Rockstar hired a PR firm to stir outrage when launching GTA in the ’90s, targeting right wing newspapers to ensure moral backlash. The negative press made the game controversial and therefore popular, driving it to early success.

The only difference between then and now is now you don’t need to pay to ensure the political outlets stir up moral backlash.

Just wait 5 seconds for somebody on Twitter/Reddit to rage post about it.

Well, that’s one way to get attention and attention they did get, even well after in the early 2000s.

    Two Words: Jack Thompson.

So the hot coffee thing was likely intentional.

I don’t remember reading about this in Jacked.

I wish this in itself become news, to patronize said newspapers.

  6. Copola used to do this with all his movies too. Built up an audience of people who went to see them to prove that they could truly understand the vision unlike all the sheep. Ironic.

It’s why I was worried that Megalopolis wouldn’t actually be bad and that I was being taken for a ride by all the panning reviews. I’m very glad to say that that movie is unadulterated ass though. It’s phenomenal shit. I love it.

I remember when GTA 1 came out and the box had “must be 17 or older to buy” printed on it. My friend convinced his dad to go buy it for him as we were a little shy of 17. Remember the nightly news having a story about this new super violent game.

These days they have to target the opposite side

  9. Musetrigger

It IS pretty easy to play the far right like a fiddle.

So they invented cancel culture just to sell video games? Legendary

Literally my introduction to the franchise was a pearl clutching Fox News segment about GTA 3 back when it came out.

That is what I am worried about GTA 6. GTA was a controversial game since you did crime, drugs and stuff not allowed by your parents in a game, hence why so many of us played and enjoyed it so much. It was new and refreshing.

Now it is hard for me to see the charm of GTA 6. Rockstar will not take the risk to make it controversial. They will play it safe a just make a GTA 5 but with better graphics

Honestly I don’t remember anyone caring about GTA, GTA: London, or GTA 2.

It wasn’t until 3 and they made the jump to 3d did anyone pay attention.

  14. Kitakitakita

ironic that its right wingers that obsess over the game now

  15. Iggy_Slayer

30 years later and it’s still right wingers being outraged all of the time. That has to be exhausting.

Conservatives have always been the real snowflakes.

  17. We would trade the top-down GTA games like they were contraband in grade school. At some point someone got it in their head that the games were banned, despite them being on sale in every computer store in town. We were rebels.

If you’re wondering whether or not they still contract PR firms for this kinda stuff, then I want you to remember a few weeks ago when NOBODY would stfu about gta6.

  19. Abo_minate

Where does it say anything about Right wing newspapers?

  20. Reminds of when Kevin Smith showed up to protest his own movie Dogma along with all the other nutjob protestors

So they actually astroturfed, but because it fits the reddit political agenda, that’s okay.
