why??? most do, and if you dont plan on upgrading, it just artificially narrows down your options

My laptop started with 8gb, and 4 of that 8 is soldered in.

Replaced the 4gb stick with a 16 so at least I have 20gb now.

Weird number, why they decided to solder 4gb in I’ll never understand.

Except now for laptops soldered memory has a tangible performance improvement

Sodimm just cant physically keep up with the speeds needed by laptop CPUs, and you get worse performance

My laptop is a powerful web browser that occasionally runs Lightroom or Photoshop. 8GB of soldered RAM meets my needs and the only reason I’ve been thinking about upgrading the laptop is because I want a graphics and CPU upgrade. I could have spent $300 more when I bought the laptop and gotten pretty much the same thing but with expandable memory, I would still have 8GB of RAM and want an upgrade.

Or ones with soldered on CPUs either!

I wish you gave me that advice 5 years ago when I got a new laptop. I don’t know in the right mind decided to soldered a 4gb ram onto a laptop and can’t be upgraded later, I wish you in hell. I wish I know better about soldered ram beforehand because I researched day and night to find the right one and thinking to upgrade in the future but nowhere in the description of the listing said so.

Fuck off. I love my tightly integrated Snapdragon SOC.

Depends on how much ram it has, soldered ram is fine if you get enough of it (at least 32 gb).

Pretty hard to find smaller laptops with replaceable ram, what you definitely shouldn’t do is buy a laptop with soldered on storage.

You can pry my Lunar Lake laptop out of my cold dead hands. I love that thing, and the on package RAM is part of the reason it’s so efficient.

I’m glad my wife’s laptop was not soldered on, VR began to stutter so I slapped some crucial ballistix 32gb and it’s been fine.

I get this point for laptops with lower amounts but I’m just chilling with 32gb ddr5
