CD Projekt exec says “the right thing to do” is release a real Nintendo Switch 2 cartridge for Cyberpunk 2077, not a game-key card, in message to other studios: “Do not underestimate the physical edition”

Can someone explain why the gaming industry is trying to kill physical release? You don’t see the book industry or the music industry fighting this hard to kill their physical release?

It’s funny seeing the amount of Nintendo apologists defending this game key nonsense. It’s just another way for corporations to control the way you consume media with next to no benefit. Also substantially reduces the ability to share games with people over long distance. Nintendo isn’t doing this for the consumer they’re doing this for the bottom line.

The irony of CDP saying ‘the right thing to do’ would be laughable if it was so disgusting

I’m hardcore physical. I’ve been playing since 92. I’m assuming people think digital and streaming is the future. I wholeheartedly disagree. I prefer to actually collect and display. I still have Goldeneye and Super Mario Bro/Duck Hunt, etc.
I was disappointed not seeing a physical version of Oblivion Remastered. Games like GTA6 and the Elder Scrolls 6 I want my physical copy…

Say what you will about CD Projekt and “doing the right thing” with Cyberpunk before (and you can say a lot that has been justifiably said a thousand times, yes), but they’re in the right on this one. The death of physical releases will be a massive blow to gamers, and companies like Nintendo taking further shots at physical releases are all hideous. I am not getting a Switch 2 for this reason alone.

The whole idea of a key card for a digital download seems pointless. Why not just click down load on a store front and have no physical card. What purpose does a fake cartridge serve? Real cartridge, fine. Download digital copy, fine. Insert a cartridge to be able to download, congrats you now have the worst of both worlds.

The main problem is…i dont have anything against the game Key card. Its defenetly an upgrade from normal codes that are gone forever once used…
The problem is how fast like every publisher is now selling their Games ONLY on game key cards.
I swear i see more games on Switch 2 with game key cards instead of normal game cards. I could be wrong but its undenieble, that at release there are way too many game key cards Games instead of normal physical.
And thats my only issue.

Can someone enlighten me what the real problem is with this outside of requiring an internet connection for initial installation? Someone in this thread mentioned sharing becomes harder which it doesn’t as you can still give them the key card no?

I will not be buying key cards for AAA games. I just won’t buy the game at all unless it’s on a cartridge.

100% not getting the new Switch. Hell. I may never buy a console again. My gaming pc holds up well for the games I play and having access to Xbox game pass on PC is just a bonus.
Fuck these greedy ass companies always pushing for record sales every year while finding ways to screw over customers and fans.
