Came across a comment that stated they only played 6 hours of DS1, didn't like it, watched a recap of the story and are loving Death Stranding 2.

I'm about 30 hours in and everything feels more streamlined & seem to have addressed criticisms of the 1st game.

Too slow? Guns within 2 hours

Story too convoluted? Corpus system with painfully in depth explanations on everything

Unable to take off backpack? Now you can drop and manage it more easily.

Walking sim? Well there's still a lot of walking but that's integral to the gameplay.

Besides, if its anything like DS1 you won't even be touching the ground by the end of it. I started doing foot deliveries in the post-game of DS1 because I started to miss the treks.

I get that not everyone has the time, money or desire to play both & DS2 feels like they made it, in part, for those who didn't like 1.

If DS1 is a slow burn, DS2 is a backdraft.

Oh, and the quokka's don't hurt, either. How is anything that cute even real.

Game: Death Stranding 2

im 10 hours in and already barely touch the ground.

also cleaning out BT zones just feels so nice

  2. It’s a hard sell for me. I like a lot of slow games and I’ve liked kojimbo games historically, but I need max interest to buy games for $80 or what ever these days. Mailman simulator 2: now with more action sounds like something I’d get on sale for $20

  3. LouBarlowsDisease

Wait, they actually have creatures in DS2? I think that was my biggest gripe with DS1. The landscape just seemed too desolate.

  4. pipesnogger

Anyone playing DS2 before DS1 is REALLY missing out imo

  5. Possible_Ad_4094

Honestly, I just can’t get immersed in a game where the main character is a well-known actor. I just feel like it’s never *my character* or *my choices*. I just feel like I’m driving someone else’s character.

100% It’s been streamlined to get people into it fast.

Guns super early; especially non-lethal ones; blood grenades, and large BT battle asap.

Definitely trying to get the general audiences attention right away and honestly it works and I am here for it.

I adore the first one, but I would have been annoyed if I had to play for a ton of time to get some effective non-lethal weapons and stuff for BTs all over again

  7. Im just struggling with whether or not to buy it on my roomates playstation as a PC gamer. The main thing stopping me is I live in the nice chilly fully furnished basement, and they both live upstairs, and both of them individually are messier than me 🙁 I go up one day, empty the sink, and its full the next day. The living room has a path to the couch, and the chair.

I tried so hard to get into the first one. An hour into the second and I’m hooked. Gets you going way faster. I’m glad I watched a story catchup video first though. Might go back to the first one later but not sure

  9. LastTechStanding

I like how the catchers are now not just black goo lol

Unpopular opinion from me. It’s the same with Zelda. I appreciated BOTW a lot. But in my opinion it was an extremely empty game. I don’t care about graphics but the fuzzy grass, shadows… This game just felt off to me, even tho it’s a wonder how open-to-expirment it was

But the 2nd game fixed that, it’s a much better experience in my opinion.

Who’s that cute furry lil guy bottom left? Can you pet?!

  12. Yeah you get a trike, gun, grenades, exo frame, etc like immediately. They’ve streamlined and explained everything very plainly that makes it easy to understand.

BTs felt a bit more abstract in the first game and now they lay out exactly how they function mechanically. (There are watchers, watchers spawn hunters, hunters spawn big BT bosses). There doesn’t seem to be any lethal weapons so you don’t have to worry about killing enemies and causing voidouts.

They give you the solution to problems before it even becomes a problem, letting you bypass or overcome it easily. I haven’t had to walk anywhere since Mexico, I ride the trike everywhere.

The amount of time you spend in areas that are “off network” is very small, so there’s almost always a player made structure that solves an obstacle before I even reach it. There are generators everywhere so I’ve never come close to running out of battery on my vehicles.

The game also has a lot of “go clear out this bandit camp” that was very much not an emphasis in the first game.

I’m still early on I suppose (just met Rainy) so I hope they add some new mechanics that are interesting. I’m enjoying the game, it seems to be a better “video game” for most people, but there’s basically no challenge or anything new that is particularly interesting.

It kinda reminds me of Tears of the Kingdom VS Breath of the Wild.

