Where the Cat and Wolf play is one of my favorite quests in the Witcher 3. I've gone back and forth over it over the years. I've seen both outcomes in multiple playthroughs but my first one, I decided to kill him, so thats my personal canon.

If he'd have just slaughtered those that tried to kill him, Id have spared him, but he didn't
An out of control Witcher can be just as deadly as any monster in my view.

On the other hand they did try to murder him in cold blood, so…

I love the moral ambiguity of Witcher 3 quests.

They didn’t just try to murder him in cold blood, they got him to do their dirty work first with no intention of ever paying him and *then* they tried to kill him for insisting that they give him what he was owed.

I’m on the “let him go” side.

Gaetan was dealt a bad hand in life, made into a Witcher of the most violent school. Then when he is just trying to do his business, some hicks try to kill him to save some coin.

He killed some innocent people, yes, but he is basically a soldier that had a PTSD flare up. He doesn’t deserve to die and does regret some of what he did. We can only hope that he gets a peaceful life from now on.

I didn’t fight him because Witcher 2’s combat traumatized me so much.

  4. Opunaesala

Always seemed pretty clear cut to me. Defending himself is one thing, killing nearly everyone else is another.

  5. I let him go I find that to be the moral choice killing him would be wrong because he defended himself and took out a village where I doubt any would be a good person

  6. He’s unhinged, and its all but confirmed that this was not his first killing spree. He has to die

I killed him and to this day don’t regret it in the slightest. He killed innocent people in a blind rage. Millie couldn’t have been the only child in the village. She’s just the only one who managed to hide. I’d rather kill him to prevent the possibility of him killing more innocent people in a blind rage, because Witchers getting ripped off isn’t uncommon and it WILL happen again. What happened to him is shitty, but killing people who had nothing to do with it while they’re running away immediately makes his actions unforgivable for me. He lost the plot and went too far. Good riddance.

  8. Just saying, he’s got a nice sword in his hidden stash 😀

    I kill him.

But I also RP Geralt. And I believe he sees that the primary thing separating a Witcher (mutated human) from a monster is their code.

Once they break that code. Or lose themselves. They’re essentially no different than what they’re created to kill.

Keep in mind, in the books there are few monsters. But they’re deadly. They aren’t wandering the wilds in dozens to kill for XP. Every hunt and kill requires preparation and/or some sort of loss comes from
It. The fights are fairly impactful. So Witcher’s were originally even more utility than an in the game.

Edit: corrected some context. I’m on mobile and this was hard for myself to read.

This was an awesome quest, but him slaughtering the whole village took a lot of difficulty out of the choice. It would’ve been a much more interesting decision if he’d only went on a limited rampage against the men of the village for instance.

Gaetan is murderous piece of shit. If someone tries to kill you, you don’t slaughter everyone that happens to live in his area code as a response.

The only thing that saved that little girl, was the coincidental similarity in features to his sister.

Gerald even explicitly said that Gaetan likely has gone on killings sprees of the innocent before this.

Oh hey, totally organic posts starting to put up to build hype for the new dlc and Witcher 4!

I remember him being a psycho that clearly find pleasure in killing.

Geraldo the man would not leave it be.

  14. I still wonder if I made the right choice between Yen and Triss.

I didn’t just kill the men, but the women and children, too! I hate them!

    Bro had strong Anakin vibes.

  16. BoozerBean

It’s really a total win-win situation when you think about it. You avenged the village and also thinned Geralt’s competition. Less Witchers = more work availibility

  17. Spare him just because kmets had it coming. Sure they might not have participated in the assassination attempt directly. But what would they have done if they had learned that the elder had killed Gaetan? Would they have reported to the baron? Would they have sought justice?

Naaah. This ignorant cowardly lot who only cares about themselves would have buried him at best, or, realistically, they would have thrown him in some pit or fed him to the pigs. Moreover, Gaetan saved and will save many more lives than he killed that day.

It was self defense. Clear as day.

The rest is just empty accusations with no proof.

Why am I not surprised Redditors go with “guilty until proven innocent”.

  19. I spared him, “sometimes heads just roll” said the Butcher of Blaviken

  20. Killpower78

It’s easy for me to pass death sentence as while I do understand why he killed those who tried to murder him but taking it all out on village…nah it makes him no better than monsters that witchers are supposed to protect humanity from.

If witchers are seen to side with him, it’ll start massive witch hunts to wipe them out so for sake of all decent witchers that he had to die by witcher’s hands so humanity knows that they can police themselves to keep them safe.

  21. DexterousEnd

I always let him live. To put it in perspective, if the villagers had everything go their way, they would have mobbed and killed Gaeran and dumped his body out back, and for all we know Geralt could be next. The loss of a tiny village of people who would actively fuck over and then kill someone helping them is no true loss. Velen isn’t exactly full of good people.

  22. Fine I’ll say it. That’s a sick image, just a very nice capture.

  23. i’m currently on my 13th playthrough. so far i let him live in 12 out of 12 playthroughs and i don’t plan to make this the first time i don’t

that said, i still found a quest i had never done before on this playthrough. it is absolutely insane how much content this game has to offer

  24. FunkMeSlideways

I believe the whole village was supportive, if not privy to this decision. I let the guy live. He got stabbed in the back after trying to be charitable to people he risked his life for. AVAB. All villagers are bastards.

  25. xCHEAPxSHOTx

I send him on his way. He’s a fellow Witcher, and after all, Geralt is the Butcher of Blavekin.
