Stalker 2’s Modding Tools Require 700 GB Of Space

  1. That’s a lot of space for cheeki breeki voice pack mods

  2. anengineerandacat

Guessing because it includes the raw assets? 700GB seems pretty egregious otherwise.

These comments are hilarious, people have no idea what they are talking about lol.

  4. 700gb feels more like they are releasing the source files more than modding tools.

Do y’all want mod tools with uncompressed assets, or do y’all want disk space? Cause you can’t have both

  6. SidewaysGiraffe

It’s even stupider than that- it requires 700 gigs of space “…on your hard drive or SSD”. How much space, I wonder, does it take on “your PC, machine, or computer”?

Gaming journalism has been sorely lacking for quite a long time, but how do you get a job writing for an outlet called “PC Gamer” without knowing what a *hard drive* is? Are they just recruiting random people off the street now?

Yada yada uncompressed assets and all. It seems like this would be a good use case for a repository where you download/extract assets on demand. 700GB is crazy, especially considering most modders will be using a fraction of those files.

Welcome to video game development. If you are serious, that is.

  9. CombatMuffin

99% of users in this sub have never modded or done asset creation in their lives.

If you create media, disk space is always a challenge. Receiving raw asset files and flexibility is far more important than 700gb. Anyone creating media seriously has TBs reserved just for it.

  10. Meh îve installed skyrim mod collection bigger than that.

This has gotta be the most user facing access to a full game engine with its full library of uncompressed resources ever released with a public focus on modding.

  12. Metalmacher

Lol That size makes sense for the full-fledged developer build environment, not a modding tool meant for end-users. Having lossless assets (TIFF, WAV), high poly meshes, debug symbols results in this bloat.

  13. Routine-Duck6896

These are raw ass files bro this is amazing

  14. Kristophigus

When has modding ever needed that level of raw files? It makes things easier, sure, but also harder lol.
“I just want to change the menu music but it’s making me have all the textures, models, animations AND sound on disk at the same time.” No modder works like that lol.

  15. Banana7273

This is insane. Guess Gamma Stalker 2 is just a question of time now

  16. asleeplongtime

this only affects the people creating the mods

which is like less than 1% of 1% of gamers

if you think you care about this, you probably don’t

  17. Crewarookie

Ugh. Look, having access to source libraries of assets is dope, but can we have it as an opt-in, please? To me this just says modding tools cannot work with compressed in-game assets, which is just lazy design for modding tools. C’mon, GSC! And I know there will instantly be people going “don’t criticize them, you know noth…” Yeah, alright. Sure. If you want to think that mandatory 700GB library download for a modding toolset is an okay approach, then I see why we have so many shitty decisions in game dev left right and center. They had no time, they cut corners, now they’re getting praised for cutting corners. Brilliant.

I’ve seen entire UE5 production projects 3rd of that size at near release date. S2 is a big game, but doing this…this is just what I talked about couple days ago: offloading the brunt onto the consumers. “Here’s our entire raw asset library, umm…go make something”.

This ain’t proper modding tools, at least not in a sane way these things have been done for years and years. They might as well have asked people to sign up for their preferred flavor of version checking software, download the project files from their servers and just launch the project in Unreal Editor…why bother!?

  18. RDGtheGreat

Fuck yeah! I can’t wait what kind of stuff people can do with this much resources!

I know they’re gonna start with the only 3 female NPCs in the game tho lol

  19. thekun1va

I love how cool everyone in this thread is 😎😂

  20. sesameseed88

Give it 2 years, well have the most insane mods. Thank you to all the modders ahead of time.

  21. I bought a 1tb ssd just for skyrim modding, this is not a big deal

  22. Potential_Let_6901

We can simulate the universe with that much space
