My dad got this p.c ten years ago for cryptomining, and now lets us game on it. Is it good?

It depends on your objectives. You can certainly enjoy a lot of indie games with this.

If he mined 10 years ago, you must be swimming in dough, get yourself something good, quadruple 5090s.

Getting very old but powerfull for its time. Not quite obsolete, but can’t play a lot of the newest stuff. Absolutely fine for lighter/slightly older games. Far from worthless.

You like indie games? Minecraft? Source Engine stuff? You gonna have a lot of fun…

the gtx 980 ti is still a pretty good gpu, older games will run great and even some modern games like cyberpunk 2077 will run just fine with some lower settings. the cpu isn’t bad either, especially if you overclock it. just make sure that the parts aren’t degraded after years of mining.

It’s old but alright for games on lower settings. Don’t expect too much for higher settings and some modern games may struggle.

It can serve well at 1080p 60fps for some older titles. Could probably run stuff up to 2020? Depends on the title, but generally should be okay for games up to that year.

Built my first rig with a 5820K and 980ti. That’s a haswell e chip — designed for multi thread/multicore workloads, think editing, rendering, etc. While now an old chip don’t get it twisted, this thing can game just fine. It my struggle with newer titles but overall it’s still a solid gaming machine, and a very capable video editing machine if that’s your thing.

Should still be fine for plenty of games.

I really enjoyed playing games on my gtx 970m in 2014 and I dreamed about using the 980 back then

If you play esport titles or older games on 1080p low to medium settings, this thing will game.

This is still quite a solid rig, assuming it’s got at least 16GB RAM. Don’t let all these people go “oh it’s all ancient garbage”, that should still run like 80% of games on high 1080p 60fps. NOT ULTRA and NOT 2K OR 4K but still decent for 1080

Good for games going 2020 and back. Not great for games after that but will probably play a few on low settings. The gtx980 is a great card but it’s reaching its final years of being relevant to modern gaming. It will really shine with previous older games though.

I was playing R6 and MGSV on my 980ti. Should be capable of playing plenty of games.

Ten years ago, that was top of the line. Now, it could use a GPU upgrade for sure, but it’s definitely not scrap.

Hell, I’m still running my GTX 970 from back then in my server.

Perfectly fine for 1080p 60fps gaming

  17. Odd-Onion-6776

fine for 1080p for the most part

  18. MurtaghInfin8

    Yeah it’s likely still good.

This sub also has an aneurism if you dip below 30fps at 1080p playing modern titles.

Lower the resolution and graphics enough, and you should be able to play most things. Imo, that’s “good”.

  19. Greedy_Ray1862

That was a beast back in its day. It can still play a good amount modern titles with some graphical compromises.

Tell me 10 current games that do not work on that computer at low details and 1080p resolution

surprised he went for a 5820k, they were expensive ASF and you really don’t need much cpu for crypto. if you want to upgrade that i’d grab a cheap i7 5960x off ebay (roughly equivalent to a 9th or 10th gen normal people i7), and maybe a 2080 TI to go with it. for $350 you could have a killer pc..

and by killer i mean it’ll be good enough to run pretty much anything at 1080p ultra, mostly high refresh rate experiences, anything before ~2018 should do okay in 4k, and you’ll probably have 60fps at 1440p for anything before ~2023

  22. LordCorgi

So this was literally my setup until I swapped the 980ti out with a 3080. And I am only just now changing out my CPU. The 5820k is a solid piece of silicon that while obviously slow by todays standards, still holds up for a lot of games if you upgrade the GPU.

  23. jakemoffsky

At 1080p it’ll run pretty much anything assuming you have enough ram. An SSD assuming you may not have one would help with load times.

  24. Current-Contest-403

for 1080p gaming its good for most games.

  25. speaking_moose

It will not do 2 screen 8k but it will work very nicely. What are your expectations? Have you tried it yet? Is your game cpu, drive, or video heavy? Everyone’s machines were like this at one point and then you upgrade piece at a time.
