Graphics card vendors have started to show off their RTX 5050 models and they’re looking ridiculously huge for such a tiny GPU

AIBs have spent the better part of 20 years convincing gamers that it’s not a “serious” graphics card unless it’s at least two slots wide and has at least two fans. You can’t really sell anything quite like the old EVGA 1060 SC these days, even if the TDP justifies it, so hardly anyone does and prices just keep going up and up and up.

Good? Big cooler means gentle fans means low noise. We’re putting massive towers on our CPUs to cool them quietly and then want GPUs to be slim? Huh? GPUs often use more power and need more cooling than the CPU!

Edit: I can’t believe the same people who nitpick fractions of decibels on CPU coolers are downvoting this lol. Hypocrites or just plain silly?

It reminds me of how Beats would add weights inside their headphones, which gives the illusion of a high quality well built product.

Lose the weights and they suddenly feel like cheap plasticy junk not worth the price beats is charging.

Give those cards the heatsink and fan that are actually required to cool them and people will realize they’re definitely supposed to be 5030 tier cards that should cost much less.

Big cooler helps to fake being a high-performing gaming GPU.

Ah, so that’s where 80% of the 250 usd price tag went: to the coolers.

My 4060ti is a 2 fan and pretty short so wtf

    BiGgEr = BeTtEr

    Low-profile GPUs who???

  8. Randomp0rtalfan

So just reused rtx 5060 coolers which are reused rtx 5060 ti coolers which are reused rtx 5070 coolers which are reused rtx 5070 ti coolers which are reused rtx 5080 coolers which are reused rtx 5090 coolers

  9. Scar1203

It’s probably cheaper to just use the same cooler as a 5060 than to redesign and retool for a smaller cooler just for the 5050.

can we get some single slot cards again please!?

  11. SorryNotReallySorry5

Sorry guys, I’m one of the culprits here. I love me a brick of a GPU. Haven’t bought a GPU without all the gimmicks since Nvidia boxes stopped using those bad ass graphics on their boxes.

There’s a conspiracy that cards are made bigger than they need to make them seem more premium, justifying the cost.

  13. I call it…”the compensator.” The giant fan setup also doubles the price!

  14. Triedfindingname

Is ‘showing off’ now a phrase that appears in close proximity to a 5050?

    Just want to be hip

  15. DougChristiansen

The peacock effect for piss poor GPUs:
Making it look larger than it really is because bigger =better DUHRRR!

  16. Hmasteryz

Man i wish gpu can have same size as nvme ssd with technology innovation that keep their performance, but yeah this all big chungus block of overdesign trend are sucks.

  17. doglywolf

Tiny lol – Haha i remember when the PEAK graphics cards were not any bigger then cell phone

  18. Einn1Tveir2

Where is my modern 75w GPU that does not require a power connector?

  19. spaceshipcommander

My 5090 has 3 fans and they barely run most of the time. The GPU sits at about 63 degrees. These cards could have been much cheaper without the wasted plastic.

  20. Puzzleheaded-Sun453

I don’t see what the issue is here? If you don’t like it don’t buy it, it’s a fairly simple concept to understand. Plus having a bigger cooler in most cases would work out better for you, Who the fuck doesn’t want more efficient cooling, means my card is going last longer or be able to achieve higher clocks when over clocking.

Redditors try and make a big deal out of nothing because MUH HECKING GREEN BAD = challenge impossible.

  21. Efficient-Ocelot-741

If things where normal these cards would be 150 USD since they’re low end entry level cards.
But NOOOOOOooo… they’re going to cost 280 USD minimum.

  22. Well now you dont buy pc cases, but GPU displays so… Now “size matters”

  23. Xanthon

GPUs are one of the few things in tech that doesn’t bother to try to get smaller, instead it’s going the opposite direction.

There has to be a tip over point soon.

  24. userjc247746

I sure hope it runs at a consistent 10°C.

  25. casino_r0yale

They already designed the PCB and heatsink for the high end models they’re not gonna waste any R&D making it smaller lol

  26. KevinMcNally79

That’s too bad. I had an Nvidia 9800 GT that was a single slot card running on whatever the PCI Express slot could provide – no supplemental power connectors. It was made by a company called BFG (no longer in business).
