First time updating BIOS and it’s scary.

Been building computers since I was 15 and I’m 45 now and in all those years I have never had a single bios fail to update or fail to boot because of a failed update. You’ll be fine.

I’ve updated mine 3-4 times now without any issues at all.

If you turn it off it finishes immediately 👍

Don’t worry, it will always be scary

My laptop turned into a jet engine for a BIOS update. You’ll be fine.

I’m new to PC building so don’t yell at me but why update bios? What exactly is happening and why’s it scary?

You know, after all these years I’m still surprised as to why bios updating is such a risky procedure. You’d think motherboard manufacturers would have solved that a long time ago already (yeah, some did with dual bios but not all)

Update: It went well and the ass clenching stopped.

These fancy UI makes it way better than what it was.

Now if you’ll excuse me I have a cloud to yell at and knees to be hurt.

The best part is when you blink during the last five percent and then it finishes when your eyes are closed and the screen is black and you wonder if it lost power at the last minute

My biggest advice is dont do it on super hot days or during thunderstorms when power has a chance to go out

I’ve had one fail. Fortunately it was at a time when you could swap out the bios chip circa 2000 and was able to get back up and running for like $15

Dual bios of bios flashback fixes this. I suppose its not available on every board however I make sure my mobo is equipped with one of them probably the latter.

I was scared too when I thought it was a video and it was stuck on 28%

    First time’s always the scariest.

As you get used to it, you’ll be like from *Oh gee, this is so nerve-wracking what if this happens and everything went south…* to *A thunderstorm while the update is at 50%? Guess I’ll go get a UPS the next day…*

Going back, just be sure that the plugs are plugged nicely and there are no outages for the next hour and you’ll be okay.

It’s the one part of computer building I dislike doing. Don’t do it often but enough to give me anxiety until it boots up again.

Never not scary, but with bios flashback being a feature that shows up on more and more motherboards, it helps making it less scary.

I had one bios update fail and it bricked the computer. One time. The fear is real now.

If you have a motherboard with a BIOS flashback, knowing that option exists even if you don’t use it will help with the BIOS update anxiety.

This hasn’t been a real concern for quite a while now. Modern mobos come with one *or more* backup batteries specifically for this reason.

Id have to physically beat the hell out of my motherboard to get it to a point where it would die on a shoddy bios update.

Is a mobo actually permanently fucked if an update fails? (Assuming no flashback or 2nd bios features etc)

  22. RecoilS14

I’ve built dozens of PCs and I’ve never updated a BIOS.

Fun bit of advice people often overlook: be sure to plug this into the battery section of a battery backup when doing BIOS updates. Just because there haven’t been many electrical issues in your area, that doesn’t mean someone couldn’t crash into a transformer or have a brown out happen in your area. If that does happen, your motherboard is toast. With it in the battery section, the UPS will do it’s job and hopefully keep the PC running long enough for the process to finish, saving you a lot of money and frustration.
