Long story short, going through a breakup and moving places. I haven’t had my PC setup for a couple weeks. You can imagine my surprise when I get everything set up and it doesn’t power on.

Popped open the side panel and, as the picture shows, I’m immediately greeted with a couple severed wires on the psu side of the 24 pin.

Unfortunately it’s an older EVGA unit that doesn’t have any pin out diagrams, no factory replacement cables available, and Cablemod would charge $40 for a new compatible cable. I’m gonna play it safe and just replace the whole unit, as wasteful as it is.

Here’s my question: how did this happen? Does it look like foul play may be involved? I’m open to any possibility at this point.

  1. Those are very clean cuts. Id say the case maybe during movent or someone snipped them.

That looks like they were snipped with cutters to me.

very unlikely that this was an accident…

  4. expend4ble

Sounds like it was a good thing to get out of that relationship.

There is no way that’s an accident. 99% it was cut on purpose, you can even see how it got squished by the cutting tool used.

Those have been cut 100% .. only other possible explanation would be maybe if you had a zip tie on it and you were taking it off and accidently snipped them but it seems unlikely.

20 years ago, I had a customer bring in his PC because it “stopped working”. I open up the side panel and every single cable was cut: SATA/power/usb/etc.

Customer said: my girlfriend got mad at me because I spend too much time playing WOW.

Those look like clean cuts made by a wire cutter.

Is there a piece cut out or do the ends look like they match? Seems like a big gap between the ends.

    *snip snip*

There’s wire missing, so it’s unlikely to be from movement or catching on something. I would suspect intentional damage, but it’d be hard to prove. Pay the $40 and move on. Lesson learned.

Natural wear is frayed. These cuts are clean. So either you had a mouse in your PC, or your ex is a cunt.

  11. DrewSmith214

There’s a literal section of the wire missing to prevent repair, very intentional don’t look back and tear that thing down to individual parts and re assemble to look for other sabotages

  12. FavorsForAButton

    Yeah those have been snipped.

I’m guessing they thought if they just snipped a couple, it would be just hard enough for you to notice. I guess it beats having your brake-lines snipped in the same way LMAO

There’s a whole section of those two wires missing, OP. A crimp or an abrasion cut could make sense. But two separate cuts that far apart from each other with a section removed is a disablement effort. Particularly, that second set is right next to the sleeve and would require a pair of scissors or snips to accomplish.

pretty simple. your ex is a spiteful asshole

  16. dubesto

A rat (your ex) chewed through them (snipped them with cutters)

  17. gurknowitzki

If it somehow was natural, you’d find the two missing sections laying below the wires. She cut it and took the evidence.

  18. dongler666

Bro, that was cut in two places, and a chunk of wire removed.

  19. gljivicad

I will point out the elephant in the room: your ex girlfriend cut the wires.

“point the finger while you are in blindfold”

I’m not Sherlock Holmes, but I’d say your ex cut them wires. That or gremlins are real. You pick which one is more probable.

  24. MarcCDB

Clean cut at an angle… Yeah… Definitely someone did this on purpose.

  25. waffles2go2

Those are clean cuts and not totally even, so I’d guess someone with wire cutters.

Considering a glass of water could have done some serious damage, I’d say you got off easy…

Replace the cable not the PSU….

Check your car break lines too.

  27. chaoticsky

Electrician here, those are absolutely cut.

“Going through a breakup” is your answer. Someone was angry and petty.
