Hello everyone, I was recently gifted this pc, want to make sure everything works correctly (It boots and works without these cables but I was wondering if they could add something) anyone has any idea what are they for? And where do they go? (The person that gifted me this pc doesn’t know anything about pcs either so I can’t ask) I appreciate all the help

Pci power connectors, they go into a GPU that requires power directly from the power supply, doesn’t look like your gpu draws that much power.

  2. BigE1263

External power for a much more power GPU. Current card doesn’t need it so it’s kind of redundant

  3. It’s a power connector for devices that require additional power. Most commonly GPUs. The one you have installed doesn’t need one, hence the loose cable.

  4. okepimalin

This is the power cable for graphic cards that needs it.

this are power cables for bigger gpus (graphics processing unit, or graphics accelerators). rn you have not much more than a display adapter (the small card at a right angle to the motherboard is your gpu), that gpu is not really good for gaming, but if you’re not doing that and only need a lotta cpu performance this can be a config that makes sense.

what are you planning to use it for?

  6. It plugged into the graphics card that is no longer there

The 8-pin commector labeled “pci-e”? Thats a power cable for a high powered accessory that goes in one of the two open rails in the bottom.
99.9% of the time thats a video card which helps render graphics for video games or sometimes does math for AI training and video production. My bet is this system used to have a nicer video card and the owner pulled the card before selling it.

Notice also how two of the black mesh panels that would normally block off the unused rear expansion ports are open. There used to be cards installed there that were removed.

Have people regressed so far now that Google isn’t worth using anymore? Seriously, this could have been solved in 10 seconds with a Google search. WTF happened to basic problem solving?

Your homie gifted it to you but didn’t bother telling you its got the equivalent of an all dressed ruffle chip for a gpu?
Get a decent gpu up in this bitch and it might be decent. The mobo and ram aren’t super cheap so im assuming the cpu aint half bad

Ok I see that the question has been answered. So I’m here now to satisfy my curiosity.

The case and choice of components seems like a desktop one would build/buy as a gaming system or at least as a system that is built by someone who knows about these stuff. Additionally from the looks of it it used to have a beefier GPU and someone replaced it with this pathetic excuse of one.

The question now stands as to who, how come the person who gift it to you for it in their posetion? Was it one of the cases but entire machine to just get the GPU at MSRP?

I think it’s time I delete this app.

Looks like you were gifted someone’s pc after they switched to a different motherboard/cpu combo, but kept the gpu and gave you the gpu from their 2006 rig that resides in their closet.

So unfortunately the PC you’ve been gifted had a GPU that needed the PCIE supplemental power but they changed it to one that works solely off of the 75Watts of the slot, which means it could be a 750Ti, GTX 1050 or 1050Ti

This is a prebuilt pc. I have the same one. Its a cyberware cpu. Radeon insides. I bought the most up to date pc. And my came with those cables unused and tied off as well. Nothing is missing. He bought a lower end pc build and basically the next graphics cost about as much a whole nother unit.

You actually have a pretty nice motherboard and cooler. Statistically speaking people who put a huge 360 AIO cooler with a motherboard like that will also put a good CPU and power supply. The case, an Inwin 303 is also a very nice and thicc case. Most likely the original owner just took out the GPU (your thin vertical thing) and replant with something he wouldn’t mind parting with. My question is, does it work? You can probably get away with just buying a new GPU or worst case use this computer as a practice computer.

I asked myself this same question 2 years ago and paid $100 for a thumbtack geek to come over and plug it into my Graphics card in .5 seconds 🥲

What’s with that shriveled card you have there?

Also slowly and carefully take the fans off the cooler radiator and take the radiator and blow it off with compressed air (no vacuum, too much static), it’s pretty dirty and will affect your cooling. It’s also a good way to get to know your parts and how a pc goes together.

Its for GPUs too powerful to run solely off board power. You can leave it dangle there unless it will get caught in fans. It will save you time if you ever decide to get a gpu upgrade. Or you can remove it or tuck it behind the Mobo if you want a clean look

In addition to what others have posted, I thought I’d mention that PC power supplies (PSU) usually have more connectors than you need, to account for different builds requiring different connectors. It is perfectly normal to have wires not connected to anything. Sometimes the PSU will have “modular” cables that can be disconnected on the PSU end for a cleaner look. If you do have modular cables you can disconnect them, but make sure you label them with the PSU they came from because they might not be compatible with other PSUs, even if the connectors are the same.

You have a decent base which will be fine for most schoolwork and a modest video card will let you play games too.

That GPU…No way, I paired that exact one with a Core 2 Machine I upgraded a year ago, that must be a 1GB DDR3 AMD Radeon HD6450, severely lacking in any graphics output meant to be an adapter to power PCS that lack integrated graphics, the drivers are nearly a decade old from when it last received updates, if you got money to spare, even a GTX 1050Ti is X10 better than this GPU as it even bottlenecked my Core 2 Quad that was made in 2008! It list the bottleneck as soon as I paired it even with a old GTX 550Ti

Looking at your specs, this GPU is not helping at all, I’d recommend a GTX 1660 as they’ve become dirt cheap but still pack a punch by miles ahead, I game on the “S” version too 👍🏼

  23. Bananaland_Man

Looks like they took the gpu out and replaced it with a cheap one that works.

  24. TraditionalMetal1836

That’s pretty hilarious. That CPU cooler likely cost more then the included GPU.

It would appear you are also missing at least 3 of your motherboard standoff screws from what I can see. Around the edge of the board there are silver dots in a circle, should be mounting screws in them to secure the board to the case.

  26. stropaganda

I would grab a good bang for the buck gpu used and pop it in. A used 6700 XT or 6800 XT would fit right at home.

  27. sagarpanchal01

What a mess. Clean the cables, you’ll find tutorials or tricks online.

And they removed the GPU before gifting?

  28. Your friend has given you a pc and put a basic GPU in there to ensure that the pc will run as your CPU 5800x (great CPU) doesn’t have integrated graphics, which means that the pc will run but no display will show up.

Most, and pretty much all high end CPUs require a GPU to function. So don’t worry there.

If you’re wanting to game then investing in a GPU is your next course of action. 5070 or a 9070xt are great options for a mid to high end price point. (Ignore all the weebs who say you need a 2k GPU)

Anyways, those cables are power cables that will plug into a graphics card.

    Enjoy your new pc!
    Welcome to the pcmr.

  29. slightlyassholic

Dude! I can’t see for sure but that looks like a decent rig. Did someone upgrade and give you their old one? If so there is a very good chance they pulled the original graphics card and put it in their new system then put “something” in there just cause.

That thing looks like it has real potential. Run Speccy and let us know what’s in there.
