desert combat was some of the most fun gaming times i had growing up, that mod was so popular that it retained a huge player base even after the launch of battlefield 2. wish more studios would be supportive of this kind of stuff today, it was nice to read that space marine 2’s saber interactive is doing just that.

That does take me back.
Didn’t use desert combat that much. But I did have a realism mod, though should say Hardcore mod.
Used it with the Road to Rome expantion, Monte Casino map, bots on max, tickets on max, and try to take that hill. Managed to take 90% of CP’s after 45 mins or so. Then the bots respawned, and I got rolled down the hill again.
Did think that the Secret weapons was the weaker expansion, not that it was bad, it just didn’t fit right, imho.

Dealing out pwnage with a good AC130 crew on El Amin in Desert Combat will always be a top gamer memory for me.

Best game/mod. Always played this with a group of friends. For some reason I was the only one being able to fly the helicopters (on keyboard). Lots of funny moments watching my friends crashing the apache 😀

I remember my buddies and I rushing home from work/class every night so we could spend a few hours shooting the shit in vent/skype. Then on weekends, we’d haul our CRT monitors and Lanboy PCs around for LAN parties where we played more 1942/DC.
It made grinding levels/gear so much faster for our classes.
Oh wait, 1942 didn’t have that crap. We just poured hours into it because it was fun. You could fly a fast plane in a straight line for more than 3 seconds before you were forced to turn around.
If you took the time to learn the Apache/Littlebird, you were a god. Most folks would hop in the pilot seat, set the throttle to 100% and crash before you could count to three.
