Shotguns are quite hilarious and fun, especially for first run 😀 SMG and Assault rifles kinda too weak. Sniper rifles and pistols if you go for stealth approach. LMG, dont even bother 😀

Get Johnny’s gun and max the left side of the cool tree minus the revolver perk (because Johnny’s gun isn’t a revolver). Then, get cyberware that increases headshot damage (Cockatrice Kiroshis). Then, get either Kereznikov or Sandevistan.

GENERAL-KAY
Shotgun builds are really strong but you should totally give SMGs a try. There are two Iconic SMGs that are super fun and easy to get early on: “Problem Solver” and “Yinglong”.
Problem solver is fast. like extremely fast. it spits bullets like nothing else. The build is very straight forward. works with either Sandy or Berserk. The only piece that is somewhat necessary is Kerenzikov booster head implant. Grab the Reflex tree perks and some from body to improve stamina. After that, don’t aim and just use hipfire.
Yinglong is more complicated. The EMPs are a major element of your gameplan and you want to leverage that. You should be aiming for the specific Technical perk that lets you have two arm implants for both smart targeting and the other cyberware that turns first shot after reloading into a shockwave. Best way to benefit the emps is to equip a combat cyberdeck, and use overclock as a way to increase chance for quickhack spread and electrical damage. Short circuit and cyberware malfunction are your friends in this build.

teserera shotgun + microgenerator cyberware, and shotgun perks (without ones that reduce bullet spread), if you have the dlc you can add the firecracker mod and grenade perks for pyromania
