and less fragile, these days OC is very limited. Smth that simple couldn’t been explained my multi million youtubers, they need to make money from fear, stock movements, yt views etc. I’ve seen so many buying not just one but two high end cpus, one from intel and then one from amd, both companies won, made money out of naive one.
So to answer your question : get a cheap simple z790 board like the one im using z790 PRO-A from Msi, works brilliantly in my system for 2.5 yrs now 24/7, get a simple Air cpu cooler and A-die ram if possible it will allow you to run it at higher speeds and lower timings. Do 2 things in bios when you get it : lock the cores and don’t run it at over 1.24v on cores, you won’t be able to cool it anyway at anything higher and even that i bet would be a challenge

I bought a ryzen 9 5900x for 12 dollars from a binstore by me. looked perfectly fine, this person prolly bought the wrong item and HAD to return it.

You a absolutely try it.
Or you sell it on eBay, as-is, untested.
There really aren’t any other options.
