I enjoy the nuance in Ultimis Nikolai seemingly hating his wife, since most of her echoes are either insulted or feared. But then, in Gorod Krovi, Primis Nikolai drops the bombshell (not that it’s surprising, but besides the point) that Ultimis’ alcohol addiction came from losing her. He loved her more than anything. It’s also a nice representation of how alcohol can completely twist your worldview, causing you to push away, attack, and insult those dearest to you.
