Why does it change looks on some maps? Why are there futuristic weapons in origins if that takes place in ww1? Does the box spit out weapons from all time periods? Is the box being controlled by someone? Why in origins does it require power? All very pointless thoughts I've had about the box for awhile.

Rotates weapons then you get a random one

If we knew, it wouldn’t be a mystery 🤷‍♂️

Probably because Rocket stole some batteries. Right, you didn’t steal some of those, I don’t know why the mystery box works, what a mystery this is.

    It’s a …. Mystery box

In-game: Element 115 / Aetherium has properties that can bridge time and space, and the mystery box is infused with that ability to pull guns across time.

    Mechanically: it just works

Canonically it’s stated by Maxis that the box we see in origins can channel 115 to pull weapons from time and space:

“When 115 is channeled towards the ancient stones, an energy field appears to drag unknown objects into our reality. Is it possible that Element 115 is disrupting the space time continuum itself? How else could an ancient box, created eons ago bring forth weapons from different eras? Perhaps including even our own future! Further study is needed to understand these powerful and unpredictable forces.” – Maxis

As for why it can have different designs…there is nothing. Literally all we can do is speculate. I think it’s safe to assume that the Origins Box might be the original mystery box or at least created by the Keepers. The SoE box seems to just be a corrupted version the box. Same with the MOTD/BOTD (keep in mind Brutus is “in control” hence why it looks different).
