$800 million, 13 years, and still no release date — the state of Star Citizen in 2025

  1. Star citizen is a live service game that will never release

  2. LordZivilynBane

I bought one package a decade ago that included a small starter ship. That was it. Was really excited about the game and wanted to start small and move up to bigger ships earned in the game.

I haven’t done anything else with it. Just gave them my money. Feels dumb.

  3. Spideyknight2k

Just shows that you can sucker people into just about anything. Be careful out there guys and gals. Everyone is trying to make your money theirs.

  4. How long until it’s officially classified as a scam?

  5. I keep hearing about this game in the gaming community.

Is it playable but being updated in a constant state of pre-release/beta or people who supported it haven’t even played it yet?

  6. SemenSphinx

Meanwhile in that time frame Path of Exile was developed, released, was a fully supported game with many seasons, and had a sequel developed that launched EA.

  7. asleeplongtime

Not sure what’s more annoying, this game or the people who constantly report on it

  8. EMB_pilot

Gotta love the shill YTbers that hype it up: “StAr CiTiZeN jUsT gOt A mAsSiVe UpDaTe AnD iTs HuGe”

  9. At least they’re constantly working on it, and adding things. It’s not like the development is dead.

I don’t care if it ever releases honestly. It’s the only game that has held my interest exclusively for this long (2 years). I’ve spent more on AAA games in the same amount of time, that I have a fraction of play time in. With SC, I got my $45 dollars worth many times over now.

Also keep in mind that SC was built off of FOMO dollars, and much of CIGs effort is still spent trying to figure out the next money grab. Don’t fall for it.

I pirate other players for money, and it’s fun as hell. Disabling, boarding, and killing the crew, then stealing their cargo and selling is as fun a game gets for me. Nothing else comes close.

Here’s a compilation of some hits from the latest patch. The game is very playable, and very fun.

space dot com is really stretching for clicks huh?

  12. Responsible_Law3761

Wouldn’t that make it pretty much a “live service” game at this point?

  13. onedickpunch

I have the most fun when im rp a broke delivery boy in my titan

In the span of 13 years… I bought a house and had a kid.

We’ve had PS3, PS4 and PS5 now (and we’re hearing vague mentions of PS6). Nintendo released Wii U 13 years ago.

Game of Thrones became a cultural juggernaut, before becoming a meme.

Trump was elected, Biden was elected, Trump was re-elected.

Darks Souls 2, 3, Sekiro, Elden Ring and Night Reign were released.

13 years ago was the end of the MCU’s first phase.

A baby born 13 years ago is in high school now. Someone who entered high school then could have finished high school and university by now.

And it’s still in “early access” with no end in sight. Lol.

It can be a great game. Some bugs come and go, some servers are phenomenal, this year they’re actively working on performance and for the most part it’s been pretty good.

The game itself is really what you make of it. There’s gameplay loops, but more importantly it’s about creating your fun yourself.

Being able to choose what to do based on what you’re into, be it pretending to be a space trucker, a miner, a medical provider, a bounty hunter, a dog fighter, a pirate… even down to things more unique like being a serial killer if you really wanted to be…

That’s the thing with this game I think a lot of people who don’t like it don’t realize; you can really make it how you want it to be…

And of course, with friends is always better. You just have to be a little creative to make it as fun as you want it to be.

***This all goes with saying that ya, it can be pretty unstable*** sometimes… but for the most part I greatly enjoy it and it’s depth/fidelity.

That, and most importantly, you really don’t need to spend any more than you need / want to. You don’t need to drop $100 on this game, or thousands. A lot of people feel it’s a scam, and I think that that’s applicable to the individual.

For some people it’s been worth the money, for some it hasn’t, and I think that really comes down to the person spending the cash.

Temper your expectations and wallet and then decide for yourself. I’ve gotten well over my money’s worth.

  16. Meh, the whales are free to waste their money. I’ll check in every few years with my $30 kickstarter ship.

  17. Peregrine_Falcon

I think we can all agree that GTA 6 will release before Star Citizen does.

  18. thomas2400

What does it matter if the people who are playing and spending money are happy? Also what do people actually expect from a full ‘release’ it’s still going to be the same as is it now

  19. Shimmitar

another yearly copy paste BS article thats hating on SC and acting like they know what they are talking about.

  20. They turned a passion project into a career. I think some folks are banking on retiring on this project alone.

  21. GamerInvestor101

The developers are just bilking the cash train for job stability and wages.

    No accountability

  22. Snugglebadger

We need both subs to agree to a bet, whichever game gets released first between Star Citizen and Ashes of Creation, the other sub has to change their banners to a bunch of copium clowns.

  23. Narradisall

I was listening online to people discussing the game and saying looking through their financials they’re getting to the point that the 800m has been spent. Hence they were speculating the recent blades situation was testing alternative funding routes.

No idea how much it holds up but wondering if the end is beginning for how much they can keep going. Whales can only fund so far with overpriced ships for so long.

  24. ChangingMonkfish

The starkest of example of why just leaving developers to “release the game when it’s ready” doesn’t work – they need the pressure of a publisher giving them deadlines to actually finish the damn thing.

  25. claykiller2010

Meanwhile Hello Games is just pumping out the free updates for No Man’s Sky……no $800 Million needed.

  26. InertState

    RemindMe! 10 years

Did they ever release the game?

  27. Xyrus2000

The gaming version of “The Bridge To Nowhere”.

  28. GarryDreamer

You gotta see it from another perspective….i hope they never finish it….this way more and more crazy things will be in future multiplayer games.

The single player campaign on the other hand….

  29. How many active players does this game have? I’m aware of the memes but just wonder how many people are funding this Neverending development, I remember when they were working on realistic bedsheet physics or some shit lmao

  30. I don’t get how this “game” isn’t talked more about, I’ve heard for 13 years that once completed this game will be the paragon of video games, you will not need to play anything else, yet, in that time spawn we have gotten master pieces, other games that have come broken and where bashed to oblivion like Cyberpunk or no man’s sky (funnily enough a game set in space) other games that had to disappear because they were scams like the day before, yet, there’s people that still pays and funds this thing that has become a glorified space garage and nobody talks about it

  31. How, with $800m, can you not manage to push a product out the door? Knowing almost nothing about it, I can only conclude people are just spending the money on cars, homes, boats, trips, etc?

  32. chancy_fungus

People like to hate on Escape from Tarkov but LOOK AT THAT *points* IT COULD BE WORSE

  33. I was 99% sure they put a tentative release date on squadron 42 in am I wrong

  34. fuckincommunists

It’s like cancer research. It became so big, it’s a business all in and of itself. No wants wants to finish it now so the dollars keep rolling in.

  35. fusionsofwonder

13 years of me feeling smug for not backing his Kickstarter.

  36. Neither_Cabinet_2565

The sad part is that the fans do not realize that the best way to actually get a working game would be to stop giving them money and actually give them an incentive to make the game

Realistically if the game came out and it was even half the things they promised it would be MASSIVE but so far they have 0 incentive to actually release it

  37. kayl_breinhar

The fact that they can’t even get *Squadron 42* released speaks volumes.

  38. Ginn_and_Juice

The people that keep subsidizing this game deserve to have nothing and a really huge spit on their faces from the devs.

    What a fucking joke
