Expedition 33 was also around 720p (probably more like 800ish-p if I recall) for Series X in performance mode. This is just how things are now (i.e. blurry).

Lmfao feel bad for everyone that bought it 😭
Sirvan1c
I’ve only played it for an hour but I noticed some crazy frame drops during cutscenes. Like it’s fine then it drops to 5 fps for a second then back to fine. Very jarring.
Trever09
performance mode on PS5 also locks to 720p to achieve 60fps in combat encounters.
Terrible optimisation seems to be a theme throughout FF’s history

Just like on PS5.

I played the demo and it looked fine to me. People need to accept that we are moving beyond native pixel counts due to good upscaling and reconstruction methods.
Did it look super crisp? No. But it looked mostly fine and I would have never guessed that the native pixel count is that low.
Just a shame they haven’t fixed the occasional cutscene stutter that is there since the original release I think (I know pc players can fix it via a mod)
No_Friendship_4158
The performance standards are absolutely too low for the year 2025. No one in 2010 thought you would have to run 720p in 2025 for you to be able to play a game with 60fps.
_lefthook
I think this was the first title to make me go quality mode on my ps5. Always preferred performance mode but ff16 was soooo unoptimised.
I’m still salty about it

While it’s good that consoles have options this gen (typically anyway) for 60 FPS or better graphics at 30 FPS, it’s a bit annoying that resolutions have dropped so low while upscalers have been used so aggressively. Dropping the game to a dismally low resolution or leaning heavily on an A.I. upscaler is *not* good optimization.
pookachu83
Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t it an upscale 720p? Like the internal resolution is 720p upscaled to 1080/1440p dynamically, depending on what’s happening on screen?
Jeff1N
PS5 only ever lock to 60fps in battles, when the resolution is fixed at 720p.
It would have helped if Square replaced FSR1 with FSR3, but I doubt they could achieve true 60fps without dropping the native resolution to 720p
Possible-Emu-2913
Just play in quality mode. I did for 200 hours on PS5 and it was worth it.
firewire_9000
Welcome back to 2005 I guess. That’s pathetic.
chinchindayo
Crazy how we made no progress since 2006 when PS3/XB360 came out with 720p/1080p games. Yeah most ran at 720p native back then but a few even 1080p native.
atko850
Is the demo representative? May give it a whirl to see if I can hack it with either, normally a performance mode, but Immortals of Aveum was unacceptable and Jedi Survivor was also awful until they fixed it
Bl00dEagles
The game was a bag of shit performance wise on ps5 too.
CrotasScrota84
Can’t wait for the PS6 Remaster in 1080P
Rex__Lapis
4k OLED TV to Play in 720p lmao fuck this Timeline
Just-Pudding4554
I know this should be a hate headlinr but honestly i prefer 60fps over even 4k. I cant stand 30fps anymore.
So its a good thing we have an option for 30fps better resolution or 60fps low resolution.
That said….FFXVI Runs horrible on ps5 too. It was not steady 60fps.
grimoireviper
Pretty sure the PS5 version had all the same issues.
literious
And yet people believe clowns from CDPR who claim Witcher 4 will target 60 fps on Xbox lol.
solamarpreet
Thats the state of Japanese game development these days.
DreamEaglr
Game looks worse than many ps4 games. Total garbage
Scorpio989
This game regularly dropped below 30 fps when I played it on PS5. The combat was literally non-stop FX.
PlasticSynth
The pc performance is also trash. The game is no where near good enough to put up with all the performance problems.
FieryPhoenix7
Based on the demo the quality mode is the way to go.
ThisOneTimeAtLolCamp
Super bloated file sizes, games running like total ass, graphics not looking hot at all…
This generation has been so fucking terrible from the tech side of things. The most powerful we’ve ever had and it’s been a constant disaster. What the fuck actually happened?
bighorse83
Series X is starting to show its age.
EchoBay
Funny how the consoles get more powerful but the visuals and performance for a lot of games stay the same.
I don’t have any way of proving this, but could one generally say that console exclusives run better than multi platform ones?
CypherRen
Are we really surprised that a Square enix game isn’t optimised
WickedHero69
I dont know why its so low fps, the graphic and gameplay wise not mindblowing
Apprehensive_Map64
My laptop with a 16gb 3080 is normally enough for most games but FF16 was a stutter fest for the first seventy hours even on 1080p until I installed the cpu fix mod and then had zero problems even in 4k. Definitely learned a lesson to check for mods. The game was broken on PC so I bet it’s broken on Xbox too
MattTheGoodSir
I’ve heard that it’s more stable in quality mode than performance mode 😬
darkdeath174
And graphics mode has stuff that is lower quality than ps5.
