Starflight was a game full of exploration, puzzle-solving, crew management, and action. It was the game that got me to buy a Genesis. Beyond being a nerdy space junkie it was the first game to really grip me thanks to the thick manual with a deep background story. I even made Honor Roll just to justify my parents buying it.

Starflight is an exceptional game and probably my favorite on the Genesis, but I think what it offered then vs now is the difference in accessibility of unique games being developed. We can have quality, cheaper games that also stand out from the others and it makes it hard to digest a price tag for what we are given by AAA studios.

I’m just waiting for people look back on MK:World as a deal when it’s $80 then gets a whole two years of free updates because Nintendo has been on that kick with loads of it’s games in the Switch Era.

Then all the other AAA games will *start* at $80 and then charge for season passes, DLC, cosmetics, loot boxes….

I look at how Mario Odyssey had enough cosmetics that any other corporation would have charged $5 each for. Mario Odyssey has like 40 outfits you can mix and match. That’s stuff that other Companies see as Nintendo leaving $200 on the table.

Hell the only outfits in Odyssey you had to “pay” for were on Amiibo, and you’re getting a neat REAL figurine with it.

The “deluxe” editions are already £80 in the UK & most of those come with bits that enhance the game or really cool skins that you kinda want. The brand new games are on sale after 3 months, I’ve been stung so many times by looking forward to a game, it being broken at launch and then goes on sale when it’s fixed. all it’s going to do is make people take a long look at their backlog and finally get round to playing some of those other games & waiting for a sale. Unisoft have already said it’s not cool that we think we own a game & I reckon soon games will only be available on their subscription service (but hey, you get the full catalogue) and then they reserve the right to stop service at any moment without prior notice. It’s *this* close to happening and it doesn’t matter how many people say “vote with your wallet” they still buy the latest games and pre-order the unique skin bundle, and get the in-game currency to buy things that used to be free and unlockable

  4. Not to be confused with starfield which was complete garbage and also a whopping 70 euros.

He’s honestly done enough that I have zero intention of ever playing it. The last one was kinda garbage anyway.

Bingo League 4? Beach Life 4? Bench Licker 4?

For the love of god, stop using acronyms without mentioning the game title first. I hate it when people do this.

  7. Used to have this game growing up as well. It was definitely of a scope I didn’t see much on the Genesis. I really enjoyed the artwork of the races that was in the manual. Never did manage to reach the Uhlek brain world to leave a black egg upon…

I hate, that he used this game as an example. Honestly I have no idea how much it was. I think my brother came home with it one day and maybe got it from a trade with a friend or something? I dunno.

But my GOD this game was something else for me. I was a big fan of Star Trek TNG and being able to fly around space? Upgrade my ship and meet new life? . . . Well, ‘new’ life. Re-meet them? Anyway-

This game was wild, never saw anything like it for ages, AGES. Being able to fly to a planet and then land on it? That only happened ages later with No Man’s Sky.

My brother n’ me didn’t have the manual or the map, just the cart. So we were talking to aliens, writing down the coordinates we were told. We had no idea what we were really doing and wound up just grinding the ship and TV to the max and flying around to explore.

Got to really play it more recently and it’s a great game. A game EA would never publish again.

    Randy is a tool.

  9. Played Starflight on a Tandy 1000. I remember the decoder wheel. The big actual floppies. the swapping in and out of the floppies and the slow ass read and write times of those old drives, but once you were going it was a cool game of exploration, resource collecting, team building, ship building, diplomacy, managing factions, and saving the galaxy.
You Sega guys had it made 🙂

£80 my ass, theres no way :/

I got Starflight and Kings Bounty in exchange for Cool Spot and Lemmings (and to borrow him Micro Machines for a week) – Second best trade I ever made when I was about 11.

Best was FFVII for a crisp tenner

Did they say there would be no dlc, MTC or season pass? I fully expect atleast one of those in any game these days.

the cost to make a cartridge was the reason why most games were expensive back. Especially if they allowed for game saves or included processors that boosted visuals. Games started to get cheaper when discs were introduced because it only cost a few cents to manufacture a disc.

  13. He honestly believe that I can’t wait till Steam bargain sales to get it? I don’t need this at release, why would I, history has clearly shown that getting games at release date is a bad idea, because they often have many bugs or missing content from the start. Rather wait half a year, a year, before thinking about getting it.

It’s not icecream on the table, it doesn’t melt if I don’t eat it right away.

Starflight on an old Mac was the first game I really became immersed in. It was brilliant.

Dude, we had multiple $79.99 cartridges at my Electronics Boutique in 1996. We need to stop clutching pearls over money.

The games all drop to $20 in a few months, anyhow, and half the most played games are free.

After my friend gifted me BL3 for the 4th time over a couple of years I accepted, they didn’t deserve my money after what they pulled with that and they’ve not gotten better.

It’s become an inventory simulator with some bad jokes in between, I can put on Comedy I like and just clean my room for free!
