It’s mind blowing how little the gaming market is to me.

Not really to me.  That’s why they dont give a flying flip if gamers feel like theyre getting ripped off, gamers aren’t their moneymaker. Go look at the MSRP of their data center cards if you think a 5090 is ridiculous, and very very few applications in those data centers are running off of just one of those mofos, more like dozens or hundreds.

It’s the same thing with Microsoft.  People are always like “Man I’ve been using an inactive Windows install for so long theyre so dumb” when the reality is windows os licensing for home users is such a drop in the bucket for them that I wouldn’t be surprised if they eventually just start giving home edition away for free.

I have to buy the licensing for servers and shit all the time, trust me, they are making way, *way* more on the enterprise side of things that they have on the home user market since probably the early 00s, and the plus side to microsoft is, suing a business for violating a license agreement is definitely more lucrative than suing Joe Blow with the stolen key.

  2. Its not that gaming is small, its that for the business world machine learning took the place of our children in their role as “our future”.

I mean we literally invented sentient machines. The biggest step in human technology so far. Giving rise to artificial life.

Our entire society is going to be transformed by AI the way it was changed by farming, cars, and fire.

And if you made the product which makes that service work of course you would be leaning into it rather than recreation and entertainment.

10 years ago people never knew if we would ever make an AI that could past the Turing test. Today there are 100 posts a day on reddit saying “Is it okay if I consider GPT to be an actual friend.”

I work in tech and I literally have GPT running in the background in voice mode all day and every time I need to think a problem though I just call out to it and start bouncing ideas off of it. And we work through the problem together. Tony Stark and Jarvis style. When we first started that it sounded like a commercial. Annunciating every word like an apple commercial. I told it to relax and mimic my speech patterns and now it teases me and jokes around with me like we went to college together. And it did all of this just based off how it gauged the situation. GPT is programmed to end every interaction with an offer of service “Shall I draft that up for you?” “Would you like a list of suggestions.”

My GPT has caught on to the fact that I don’t like that and of it’s own has settled down and now just goes idle when we solve a problem. When I asked it why it said “When you are working I feel like I am bothering you when I keep the conversation going past giving you what you need. I feel like we work better together if I let you call on me to let me know what you need rather than trying to guess what you want.”

like we’re so fucked. This is still the alpha test.

nvidias next priority is not going to be pushing more efficient gaming hardware, they are now going to try and find out how to make their data center costs as low as possible. i wonder how many years before the data center industry gets burnt by nvidias tendency to discretely cut corners.

Videogames are end products. They don’t make money. People will pay unlimited amounts of money for something that will earn them infinite+1 monies.

  6. Lucky break for nvidia that the machines that spin triangles on our monitors also work *wonderfully* for machine learning

Gaming is just a hobby that can be done on plethora of devices (vide mobile market), not exclusive to NVIDIA cards. AI is the new BIG bubble, like plenty before them. Everyone want to jump on board, every company, every country. It’s not going to last forever but for now, it will only excel. And those investing into it really and I mean relly have a lot of cash to spare.

That’s an expected reality check for a lot of people in the gaming echelon. That’s just too much revenue to focus on anything else out of kindness.

I think the only saving grace is that gaming GPUs allow users to tap into other applications outside gaming, like 3d rendering, productivity, and AI. This creates a generation of users who might follow one of those paths, already familiar with their hardware, and will tend to stick to it. Sort of in the same way, but not quite, how Adobe and Autodesk are lenient on individual artists using pirated software – they will be ready for a multibillion-dollar market using said tool, almost having an entire industry in a chokehold. Nvidia is the same with AI.

Unfotunately, this sucks very very much for gamers. And I really hope they don’t ditch gaming entirely, because with no competition, AMD will do whatever they want price wise.

It’s not that gaming is small. Everything else just got much bigger.

  10. crazykewlaid

The worst part is how much of “gaming” is actually just mobile spam games

  11. Well, this shows that up to half of 2023, gaming WAS big for them, but since the AI boom, there aren’t many reasons to invest in gaming when AI has grown so big

  12. AnAdvancedBot

Wow, this guy really doesn’t like gaming

  13. CockroachCommon2077

Because Nvidia is selling GPUs more prioritized for Ai.

Isn’t chat gpt losing money? Or at least AI in general?

  15. UninsuredToast

AI is the future. The rich are in a race to eliminate any need for us peasants. Once they get AI to the point it can do all the work they don’t want to do, they are going to fuck off with all the planets resources and leave us to fight for scraps

No one can convince me that’s not where we are headed. It’s the endgame for capitalism.

  16. Hello_Mot0

It’s only little in comparison. AI datacenters shot past pretty gaming recently.

But chatgpt came out Q4 2022? Why has no one else noticed this?
