I am shocked. Flabbergasted. Who ever could have predicted this.

  2. Delgadude

Whoever led this project is incredibly incompetent to fail like this even with Riot funding.

  3. EaterOfLemon

    Never heard of it.

Turns out its a game by some people that ran a Minecraft server.

  4. Radingod123

Wow. I truly believed this game would end up a better Minecraft, and really it looked like it had the bones to do it. Especially with Riot backing them.

Edit: I don’t care about your opinions saying they had no chance. For a minute there, they definitely did.

  5. I have no clue what this is but all I had to read was in production since 2015 and funded by Riot since 2020. Must have been the next Grand Theft Auto with that timeline.

So they get Tencent Money then shut down.

I have to wonder why it’s so hard to make “Minecraft 2”. I know we had the “Minecraft Clone” gold rush when it was starting to get big, but it’s been long enough that it’s time for someone to do with the right *priorities*.

It feels like they all try too hard with making it also a big action-RPG when I just want a Voxel Miner-Crafter with easier mod support and free of Microsoft.

I think the biggest trap are devs who think they can make “Minecraft with Terraria’s Boss Rush Content” and I say STOP!

Just…make a Voxel Miner sandbox with simple baddies that spawn in darkness. Make your Terraria Boss Rush an optional Expansion down the line.

    That’s a bummer, but I guess I can’t say I’m surprised.

  8. Beta_Codex

LOL I was still in elementary school when I heard about this game. Now I’m an adult and employed this game is still not released??? And now it’s cancelled? What a surprise.

  9. Theycallmedub2

I remember hearing about it and thinking “why would anybody be interested in this when Minecraft servers already exist?” Turns out I was right

  10. calaveracavalera

Was hyped for this game like 10 years ago. I’ve completely forgotten it was a thing lmao

  11. Deliriousious

If I had a nickel for every time someone was going to make a voxel block game but gave up… I’d have about 3 nickels.

  12. Complainer_Official

oh no. well, I guess post your code to github so the community can finish it for you.

Fuck I wish that was still a thing. even modders have fallen to the monster that is capitalism.

  13. 3WayIntersection

Yeah, saw this coming a mile off. Couldn’t really figure it out at the time, i was too young, but even when it was revealed i think i could tell that it was overambitious.

It really just felt like the hypixel guys wanted to make their own minecraft with blackjack and hookers. No real passion for making something of their own, they just wanted full control over whatever they already have with minecraft.

  14. TehDragonGuy

On the one hand, I’m gutted. For so many years I was so excited for this game.

On the other, how did it take so long to reach this point? Feels like this has been in development for an enternity now. I completely forgot about it until I saw this post.

  15. RandomRedditUser31

I remember the initial hype for this being crazy

  16. Dopa-Down_Syndrome

From the wiki so there’s context.

    >Production began in 2015 by developers from the Minecraft multiplayer server Hypixel with funding from Riot Games, who later bought the studio in 2020. It was scheduled to release for Windows and macOS as well as consoles and mobile devices.

  17. Complete-Alfalfa7439

Not surprised but deeply disappointing. I wished it worked out but i lost the hopium when there were those big hiatus in 2022-2023. To fail such a big project with Riot at your back, man… Completely incredible there wasn’t even an open alpha or early access.

Still wish to all current members of the team good luck to carry on.

  18. SandboxSurvivalist

This is disappointing, but not unexpected. The game has been in development hell for years.

  19. BananaSupremeMaster

Turns out the real Hytale was the friends we made along the way

… Or more realistically, Vintage Story

  20. I hope they release what they had of it. I mean it wont hurt either.

  21. Smart_Main6779

what, that must be like millions down the drain for not even a public beta.. 8 years of development & devlogs for what ???

  22. shining_force_2

All the Covid investment in the games industry has run out. Given the state of the world there is little to no investment- where it used to be plentiful. Many studios with no products out will shutter over the next 6 months. There’s just no investment.

  23. sonicfonico

Lmao i remeber having a classmate always sayng that this was going to be better than Minecraft, just you wait

    Well

  24. CyborgTiger

Pouring one out for the hypixel minecraft days of my youth 🍻

  25. CowboyWoody37

That is super frustrating. Fuck heads should have just released what they had instead of going with riot and trying to go big and cross play.
Hytale could have started just like Minecraft, slowly and growing with the community. Instead they teased the fuck out of us, reworking everything they worked on already had just to drop the ball.
I was sure we were close to a release or date with what they told us.
Very unfortunate to see all that work go to the trash.
I was ready for a Minecraft replacement and unfortunately we will never have one.

Honorable mention, Vintage Story. It’s hard but it’s good.

  26. SuperSyrias

The funny thing is that the game could have been great and succeeded in “improving on minecrafts concept”.
The problem came when big money came in and the scope of “what we can do with that budget” exploded wildly to then get “but now we want you to…”-ed by riot until almost every aspect of the prior ideas and concepts got cut away in favor of “going multiplatform” and such.
Had they stayed “small”, had they went public alpha, public beta, early access instead of no communication but more features more more more…. could have been a great game with a killer community.

  27. Game was in development for 7 years, had mega funding from Riot Games, and a reveal trailer with 61 million views. They had everything going for them- how they fumbled this I wont understand. What were they doing….

  28. Up_in_the_Sky

Damn I remember watching the original trailer.

“Just building” isn’t an interest of mine. I want to build because you have to in order to survive, not to just be creative. A block world like survival game would be fun.

The bossing and PvP mini games looked like it would be a good time. I was hoping it would be something like dark and darker crossed with minecraft. And the custom games akin to something like halo 3 forge and custom maps/game modes.

    A shame.

  29. Derpykins666

Saw this coming miles away – there was more hype for the game like 8 years ago when they released some trailers for it. It was going to be a Minecraft-like clone, but there seemed to be a lot more focus on combat/bosses/gear, which seemed honestly like a good idea because that’s what I STILL think Minecraft lacks minus modding. But it basically disappeared off the face of the planet the past 5-6 years without any new gameplay/trailers or updates as far as I knew. Sad cause it didn’t look that bad based on what we DID see, but this is fairly easily the predicted outcome.

Still seems a bit wild to me though, because you’d think a voxel based game would be a bit easier for a small dev team to handle, but the voxel game curse has struck again, just like Cube World, but at least that game “came out” even if the game was a disaster on launch. They clearly bit off way more than they could chew/handle or just lost interest in dev-ing the game completely.
