I don’t think I’ve ever interacted with a person who argued Witcher IV should be about Geralt.

Yet again words of wisdom from out white wolf. Well said, wolf.
Least-Path-2890
MFs want the same protagonist for every game. If the protagonist doesn’t change, they complain that the story has gotten stale. If the protagonist goes through further character development after their initial character arc is completed, they complain that the character is ruined. If the protagonist is replaced, they start complaining about wanting the previous protagonist back. There is just no pleasing some people.
SirFluffymuffin
I feel like this is a perfect “if they could read they’d be so upset” moment
ConfidentMongoose
Personally I would have preferred a “blank slate” like V in cyberpunk, that I could customize as male, female or whatever.
I don’t mind Ciri as the main character of the next game, as long as their explanation for her being a Witcher makes sense.
Big_Square_2175
People still complaining about this?! And here I am more concerned if my PC will able to run this lol
Acrobatic-List-6503
The only complaints was about Ciri look off at the announcement trailer and something about breaking the lore with Ciri needing Witcher’s potions.
Other than that Ciri seems to be fine.
Remarkable-Pin-8352
Or just play Witcher 3 where the only way it’d be more obvious that Ciri is Geralt’s successor would be if there were a giant neon sign saying that in all scenes.
Etheon44
Being completely honest, it is precisely by reading the books that I dont like Ciri as protagonist, because of her history and her wanting to be just a normal person.
But I wouldnt have liked Geralt either.
So a new character would have been better, imo.
Blaize_Ar
Well if you read the books you’d know Geralt and Yen would never let ciri become a Witcher ever, the trials are too lethal and they see her as a daughter figure, also they want her to have a life beyond monster slaying.
You’d also know that this would be the first Witcher game with no source material for the devs to work off of.
Eevlor
Where was this dude where they made the abhorrent TV show and fired Cavill for wanting to stick to the source material?
Positive_Conflict_26
Is this one of these fake arguments people have with themselves and accidentally mistake it with arguing with other people?
DueCoach4764
to be fair the witcher withour geralt didnt turn out too well for netflix
sielingfan
*nobody in the comments read the books either*

Most of the discourse I read was about Ciri becoming a witcher through the trial of the grass was in complete contradiction with Geralts actions of pulling her away from such barbaric traditions.
Also given her lineage and latent power it doesn’t make much sense to forgo that in favor of mutations which seems to be the case in the trailer.
Honestly i was hoping for an original character, with Ciri being the mentor figure and Geralt being vesemired. I’m not excited for this one, but who knows maybe it won’t be as bad as it looks.
flaming_sausage
What strikes me odd is that sometimes its “read the damn books” and other times its “it is just fiction, who cares”.

Hear me out: for some fans of the Witcher video games, Geralt is the character they enjoy playing as. I would imagine some of them haven’t read the novels and likely never will. Particularly younger people, who have to have the instructions on shampoo bottles read to them for lack of attention span.
Loads of video games stick with one protagonist for the whole series. Mario, Link, Master Chief, Samus, Lara Croft, etc. etc. The (somewhat) legitimate complaint, I think, is that the change in a character’s identity is almost always male to female, white to anything else, and never the other way around. I challenge anyone to name a game where a white dude permanently replaced an existing non-white dude character as the main protagonist. And to be clear, I’m not talking about Echoes of Wisdom or Super Princess Peach or that sort of demographically targeted side game. I mean a game where the protagonist is essentially named in the title of the game. For example, if Nintendo released a Metroid game and made a very big deal about the fact they were replacing Samus with a dude, I think there would be pushback. And that would be fair to grumble about.
So, listen…I’m not an incel. I don’t hate women or diverse representation in video games. And if the story mandates a change in the main character, so be it. But I don’t believe there is absolutely no cause to be bummed that Geralt isn’t the main character of The Witcher any more. Maybe that’s a complaint that should be directed at the author of the source material, but I still think it is a valid complaint that shouldn’t be dismissed as misogynistic.
Tom-Pendragon
Ehh, already had my take. The main problem of Ciri being the main character was the same if Geralt was it. I assumed that both their story was finished, and that we would have a new protagonist.
FearAndSurprise
The books where Ciri is sexually assaulted and groomed by an older lesbian when she’s still a minor?
CerealExprmntz
That’s a stupid response.
ThisMemeWontDie
I don’t think geralt should have been the protagonist but I also don’t think ciri should have been either
wordswillneverhurtme
Ciri was a large chunk of the books, but those parts were also the worst imo to go through. I cared more about Geralt than her. That’s probably the same issue rn.
kakara92
My only problem with Witcher 4 is that my PC won’t be able to run it, especially because I’m so pumped to play as Ciri.
AcguyDance
I can never understand why people are against female protagonists. Must be living in the 50s.
kolosmenus
I think most people aren’t upset about Ciri because she’s a woman, but because a lot of us hoped Witcher 4 would move away from Geralt & Co and create an original story with original cast simply set within the same universe. Ideally there should be 0 characters from the books. At least that’s the main reason why I’m disappointed by this choice.
Though, apart from that, Ciri has also always been one of my least favorite characters in the Witcher saga. Most of the time when I reread the books I just skip her chapters xd
BeYourself__
Actually I think most people created a false expectation of a whole new world, maybe a customized character in a new (past or future) time
Very few ppl actually thought about geralt.
Givemefreetacos
I thought people who opposed Ciri being the main character was that she was too strong, which I get. Would have been better to start with a new character all together. Still excited about the game though
Skelegro7
Ciri is actually the main character of the Witcher series.
MinervaJB
Blood and Wine made obvious that Geralt is mostly retired.
They could have picked any random witcher, or better yet, you pick the random witcher you want to play as. Male or female, whatever floats your boat. Introduce a sort of class system by using the schools. Same basic gameplay and powers, but each school is more suited to a certain “style”.
I’ll be very happy playing as Ciri, and without having read the books I know she being the protagonist has the most sense lore-wise, but choice is always good.

I guess that hating on Ciri for Witcher 4 is Twitter thing. Most people that I saw not liking Ciri as a MC for Witcher 4 are the ones who wanted to create your own character. I am personally in the same boat. Would have been hype to make your own Witcher and chose your own school
Would have been also pretty cool to get a MC from another Witcher school. The Bear school, the Viper school
Skuzbagg
Eh, they still need to make her more fun to play. Her sections in TW3 were my least favorite. They’re definitely gonna redo how she heals, so it’s really about how they make her warping ability work with combat. Which wasn’t that great in TW3.
TMinus10toban
I want Geralt because I like Geralt, not because I hate Ciri.
If another Indiana Jones movie was released in the 90s or something I would have wanted to see Indiana Jones as the protagonist – fucking shocker I guess….
Would people be bummed if Horizon games no longer had the red headed chick and instead put some dude in there in a sequel?
Dalton_Capps
My issue isn’t that it’s Ciri as the protag over Geralt it’s moreso she is so insanely powerful that I have no idea how they can make it into a meaningful RPG with progression without seriously nerfing her somehow. She is basically already a end game RPG character baseline.
