Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Publisher Says The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered Shadow-Drop Actually Benefitted the Game by Drawing Attention to ‘Quality RPGs That Week’
article basicly boils down to: popular dev team says safe and obvious thing and people liked it.

I don’t see how Oblivion affected Clair Obscur or vice versa. They are 2 different types of games both in terms of gameplay, genre, presentation and the fact that one is a remaster of a beloved game from 20 years ago and the other is a double A game from an unknown studio that no one has heard of until the word of mouth post it’s release.

I genuinely hadn’t heard about Expedition 33 until I saw people on reddit making comments about how the Oblivion remaster might affect it.
Then I saw it was on Gamepass as I literally went to load up Oblivion, decided to give 33 a go instead and haven’t looked back.

RPGs have been on the rise in the past few years and it’s great to see

That’s a very positive way to look at it and he’s not wrong.

I agree
The question wasn’t “Do you want to play expedition 33 or not?
It became “Do you want to play Expedition 33 or oblivion”
btec_barry
I mean if people resubscribed to game pass for Oblivion, releasing at the same time was probably a massive advantage for them.
Biggman23
Both games were also $50

It might not have hurt E33, but it sure hurt my wallet

I’ve played Oblivion before like 20 years ago. I would rather play a brand new game.

Oblivion is a fun old meme to revisit, E33 is a fucking *EXPERIENCE*!
devilishycleverchap
I think the biggest thing is that it just brought eyes to game pass. Even people that have a sub dont always know when new games drop
People still go to steam as their first option but game pass has been working a lot in the past year since getting Activision to being f2p games to the platform so it becomes your first stop.

I kind of doubt Oblivion helped, but it clearly didn’t hurt all that much. Expedition 33 has gotten better organic word-of-mouth advertising than almost any game I can remember. Everyone who tried it came back immediately talking about how amazing it is.
I sank 160 hours into Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, but at 20 hours in Expedition 33, it’s already the best game I’ve played since Baldur’s Gate 3.

It helps that, while they’re both fantasy RPGs, that’s basically where the similarities end. They’re very different games aimed at different markets, so they’re not cannibalizing each other the way Battlefield 1 cannibalized Titanfall 2.
IMissArcades
I loaded steam to buy Oblivion and ended up seeing and buying E33 instead. I’m sure I’m not the only one!
ex1187
Oblivion made me put off buying it for a little while but I scooped CO:E33 while it was still a little on sale on steam and wow it is a great game.
ScruffMixHaha
Oblivion remake has sucked my time up for now, but I absolutely plan on playing Expedition 33 afterwards. 2025 is shaping up to be a great year for games.

Both games being on Xbox Game Pass is such a good strat. I don’t care for AAA games anymore, but i bought a month of Game Pass just to play Oblivion. I’m gonna try Expedition now. I wouldn’t have bothered before.

What is the purpose of that info? Why they cpntinue to shovel in our faces details of the game’s promotion efforts?

I still think Microsoft tried to fuck them over for some reason.

Whatever the reasons I’m so glad expedition 33 is getting so much attention, it’s incredible.
anirban_dev
He’s being gracious now that a certain level of success is guaranteed, but Xbox definitely tried, deliberately, to shaft them.

Something, something “a rising tide”.
Ya love ya see it.

Glad to hear 33 is doing well. I was wondering if that would hurt sales. Tbh, I never heard of it until the day it released, and I think that was a lot of folks.
ArcadianWaheela
Yeah I genuinely think both being on gamepass really helped. Both getting universal praise and being RPGs of different styles really encouraged a lot of people to try both. The main sentiment I’m seeing is Oblivion is really good, but it’s still Oblivion so people are willing to put it down after a dozen hours and try out Expedition so they can support a smaller studio. This type of unity has been pretty unheard of in the modern gaming landscape.

It’s Barbenheimer all over again. Two great product with pretty different style releases back to back. It’s a hype week for gaming and raises all boats.
PC_Gayming
I literally saw maybe 30 seconds of the Clair obscur trailer about 3 months ago and said “those graphics look cool, I want to play that.” With ZERO knowledge of what the story might be about.
Little did I know I was about to be sucked in by BOTH the story and the graphics. Couldn’t put the controller down, 40 hours in 3-4 days. 10/10 would recommend.

Actually how it happened for me. I was thinking about Oblivion remaster but then stream flipped over to Expedition 33. Thought it looked good. And damn it is good

i am new to gaming (well, haven’t gamed in a couple decades) and just got a ps5 pro a couple days ago. Trying ff14 and SH first. I like ff14 but it is so.. idk. bubbly? cartoonish? and sooo much going on. feels like it was built for PC and ported to controller, so it’s hard to manage. I was thinking about scrolls then saw this. love the gothic feel and overall vibe. I want something more .. grown up feeling. bummer it’s offline play. it does look cool though

I agree. I hadn’t heard of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 until I heard people talk about it alongside the Oblivion remaster. I haven’t started it yet, but it looks amazing

Knew Oblivion will sale as Hotcakes, so i went and bought Expedition just to support devs.
