Cheers, Geoff. I’m sure this post will change things.

Congrats on including games that are 3, 5, and 8 years old in here???
ChairmanMeow22
Yes, this is the natural way in which stratified markets equilibrate.
Gamers who are willing to pay $60 but not $80 represent increased market share for indie and AA devs because that’s what they’ll start buying instead. AAA gets to tailor their production to gamers who insist on having cutting edge graphics, and everyone else will attract the customers who care less about that.

Stardew Valley – £15

using elden ring is odd, it was released in 2022 on last gen before we had the increase to $70.
bandai namco will most definitely follow the leader and increase prices for newer releases.
but i do agree with the sentiment, there’s a lot of absolute gems for less money.
FrostyMittenJob
I got Need for Speed: Most Wanted in 2005 for $60. If games stayed with inflation a new game today would be roughly $100. I’m not excited that some major AAA games are $80, but I can understand the need to increase the cost of something after 20 years.
thugbobhoodpants
This argument never made sense
Minecraft/Terraria type games are like $10 and have infinite hours of gameplay, I wouldn’t skip over most other games to start another new world in either game
agitated--crow
Vote with your money.
bazvink
You’re going to pay $100 for GTA VI and you know it.
Shas_Erra
Ok, that was always allowed anyway
ChromicTTN
I agree. Only time I’ll pay day 1 pricing will be games like Elden Ring and Exp33
WakeNikis
>Better Games
Yeah, sure can’t wait to play Elden Ring with my 6 year old daughter.
No one else does what Nintendo does.
FlamingGnats
There are more games available to play now than you could ever play even if you played 24/7 from now til the day you died. It’s fine to not buy new games.
Nakajiima
All the Nintendo defenders are flocking in to make you feel bad for making better monetary choices lmao.
Funandgeeky
Is this when someone points out that based on inflation games were actually more expensive in the past?
Shaggy1316
I refuse to pay 60 for a game. 80? Gtfo
ChromicTTN
I agree. Only time I’ll pay day 1 pricing will be games like Elden Ring and Exp33

Mkw looks to be worth $80 for me. Has me more interested in it than mk8d plus the dlc, which was $85.
SnickerdoodleFP
Then don’t?
SonofBeckett
The exciting thing is watching a repeat of the 1983 crash in real time.
Oversaturation, gradual lowering of quality and standards, price increases, and a moving away from consoles to PCs. I’m wondering if the massive price increases are just a last grasp at profits before the whole structure of console gaming crumbles.
redhandsblackfuture
I’m sure this will be devastating for the 187 billion dollar gaming industry
tigers113
one thing you are missing is if games start at $60 and go on sale for 50% off, it is now a great $30 deal. If a game starts at $80, you now get it for $40 at half off.
Sure, not everyone will buy at $80, but it will make sale prices higher as well. And honestly, the best model is variable pricing which we pretty much have. Its ok for really AAA games to be $80. But games like Kirby should 100% not be $80 as it just doesn’t have the same content/dev costs as a AAA game.
Bartellomio
Some of these were good!
DrummingFish
OP is a liar. Almost right after they said they’d be getting GTA 6 on release.
warmturtle5758
Thanks for sharing everyone rly cares about your budget. Hope you can afford more next year
Steef-1995
Okay, so don’t? Like what are you trying to prove?
Myrkana
Nintendo is the leader in family games you can play with your kids of all ages. You never have to worry about a Nintendo brand game being inappropriate for your kids. They’re generally easy to play for most kids and high quality.
People continue to pay full price for Nintendo games because of all rhe above.
Edit: split fiction is quite expensive for it’s playtime. I had great fun but me and my partner beat it in 11.8 hours.
WodanGungnir
Paying in 2025 for body type A or B?
Dude, we are back on the high seas. Some of us never left.
🏴☠️
Waaah im too inpatient to wait to buy a game on sale but too poor to afford the new game price waaaaah. Just buy the game 50% off a few years after it releases
Andrew9112
I haven’t paid 60$ for a game in nearly 10 years. No fuckin way I’ll pay 80$, I’ll stick to my smaller studios and early access games.
Bondegg
I think the real issue is that all games are marked the same if they’re made by a big studio.
GTA6 (hot take incoming) may very well be, and is probably likely to actually be worth $100 if you compare it with what you got for GTA4 or GTA5 at their respective price points
What doesn’t make any sense at all, is that every other big studio then thinks “ah ok, $100 is the base line now” when they ship a game with a tenth of the value of a game like GTA6.
EDIT: Just want to clarify, I’m using GTA6 as an example, of course it might be genuine ass, but let’s assume it’s as mega as it’s meant to be for the sake of this argument.
Coast_watcher
Just wait for sales like most of us do. With my backlog , for example, it’s rare I have to buy a game at launch.
They know everyone buys them on sale. The 20% increase offsets that.
$60 > $30 people will buy
$80 > $50/$40 people will buy and they’re picking up an additional $10-$20 a unit
nohumanape
How can you say that unannounced/unreleased games that you know absolutely nothing about will not be better than these games and have more content than these games?
Dumbledick6
Just wait for a sale. I don’t like most of those games
IBJON
One of these things is not like the others…
dgibbons0
Honestly I’ve mostly realized that the games I actually enjoy these days are usually $30 Max.
I could spend an evening writing these alternatives.
In this world, gaming can even be free if you avoid all the mainstream hype trends. Don’t even need to fall for IAP + Ads garbage.
Far_Cartoonist_165
I just started Elden Ring as I have never played a soulslike game so I didn’t knew what the fuss about that game, it looked easy when I saw it on YouTube ( theRadBrad ) and it was okayish in the videos graphic wise but now when I have downloaded it and playing it man, this game is really a GOTY and I am so much loving this game that I am committed to dive hundreds of hours into this game. Really FromSoftware cooked with this. ♥️
FutureLost
More like I’ll finally play through my backlog and stop buying new releases.
Brzrkrtwrkr
People say this then GTA will be $100 and the same people will buy it. lmao
CorvaNocta
For me it’s Monster Hunter. I haven’t dug into Wilds yet, but I have World and Rise and those are going to eat hundreds of hours from me. And I got them both for incredibly cheap! (Just got a Steam Deck, so going through and buying games)
MajorDevGG
Black Myth Wukong less than $80 and arguably GoTY 2024. A game made with love & passion & actually oozes cultural heritage. Then there’s Microsoft studios tens of billions of usd invested and all we get are games like avowed, overpriced and stale… But at least I can make my character type 1 or 2 & have blue hair. My inner slayyy queen is unlocked thanks to Microsoft!
Claire Obscure is also a great game that showcase how to promote diversity in gaming the right way but making organic and original stories with love for storytelling and actually making games ‘fun.’

Man I’m so tired of these pointless temper tantrums posts over the price increases. “Gamers” are such babies.
