I plugged my Ethernet cable in for the first time ever. Feels like I’ve got all the internet in the neighborhood now

People, gamers especially, have no idea how much they are being hobbled by their wifi in many situations.

There are probably people agonizing over their mouse click to screen display latency playing on wifi who have no idea the wifi itself is adding 50-70ms or has horrific spikes when your neighbors turn on the microwave.

    Leave OP alone about screenshots.

He’s come to proclaim his glorious ascension to the ethernet realm.

We must respect and support that.

Just bought a wifi antenna for my pc, it seems faster. No clue why. I download on my pc 300mbs connected, if i use wifi 430+. If i use my steam deck wifi 430+. Im lost.

  4. Andromeda_53

Why do you have steam show downloads in megabits rather than megabytes?

  5. HayabusaKnight

Fighting game mains everywhere collectively screamed and shuddered in terror

  6. tomtomosaurus

Meanwhile my steam deck is limited by the microSD card so the internet doesn’t even matter 😭

  7. kalibxrr

What are the secrets to getting over 100mbps down on steam? I’ve tried everything I can think of.

  8. Kougeru-Sama

And it’s still half the speed most people in the Midwest have had for a decade. And you negate it all by taking photos instead of screenshots

ethernet always = instant upgrade. i don’t care how good the wifi is.

  10. Goldenflame89

Am i the only person who has the exact same internet speed on wifi and ethernet. Obviously packet loss is a lot better on ethernet, but everyone seems to have stupidly higher speeds

  11. Nicademus2003

Meanwhile my shit ISP equipment loses connectivity thru my ethernet connection constantly forcing me to use Wifi XD. As a gamer it irks me go from maybe 12 ms to 30 or more

  12. nother_reddit_weerdo

Wait till OP sees that number 2x or 4x. Oh what a feeling

As a former Spectrum Technician, I promise you being hard wired is not really better if you’re not close to your Router, or if you in the top 100 of a competitive game.

  14. OnlyNords24H

Haha…the first time it’s like sex lol. Blows your mind.

  15. Faszkivan_13

Ethernet is definitely better, but because my pc is a few rooms away from the router, it would be way too complicated to bring a cable to it. I still get around 500 mbs

Also I don’t know if it’s the routers issue or config issue, but it seems like cabled internet is limited to 100 mbs (not MB/s), it definitely isn’t the cable (I’ve tried with even CAT6). But it might be old and that’s it

  16. EmploymentNegative59

Why didn’t you do this in the first place?

  17. DoubtNecessary8961

wow that is fast. in my region, disregard internet speed, it will always maxed at 50mbps.

  18. OzwaldoLebowski

Lol And what bandwidth are you paying for?

  19. Finest_of_stupidity

Congrats! I still get double the internet speed with my phones hotspot than if I’d use cable 😃👍

  20. BreakfastShart

Hmm. Those are my numbers over wireless… 🤔

My studio where my modem and router are is the next room over from where my home theater is in the basement and I ran a Cat6 cable thru the drop ceiling to a switch in my HT rack so that everything – TV, consoles, streaming devices, etc. – was hardlined as well as my PC. The only things on Wi-Fi are phones/tablets/laptops and ground floor devices like the living room TV and various IOT gizmos.

  22. Panos_0210

dude in my country if you have over 100-200mbps then you are something like a god. the most common is 100mbps while you have 800+ from that im seeing

  23. If you are playing any sort of fast paced game on anything other than wired… you are missing out. You up speed is your bottleneck.

  24. AiiRisBanned

My wireless does that, I should run Ethernet..

  25. Original1Thor

I’m on wifi right now, but if I ever played a competitive game seriously, it would be ethernet even if my setup was in a lame location.

I remember vividly that reduced latency and ping giving me so many snipes in CoD on xbox360

  26. P0werFighter

Why tf is there any speed limit for downloading ?!

I always use an Ethernet cable with my desktop. Stable speeds…always.

    Welcome to the club.

PC been wired my whole life. No if ands or buts.

  29. Fardin91

but why doesn’t my internet speed increase when I plug mine in. With WiFi I get 50 up 20 down and same with ethernet. Even though it’s advertised as 200mbps up/down

  30. Always wired for your main/gaming pc unless you really cant do it for some reason.

  31. Accomplished_Tip3597

you know that you can reach the same speeds with a decent wifi setup too?
