I still think it’s dumb from a viewership/engagement perspective to have everyone tap out before playoffs. The old system group play was largely a “did you buy a pass and fill in the Pickems and finalize them before play begins” check, with a few people getting screwed by upsets. Playoffs was the real diamond coin filter where you had to pick the team to win the major before quarterfinals started. The logic was if you got eliminated in the quarterfinals you’d still watch the sf and gf because they’re more exciting than group play.
I didn’t buy a pass this year because I was still waffling on whether I wanted to pay for something I don’t enjoy and thought the major started a few days later than it did. It’s really not fun putting more than 10 seconds of thought into picks when random picks is the best strategy for diamond.
