  1. I remember the day very clearly. I bought Ghost Recon as my first Live game. It was so badass to be able to play online on a console.

  2. I still have a two month card that came with my copy of Halo 2

  3. Man, I was in the beta test for this. I remember they included a t-shirt with the beta starter kit that said “I’ve got great hands”.

First online game I played was Moto GP. Over took couple of players then heard a French accent voice saying “ Ooh La La”

I was in the hospital when my kit arrived. All I wanted to do was play unreal championship. I was already dogwalking almost anyone on halo 1 on xbconnect.

  6. Mountain_Dandy

This was that sweet moment you connected with others of like mind without having to physically be present.

    This takes me back

  7. Bananas how Xbox was the only games platform charging for online play for nearly a decade (correct me if I’m wrong).

  8. FlamingGnats

Pretty sure they have their own versions of this.

  9. I am 33 and don’t know either because I had a gaming PC when this came out.

    EDIT: missed “PC” lol

  10. MechAssault was my JAM.

Never even finished the campaign, that game was kinda tough for little kid me.

They also don’t know how many twist ties it took to hold the headset together once the earpiece broke off the headband lol

  12. Odd_Thing1768

Hell yea man , it was a game changer for sure

HOLY FUCK… Bro just unlocked a core memory and sent me through an insane flashback of being 12 years old getting an Xbox for Xmas,a copy of halo 2 with it and then the next day my grandma took me to EB games and got me Xbox live and mic.. this gonna make me sound soft but this shit made me tear up just now. My grandma would buy all my video games as a kid,she wasn’t a gamer at all but she understood my passion for video games and supported it fully and would spoil me since I’m an only child and lived with her. She bought me my first PS2,GameCube,Xbox,Xbox 360 and then I lost that sweet angel of a woman to cancer in 2013.. She died the year I was graduating HS. RIP GRANDMA♥️ LLJV🕊️🕊️

OP thank you so much for posting this picture and letting me feel like a child again for a few minutes ♥️

Some of my fondest memories are playing Halo 2 multiplayer on Xbox Live. I had a clan and the last game we all played together was Destiny 2. I sometimes wonder what they’re up to now.

  15. barcham22

I bought an Xbox solely because it was the only system that had online play for Capcom vs SNK 2. It was amazing at the time.

  16. darkzapper

I remember getting this. Forgot how I got mech assault. This is it lol. Memories unlocked. Golden age of gaming.

  17. Blighted-Spire63

Trying to remember the first game I actually played online, I’m pretty sure it was just world of Warcraft

For consoles/xbox it might’ve been Resident Evil 5 actually

  18. joe102938

Mechassault was a fucking awesome game. Miss that game.

  19. This plus Counter Strike was the beginning of the end for me.

  20. Diacetyl-Morphin

Different generations, different memories. But the nostalgia remains the same. For me, i started in the 90’s with online-gaming on pc, with the dial-up modems. We had titles like DOOM, Unreal Tournament, Quake 3 Arena, Counter Strike etc.

  21. ScoobiesSnacks

Xbox was such a pioneer when it came to online gaming for consoles.

  22. Man I got a few 1 months free trials banned from halo 2 match making for modding… I miss the good ole days.

  23. trogdor2594

I remember having the demo disc for Xbox that had sega gt on it, watching the ad for Xbox live so many times being jealous of the people playing MechAssault. Living in the countryside sucked at that time.

  24. Nauh, X-Band for the SNES was top tier for its era.

  25. MartyHofFYT

I got this and never used it. I found out you have pay after you started
    I don’t like being teased

  26. Clemenx00

Nah fuck Xbox for normalizing paying for online. I don’t care whatever features they introduced. Not worth it.

PS3 online remains the best ever.

A girl i had crushed on for literal years invited me to the movies, just me and her in maybe 9th or 10th grade, one of the Harry Potter movies was in theaters. I turned her down last minute because that was the day I first got xbox live to work. I lived in a tiny town we just didn’t have internet for a long time, when we finally got internet it was locked to the family computers mac address by the modem, but I learned to switch my Xbox 360 Mac address to clone my computers.

I chose gears of war over her. 10/10 would choose again.

  28. Phantasy Star Online and Counter Strike while listening to linkin park that I uploaded to the Xbox so I could rock out while gaming. Pure hype. My mom actually worked for Microsoft and I got to buy games they developed for $20. Like Fusion Frenzy and Blinx(which desperately needs a comeback.) I also got to test Halo 2’s online multiplayer.

  29. Temporary-Back4248

I remember playing ghost recon on ranked matches as a lone wolf loadout, and some guy got so pissed off that I kept killing him over and over, he told me he was gonna take me to McDonald’s buy me a happy meal and then shit in it and make it unhappy meal. Good times.

  30. Blighted-Spire63

I Totally forgot about RuneScape but 100% feel you on that gaming lounge conundrum

  31. Substantial__Unit

That brings back memories. Ghost Recon lobbies was my top 3 all time online gaming moments.

  32. The start of PAID ONLINE CONNECTION SERVICE. Thanks Microsoft……

  33. Antique-Pin-4674

Dude it blew my little 13 year old mind away!

  34. I had the transparent green Halo 2 branded Plantronics headset. That thing was awesome and lasted forever. Halo 2 on Xbox live was an absolute game changer

  35. FlameStaag

I was a casual gamer until I bought Halo 2 and Xbox live with my paper delivery money
