Atmosphere, one of the most important aspects of a zombies map is the feel factor. Not enough zombies map feel unsettling or “cold” and a lot of it has dampered over the generations. Not saying these maps are some atmospheric horror pieces, but an example is comparing Kino in BO1 & BO3 is the perfect example to me, there’s a bit more eerines to the BO1 version that can rather rather cold and abandoned BO3’s feels more clean in comparison and to me *feels* less impactful than the BO1 version.

That zombie in the image was once a human, just brainwashed

Psychological horror. You can make the map as dark as you want or the models as revolting as you can, but all of that immediately falls apart the moment you realize, “Oh wait, I’m in a Call of Duty game, lol.”
My gold standard for horror *in Zombies* is still Die Rise, because of its radios.

V***aurd went going all occult like but to me it felt like they were trying to do it to be cool but it feels edgy and lame especially when it replaces our beloved perk machines.
WW2 was being scary to be scary.
But if there’s one thing that modern zombies does good it’s the creepy dark aether body horror mutation

I think if ww2 zombies had better guns everyone would put it at S tier.
I was genuinely scared on the darkest shore fuck those spider things

I think Verruckt is one of the scariest maps because of the implications of what was happening to the people *before* they were zombies, same with der Riese but only kinda. It’d be cool to see more of that but idk if modern zombies are even traditional zombies anymore

Jump scares, crack open a door and a fucker jumps out at you, pitch black areas where you need to use a torch on your gun but that has limited battery you must refil

The scary ass sounds they used to add to the zombies back then, now they just plainly scream
