It’s beautiful. The turn based combat is fun and nostalgic as an old-school final fantasy fan. MC’s head is about 30% too big for his body
EccentricStache615
What’s weird is I didn’t really vibe with FFV7 remake and their hybrid system. But something about that game really draws me in and keeps it interesting even by turn. Also the music and level design are just incredible. I’m so excited about playing thiss
Fantastic-Morning218
Give it a few months and this sub will be full of “DAE think Clair Obscur is overrated???” posts
akepwilly
Deserved. I’m only 7 hours in, just past the second main boss. But so far, it is as close to flawless as anything I’ve played. Maybe it’s just vibes, maybe somewhere further along I’ll find some stuff I genuinely don’t like. Maybe I’m even giving it more grace than I should because I’m rooting for this small team who seem to be punching way above their weight class. Don’t care. It’s exceptional.
idkwc
Rated even higher in the ps store than Stellar Blade. 4.92. Crazy. Its pretty good so far, no question.
skepticallygullible
I was never into turn based games, but this is getting such a buzz that I might give it a shot. Might wait for a sale though
AshyLarry25
Can’t say I disagree. It’s really rare a game has such a lethal combo of addicting optional content and incredible main story like Expedition 33.
With most games I find I either want to do the side content or I want to do the main story. One is always better than the other. In this game I WANT to keep progressing the story because the story starts off in such a fascinating way, lays out a hook. I really want to see what happens, why it’s world is the way it is. Why certain events transpired.
However I’m also DEEPLY addicted to to the combat and optional exploration. Exploring the optional locations. Going around finding unique accessories hiding in nooks and crannies, fighting unique secret bosses with fantastic rewards. It’s really like dark souls in how it incentives exploration with useful gear, absolutely zero fluff in this game. Every piece of equipment or resource contributes towards your overall progression. Every location holds something of value.
This all coming from a studio of 30 people… this is what I’d expect from studios with a decade of experience honing their craft. I’m truly flabbergasted by the game.
Shoutout to the composers as well. Just decided to drop one of the best and meatiest soundtracks I’ve ever heard as their first project. My god the amount of tracks per location, per cutscene. It’s something only Square Enix or Nintendo would even dare to attempt. Just go take a look at the length of the official soundtrack.
Dagfen
Has anyone noticed that this makes the fourth strong contender for GOTY (KCD2, Split Fiction, Blue Prince, Expedition 33) before we even reach the middle of the year?
Damn, it feels like 2023 all over again. Loving it.
LifeVitamin
Idk I’ll play next week and ill stay optimistic but something about this seems odd af, don’t see many people talking about the game yet and the ones that do only seem to have played it for 4h tops yet everyone is claiming this is one of the best game ever made without having beaten it yet.
Responsible-Disk-384
Halfway through act 2 and it is probably the best JRPG I have ever played. It is the most lovely blend of FFX and Legend of Dragoon I had always wanted.
Altekho
I’m not into the turn-base combat in general, but I’m so tempted to buy the game. At the very least the turn-base can be so engaging with those live parry, dodge, and QTE. And my God, those BGMs, I just watched someone else’s stream and I couldn’t get those musics out of my head. So beautiful.
PhasedVenturer
I just played the prologue last night. Granted I was high, but it felt like the greatest game I’ve ever played and I haven’t even gotten to much of the combat yet lol
EDIT: lol I got some haters for some reason, go touch grass
Fathat420
I’m a 33 year old gamer but never and I mean never played a JRPG because of art style etc.
But I saw Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 on gamepass. Tried it and played for 6 hours straight and it was pure fun!
I have now bought it on Steam because it’s that damn good!

--clapped--
It’s apparently went UP to 9.7 now?
McSchlub
I’m a few hours in and enjoying it. The combat feels good, the world is weird but interesting. Not sure bout the story yet but I’m still too early.
The music is bonkers good. So so good.
The voice acting and dialogue seems really good so far. It feels very…natural.
ArtJimp
I bounced off Balders Gate 3 due to the combat, I’m generally more into action games like sekiro etc, although did love FFX back in the day..
The story and art in this has piqued my interest though, do you think I’d enjoy it?
Memitim
It’s a gorgeous, narrative rich, and beautifully acted story, with mediocre combat and godawful quick-time events. Definitely award-worthy and full of wow moments, so if it carries through with the same quality and sticks the landing, it might be GOTY contender, especially if people happen to like that combat system a lot more than I do.
Scavenge101
Seems like the popularity was a huge surprise to the publisher too. I spent a couple hours trying to find the physical release, every shop was barely afforded any allocation of it.
Oakengrad
It’s a banger. I historically have not played turn based games but DAMN does this game get its hooks in you. An absolutely stellar first outting.
For anyone on the fence that can’t just try it out on gamepass I will say that, it’s not like this is some absolute revelation in gaming: it’s just that everything about it feels top notch and designed with love and care.
It personally gives me that “yeah, this is why I love video games” feeling that can be hard to come by. It doesn’t try to fit some exec’s idea of what “the market wants” it just stands on its own and speaks for itself.
Edit: also, I cannot glaze the music enough, like HO-LY.
