I fell in love with the old, Waw zombies, and kept down the road through to bo6, and honestly idk where it happened, maybe zombies chronicles, but at some point it just started feeling hollow. They gave the players too much. The gobble gums ruin Bo3, cold war is fun but mindless, Bo6 is even more lacking in that nameless quality that made WaW-bo2 so magical. I want that feeling of trying desperately to survive and having the means to grow, not this mindless killing until I get bored and exfil. I don't even hate the new features and style, I think parts of it would be needed for the perfect zombies experience, but we're just so far removed from the magic, the uniqueness of maps and mechanics, the desperation. Maybe it's me? Maybe I've gotten too accustomed to things for it to be surprising. Maybe it's both? Maybe the mode has become too formulaic? I honestly can't put my finger on what's been lost, and it was lost slowly over time through evolution. Does anyone else feel this way? Is there any hope to recapture this feeling, or should I just let go of the mode?

“Is there any hope to recapture the feeling of “old” Zombies?” No. Never going to happen. Not that its a bad thing because we have the old zombies to go and have fun on when we want to, but its just something you cant remake. You cant remake the feeling of linking up with 3 randoms on origins and doing the EE at 1 am…. that feeling is just not able to be forced.
GAMEPLAY WISE, MAYBE. There were always rumors of a classic mode, if that comes in bo7… then perhaps the new maps plus that drawback to “classic” mechanics could be interesting!
Sadly my friend, this is growth and aging. You’re not the target audience anymore. Releasing a zombies mode like the old games would be panned for being so lackluster and barebones. The new generation of players would complain it’s to basic and difficult.
Yeah, it’s called playing the old games.
Old zombies died with the release of Origins , it was something completely new that would redefine what zombies would be until Die Machine in Cold War was released. But if you mean like actual Classic Zombies, it started to slowly shift away between COTD and Shang, that was the first time we really started to move away from the classic survival mode feel and started to head the way of the Easter Egg
Yes get a glass screen old tv and plug your 360 into it and play the maps off the waw disc
They can release the most classic feeling zombies game ever tomorrow and you won’t get that feeling
They need to create darker, more horror inspired maps that are genuinely creepy. Make them much more simple and not shove the Easter egg down your throat like many maps in BO3 forward did.
An Easter Egg should be something discovered, also remove the upgrade bullshit and let all upgrades be able to be done in game. Also make zombies harder, Cold War and BO6 are comically easy while World at War is a big deal for getting round 10.
It could definitely be done again, it just hasn’t been.
It’s wild how people don’t take into account how important establishing an atmosphere and sound design takes into building an environment old zombies captured. It’s always straight to nostalgia goggles.
The gameplay is no longer a build up, it’s thrown in your face immediately. The world no longer feels alive , due to a non existent ambience, and they’ve ADHD’d the game up a ton. It’s not nostalgia, it’s soul being sucked out. We aint getting that old zombies back dude.
No 0 chance at all you can never recreate that if it’s easy and we haven’t had a hard zombies since bo2
I made a mod that uncensors the game here-https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3493485543&tscn=1749438827 I just released it friday ive tried to tell ppl on here but the mods keep taking my post down.
the closest you can get to a new age game that almost captures the same atmosphere is CoD WW2
None whatsoever
It’s all this dark ether shit. It’s purple crystals and jelly fish. That’s not scary. Something about a broken building in a grey sky. There was history you could feel it. You didn’t want to be there. I think truly after BO4 that was gone completely. I think BO4 maps had it but they added so much shine that it made maps like dead of night or the titanic map feel less scary.
One word , no
yes u can get the old feeling back. buy a 15 year old cod game for 60$
and for the bo3 gobblegum part there is literally something called FREE WILL you dont have to pick up that perk a holic you spinned if u dont like em dont use em. do u want 2 hit system back on bo3? just install a mod. and no new zombies wont be like old unless they really need money and pull a fortnite by launching ZOMBIES OG
Not a chance
Not in cod zombies. OG cod zombies began as a fun passion project made by devs who had the ability to use their unfiltered creativity for this game. There will always be game devs who are passionate about their games and have the freedom to build something fun and unique. COD zombies had its turn in 2008 but its been done for a minute now.
you were a kid and now you’re an adult. so no, you can’t. you’re fundamentally different now
Yes. You can’t recapture the exact same magic but I think people are forgetting that the core of the game mode constantly changed for reasons that didn’t put continuity first. Like the shift from Zelinksi’s 115-only time paradox to Blundell’s apothicons and keepers. There can absolutely be new magic by also following the same design of derelict, atmospheric maps with detailed but subtle storytelling of old conspiracy theories and a focus on a fun and simple gameplay loop with mysteries that are hidden well. Why not just follow the same or similar principles of WAW and BO1 with a fresh take for modern times? People can enjoy the new games all they want but they will forever feel divorced from their origin and alien to me and suffer too much from the negatives of the gaming industry for me to personally enjoy.
I completely agree that gobblegums suck. They’re just an excuse to nickle and dime the user. However if they were to release a map with an identical feature set to the OG maps, they’d get roasted to all hell by the userbase these days.
bo1 kino is scary as fuck with its dark colours
bo3 kino I don’t feel anything
No. Because the feeling of “old” zombies is tied to way more than just the game.
They could release a game that was an exactly the same as world at war and it still wouldn’t “feel” the same.
Too much is different. The state of gaming, the state of the world, the state of how people experience things, but most importantly YOU are different. If you played OG zombies when it launched that was 17 years ago.
For me I was a kid playing my 2nd ever call of duty game. I was still in school. I was staying up late to play the new zombies mode that I just found out about. I had friends coming over to split screen, and hang out while we played in the brief free time we had after school but before dinner.
It’s all the stuff like that, that really gives the feel of “old” zombies. It was a different part of peoples lives and no game or anything that comes out today will be able to make you feel like that.
This isn’t just true for zombies of course. This can be applied to almost anything.
Player just has way too much at their disposal these days
Back in the day, if you made a bad decision and got trapped, you’d be punished with a down. Now? You can use a specialist, gobblegum, scorestreak, etc etc
On top of that, because the player is so strong now, the difficulty scales to a point of absurdity with miniboss spam and super sprinters. Used to be that you knew where you went wrong if you take a down, now I feel downs often feel unfair
We’re just not the target audience anymore, way she goes I suppose
