Probably because people insist on pre ordering games.

Just watch Cartman opinion on pre-ordering it’s basically sumerized it all

Why would you pre order a digital product… It doesnt go out of stock…
Desperate-Intern
I have never preordered games, even in old days. Just never got the FOMO or something. These days, I don’t even go for day 1 purchases as I know the games gonna be buggy more likely than not.

None of the current comments actually base the issue on the organizations who employ the devs to create the games.
Companies are focusing too much on profits with DLC and content that just stuck behind paywalls when the games could be released with the content.
Not much we can do though, big games require big dev teams, big dev teams require a lot of money, a lot of money spent means more advertising, more advertising means more money, more advertising also means deadlines need to be met or else the hype dies.
Bydlak_Bootsy
Back in the day, you could at least get the game week or 2 before the release, sometimes with reviews in magazines already being ready so you knew what you were buying.
Now, pre-ordering is only worth it if you can get a really, really good deal on the game.

Cannot tell you the last time I preordered a game. Between games missing the mark, having game pass, sailing the high seas and having a backlog, I don’t preorder anymore, and haven’t for years.
Askolei
Why is pre-ordering games?
FairReason
Because releasing games unfinished is the norm now and the consumers have accepted it. If I can sell you a pile of shit for the same price as a steak and you will pre order it, guess what, you’re going to get a big plate full of shit.

Just an FYI for as long as games pre-orders have existed this meme has been Accurate.
That is to say pre-orders have never been something that is going to live up to expectations. How could it. You are buying the Idea of a product that you have fantasized about, but then get the reality of some business trying to make profits.
ElPomidor
I don’t get it. Pre-ordering now is better due to stuff like the Steam return policy. You can pre-order a game and return it if it doesn’t meet your expectations.
And if this is supposed to be a meme about today’s game quality, then I don’t get it either, there’s plenty of great games nowadays

You pre ordered back in the day to make sure you were able to get a copy, and the only titles that were selling out to warrant a pre order were franchises with proven track records that delivered banger after banger

I mean why would you even Pre-order? Honestly what do you gain from pre-ordering?

I remember back then when pre order feel like getting best value for your experience, and collection like keychains, artwork, posters, soundtrack, figures, and etc, also the price difference wasn’t so bad.
Now pre order get broken/buggy game on release, need day one patches for optimizations, and bug fixes, comes with meh DLCs pre order bonus, you be lucky to even get anything with it like a poster, or soundtrack, unless you paid extra just for that, and get fancy steelcase, or paying extra to get season pass have to wait months, to a year.

What is even the point of pre-ordering?
It’s not like there’s a limited supply at launch.

Pre ordering was always stupid and spoiling the market.
Back then: Cool Steelbook, small artbook, map, other gimmicks.
Now: Pay to betatest the game for the full release 3 days early
Iamthe0c3an2
Preordering was never a good thing.
Especially since games have been available digitally without discs.
“Pre-order doesn’t mean shit, okay? When you pre-order a game, you’re just committing to paying for something that some assholes in California haven’t even finished working on yet.”