  13. I have not been able to play yet but this kind of comments arent really encouraging for me. Most of the things you mention are the things that made the first game so special and different to the rest of games. Making It more mainstream might be better for a lot of people, but I’m afraid It could also make the game less special.

The things about the gun in just 2 hours for example. Guns were by far the worst things of the first game, so if they have leaned more into It thats a pretty bad sign for me.

  14. I didn’t like 1 because of how the story was introduced, handcuffing and forcing the main character to do something they were obviously against.

So is this one good to just play after watching a story recap video or something?

I played the first one a few times, but always bounced off after a bit. Don’t have much time coupled with my completionist tendencies meant that I spent tons of time in the first one and wore myself out. I’m so hyped for this one but if I really have to play the first one fully to have a good experience with the second…then I probably just won’t play the second one.

I think what sold me on death stranding 1, was there was a delivery, and I looked up and it was to the top of a gigantic mountain and on the other side of it. I trekked up their with ladders, trying to find footholds wherever I could, ended up in crazy ass BT territory, made it to the other side after like a solid hour and it was quite the journey, and I still remember it because it was kind of wild making that seemingly impossible journey and then looking down from the mountain where I had started, it was awesome.

  17. Captain_Pidgey

As someone who has never played DS1 or seen gameplay, I have absolutely no clue what you do in these games lol

I always see people call them walking sims, but I’ve never seen any other description of what you do in these games…

Maybe I just gotta watch someone playing it 🤷‍♂️

  18. Cricket-JazzMaster19

Yeah, they managed to speed progress in DS2. You get access to stuff a lot faster.

My only complaint on DS2 so far (13hr in) is that deliveries have been really easy. I have yet to get that ‘journey’ feeling of doing a delivery like I had in DS1 many times, deliveries felt lengthy, often difficult and satisfying to finalize. In DS2 I’ve been delivering most stuff by vehicles, rails and the game even let you avoid BT encounters if you route properly. Hopefully there will be something more challenging in the remaining portion of the game.

I am thinking of getting DS1 for my PC , so here’s my question :

If I keep completing the quests , supplying stuff around , will I see some change in the landscape ? Like base being more developed/upgraded something like that ? Also same thing in the outside world

  20. That’s me. Couldn’t get into the first one, tried 3 times. I freaking adore this one. I don’t know what the secret sauce is, I think unlocking a bunch of fun stuff in the first hours helped. What ever it is I’m so happy I gave this one a shot.

  21. ddopTheGreenFox

I’m dumb. I was about to comment something like “what does dark souls 2 have to do the death stranding?”

  22. You just sold me even more on this game. I loved the first so this is great news to me!

  23. papakahn94

You lost me at walking. Idc how good the atmosphere and story is. That shits way too boring for me

  24. Acceptable_Wave9772

redditors when the game have good enviromental design: “WOAH, THIS GAME IS AWESOME!”

  25. I gave up on DS1 after maybe 30 hours. I just can’t imagine buying DS2, knowing that, until I see it on some Steam “Come get it, it’s damned near free” sale.

  26. Masterchiefx343

Is the first game actually worth playing? How long is it?

  27. fidelacchius42

It took me a while to get into the first one, but once I got into it a bit, I started to really enjoy it. To this day, I can’t really explain why I like Death Stranding, I just do.

I am sure once I get to play the second one, I will enjoy it.

  28. THE_GR8_MIKE

People routinely buy the sequel to a game when they didn’t like the first one?

  29. monkey_D_v1199

I’ll feel like an ass if I played DS2 and not ever touch the first game.

  30. Al1Might1

Thanks for the write up. Im huge on Kojima but didnt liked DS1 that much, finished it at 60 hours, but I didnt loved the core gameplay. I’ll probably check 2 later down the line

  31. I freaking loved Death Stranding 1. Can’t wait to play the second when it comes to PC.

  32. Ok-Friendship1635

Tell me though, do vehicles drive better? Or do they still hit a small rock and you get bounced into oblivion? That was only issue with DS1, the vehicles were not great… unless you had roads.

  33. Dr_CrayonEater

Totally agreed. Also, I’d say just it being a sequel and having the experience of playing through 1 helps massively. This franchise is so utterly unique in gameplay, lore, and story that returning to it is so much easier and more comfortable than entering it for the first time.