NotsoSmokeytheBear
It’s a bit of a shame that Oblivion remastered is likely taking away some sales or attention but I’m happy to see it doing so well critically. I can’t remember the last time I enjoyed an rpg this much. Maybe Jade Empire? It certainly wasn’t Oblivion 20 years ago or today.
PossiblyShibby
It’s awesome
delibertine
I can’t find a definitive source but I’ve heard this studio is made up of quite a few former Ubisoft devs. I hope it’s true and that upper Ubi management is taking note this is what might happen if you let your devs, directors and writing staff flex Vs having to adhere to sterile copy/paste formula based bullshit. It would mean more better games for us
That’s expecting far too much though ofc lol
Iggy_Slayer
At this point it’s like a reverse review bomb. People are just raising it to get whatever message they’re trying to convey across, whether it’s an anti action RPG sentiment or anti overpriced AAA rant.
geologicalnoise
This game fucks. And how.
quitepossiblylying
Yeah, I don’t get it. Granted I’m not the biggest fan of jrpgs but this is boring. Repetitive fighting, repetitive music, bad acting. What am I missing?
sup3rdr01d
No matter how good this game is, it’s overrated. It’s not the best game of all time
YetiGamer671
Deserves it
MyWorldInFlames
I’m really not very far in yet (like maybe 2 hours?) but does it get less… Depressing?
I get the situation they’re in is super rough, but all the characters are constantly just so sad about everything. The game is gorgeous and the combat is great but the tone is such a downer sometimes.
Maybe it’s just because my personal headspace isn’t great, but yeah.
chamomileriver
I’ve been waiting for a deep sale on metaphor refantazio but early impressions are making this sound more worthwhile.
SpaceOdysseus23
For now, I think it’s a clear GOTY frontrunner. I’m into the second act and the story is gripping, but more important is the fact that they made a very fun core gameplay loop (that even presents a challenge at times) while having top notch visuals and a fantastic score to boot. All of that with what, a team of 30 people?
I think it sends a clear message to the industry along with being a fantastic game.
Lopsided-ahhh
Can someone help me, is it kinda like Persona 5 or not?
conkerz22
100% deserved. Its a masterpiece
OverlookSemblant
This game makes Nintendo look soooooo embarrassingly bad.
mking1999
I mean, that’s really the only thing that could have saved them from the Oblivion drop a day before its release. Good on them.
Blacknite45
I’m attempting to play through it now but that beginning kinda made it difficult because it’s seems relatively hopeless. I like the game and the story intrigues me greatly but it feels like the objective is hopeless and this will not end well for anyone, nothings hopefully, everything is subtely indicating everyone is already dead and I’m sad
10/10
Ekillaa22
Damn so this game for real is a sleeper hit let’s fucking go dude! Huge time for RPGS right now it’s insane. So what’s the main pull to this game? I know it’s turn based but with a twist? I’ve seen exploration and side content is super good and rewarding so nice
Slylok
I really like everything about the game except for the combat. Very repetitive. I’m going to try to finish the story but it is going to be difficult. I may just turn it to story mode and blitz it.
TechWormBoom
I adore the game but I’ll be the guy to say: 1) I wish we had a minimap, 2) quest log, 3) restart battles rather than having to purposefully wipe and run back (switching weapons right before a boss and forcing a save is a good strategy).
yotothyo
Yup. It’s quality.
These types of games are the future of the industry and I couldn’t be happier it’s successful. A “AA” game with “AAA” quality made by a team of 30 experienced game dev’s.
fuzzynavel34
Fully deserved it
LordDeathScum
I’m having a blast!, for me this in GOTY contender. The art style, the story. Very good game, will definitely follow this new studios progress. The game is a gem.
ThatSithClone
Soooo, uhm what’s the game about?
TitusProductions17
I’m at the end of Act 2 so things might change later, but as of now this is already one of my all-time favorites
dvenator
Wonder how many actually finished the game.
nightpop
Gosh dang it I want to play this so bad but there’s also Oblivion and there’s only so much tiiiiime 😩 why are we cursed with such great options
Low_Hanging_Fruit71
5 hours in and combat is very repetitive. The story, production, voice acting, and the world are all excellent. Lune will definitely give users scores a bump though. Incels love hot Asian girls.
Antergaton
So far it’s fantastic. Plays great, looks great, sounds so good I’m already looking to buy the soundtrack, voice acting is great (although really curious to know what the French is like). I’m honestly amazed that a new studio can produce something like this. Bravo to them.
Inside-Specialist-55
I am 4 hours in and this game is an absolute masterpiece. I am not into turn based games but decided to try it since it was on games pass and I am 100% hooked. This games presentation and art style is among some of the best Ive ever seen, They nailed it with a fine balance between story, gameplay and exploration. The start of the game nearly had me in tears, there is lots of emotional moments that we need more if in games.
Side rant: why are games like this so rare nowadays? This was a game made by a team of 30 people and they were able to deliver AAA quality and a pure great game with no monetization nonsense. This game reminds me that I didnt just suddenly get tired of games its that most games just dont push the boundaries anymore and do anything to keep a player engaged. How many more fu**ng extraction shooters do we need, how many more live service games. The games industry has grown so stagnant that these gems like Clair Obscur stand out.
Sharp-Dressed-Flan
It’s fucking insane how good it is. The writing is tight.
