Remember when console prices used to go down over time? Good times

  1. I miss the GameCube so much. The Wii was good but for me this was the best.

I still use my GameCube from time to time. Still works like a charm

Remember when you could save up your allowance to buy your own console?

I mean it will eventually, or just buy slightly used like Facebook marketplace or GameStop

You would cherry pick the console that sold poorly and retailers couldn’t move them. I love GameCube but it wasn’t moving at all at that time and retailers were sitting on loads of them. That wasn’t an organic over time price drop. That was a fire sale.

Oddly enough, I actually bought what even then was an old PSOne (the slim version) along with the official LCD screen/speakers that hooked right onto the back for about $40 combined at a Kmart that inexplicably still had a bunch of them even when it was late in the GC’s life. I think I took it home, tried out one game to make sure it worked, then put it all back in the box and in the basement where it has remained to this day.

Back in the day consoles were sold at a loss to make up for it with game sales. If Microsoft is serious about opening up the XBox platform those days are over and the platform needs to pay for itself.

Back when Nintendo understood that their console was less powerful than the competition and priced it accordingly…

The gamecube was also a commercial failure. Nintendo had alot of stock to get rid of at the time. It’s a very loved and cherished console now but people tend to forget how bad it actually did for Nintendo

Kinda crazy how unprotected these were. Shows how big gaming has gotten since then.

Nowadays, that be behind some glass, and you’ll have to pay for it immediately, not walk around with it.

If I knew what I know now back then I would’ve kept all my consoles/handhelds. Wouldnt have sold them. Having to re-buy stuff I had and paying dumb prices for it is ridiculous.

Look at all those gamecubes just sitting out in the open, you’d never see that these days.

Now I have to get a dude to unlock the case my deodorant is in.

Don’t show this to the “inflation” group, they forget that consoles used to have price cuts!

Remember when we didn’t have lunatics in office with no understanding of macroeconomics. Remember when your dollar had more purchasing power. Remember when housing and food weren’t 70% or more of your monthly income. Much more things to get riled up over than pieces of plastic. Buy or don’t buy. These posts are dumb.

We peaked in the late 90s/early 2000s.

I remember when you didn’t have to be rich to play video games

  17. Thanks obama was a meme, where’s thanks trump? Because you know that’s his fault right?

  18. HosserPower

Nintendo was doing anything to sell GameCubes back then and Wal Mart clearly wanted to get that inventory out of the store.

That was a fire sale, my guy.

I remember $80 n64 games. Zelda: Ocarina of Time was $80 in 1998. That’s $154 adjusted for inflation in 2024 dollars. Games are cheaper than ever.

Humanity peaked in the early 2000s

  21. I’ve been shocked the Switch Lite never went down substaionally in price.

There was an Animal Crossing version that was about $180 from Walmart, but I don’t remember any other major deals. Certainly not like the old 2DS, which feels like the closest analogue.

  22. jrose125

Hell yeah. The GameCube was the first console I bought with my own money. I think paid around $150 CAD in 2005ish for a silver GameCube, Legend of Zelda Wind Waker, and WWE Day of Reckoning

  23. jbar3640

Game Cube was the cheapest Nintendo TV console ever taking into account inflation (hint: Switch 2 is not the most expensive).

when was this price released? Wii already in the market, maybe?

  24. AlbiTuri05

    $49?! Where do I find a 90% discount?
